It was salty, with no baked ham taste but bland thick sliced deli prepared ham. Totally disappointed. Lots of changes and it's now a tourist destination no longer a true country store. A huge array of already assembled dishes and all the ingredients to make your own. When I asked a butcher at Hannaford if he ever stocked guanciale his answer was "what's that?". But here the response is "Sure, let me show you the selection". The prices are high, that's for sure. And a previous reviewer had a minor heart attack at the party sized lasagna now being 75 bucks. And she's right, I saw it with that price in the fridge, along with similarly priced eggplant parmigiana. Is that too much? I don't know, not having purchased it and tried it out. But I suspect the answer would be "yes, it's pricey but it's worth it". For those who buy premade stuff, that is. Personally I'd simply acquire all the needed ingredients from them and make it myself. The wine tasting on Thursdays is a great way to sample a variety of new-to-you wines along with bites of their cheeses. Fun way to sample and perhaps find a new favorite. And the fresh fish is fantastic. Rather than pics of the store's interior, I'm including pics of the products they sell in action. All dishes certified by Lovey as "Wow, that's delicious". And a bonus - free refills on the beverages!

Here Luca, Christina, and Hakim create artisanal cheeses that embody Carlo Petrini's Slow Food movement: food should be good, clean, and fair. There is an exuberance to their art. They know that their cheese-making improves the cows and environment, that their cheese protects and deepens the "cultura del formaggio", and that their products WILL amaze you by their deliciousness! I highly recommend the cheese-making classes as well. I'd pay just to hear Luca's commentary on life, much less to learn how to make cheese from him! Even after studying food in Italy, I've never come across anyone so passionate about dairy. You'll love the teaching on how cheese is made, the process of making it yourself, the wine, bread, and cheese provided to the students, and the block you get to take home. We make a lot of fresh pasta at home, and they always have the freshest ingredients to take our recipe to the next level. For example, many Italian recipes call for guanciale (Italian cured pork), and we could never find it locally until we visited The Cheese Iron. We had to settle for pancetta until we found this gem of a spot. Their focaccia and baguettes are delicious, and their cheeses are always fresh. They also are the only place we've seen locally that carries Lioni Latticini burrata, which is, without a doubt, the best burrata we've ever tried. We stopped buying commercial burrata altogether after trying that brand. Plus, their customer service is unmatched -- everyone is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Those little (and big!) elements continue to bring us back to The Cheese Iron. I'm so, so happy The Cheese Iron exists in Scarborough.
