First Covid, then the wildfires. With those two working against us, I really didn't think that we were going to be able to go kayaking. With fingers crossed, I contacted Stuart via email noting our arrival date and asked if he had 4 double kayaks available. Luckily he did! However, the day before our arrival the air quality was hazardous and being asthmatic, I had to reschedule to the following week. Stuart was more than accommodating. Fast forward to the following week. Air quality wasn't great, but I was determined to go kayaking! Stuart kept in constant contact with me via email and text regarding the air quality. We made it to Crowley! Stuart texted directions to the beach and met us with a mask on. He said I must have brought my "good juju" because the air quality was terrible for 2 weeks and that was the first clear day they had. Yayyyy! He set us up with jackets, paddles and colorful kayaks. He gave us instructions and answered all of our questions. I was being overly ambitious thinking that we could make it to the pillars that was 3 hrs round trip. Thank you Stuart for suggesting Crooked Creek. It was beautiful! And my arms would not have lasted 3 hrs considering I was only paddling 20% of the time that we were out! We all had a great time and will definitely be returning customers. We HIGHLY recommend Caldera Kayaks!!!

Great guides and beautiful scenery. Learned a lot about the history of the lake, it's wildlife and what makes this area so unique. You meet at 8:30 at Navy Beach, Tufa turnoff from 120. After gearing up, you hit the water about 9 AM and return about noon. You stop along the way at a nice beach for lunch (which you need to bring.) Two pointers: The dirt road between 120 and Navy Beach is one way, bumpy and rough. You will need to go slowly so allow yourself plenty of time. When I was there on June 20, all the restrooms at Navy Beach were closed due to COVID-19. Also, at the lunch spot there are no formal restrooms so you need to go into the bushes!

Stuart and Sue did a terrific job taking my family out on Mono lake today. They were flexible, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and terrific with my kids (4 and 6). Everyone had a great time on the lake and will will absolutely be kayaking with them again.

My friend and I wanted to kayak to the pillars at Crowley Lake. We called around and it turns out the couple of rental places at the lake itself don't allow you to take the kayaks to the pillars. Luckily, we found Caldera Kayaks. Stuart had another tour in the morning at Mono Lake but he was able to meet us at Crowley Lake early afternoon. He is very knowledgeable and told us all about how the pillars and the geology in the surrounding area were formed. The double kayak we rented was very lightweight and we were able to get to the pillars and back even though it got pretty windy in the afternoon. If you want to visit the pillars at Crowley Lake, I highly recommend giving Caldera a call!

We had a great experience from Caldera Kayaks. We were looking for something to do and the kids wanted to try Kayaking. We called Caldera Kayaks hoping someone would answer because we saw on their website that they give guided tours. Lucky for us, Stuart answered and offered to meet us at Crowley Lake right away. Stuart keep in contact via text as we drove down. The directions he provided was spot on and let us know when he arrived. Stuart gave my kids a quick tutorial and tips to help them get going. He was even nice enough to check up on them from time to time providing more advice. He was keen to watch the weather since thunderstorms rolled in during the afternoon. We will definitely be coming back to Caldera Kayaks for a guided tour on our next visit.

This is a small business that gives personal feel which Is becoming more scarce. We texted the business about same day kayak rental and we got quick response back. Stuart worked with our schedule and we had a great time kayaking with the whole family. The lake was very beautiful and peaceful. It was our first time kayaking and we had great experience. We will use this business again in the future when we come to the area again.

We traveled to Mono Lake on Fourth of July to kayak with Stuart and Sue. Our family had the best time! I contacted Caldera Kayaks before our trip and they were very accommodating in making sure they had 2 double kayaks for my family on a very busy holiday weekend at short notice. We also got the privilege of kayaking with people from the Audubon society!!! We had our fill of bird knowledge from the Audubon bird people and some wonderful geology and mono lake specific knowledge from caldera kayaks. We had a quick lesson on how to kayak with "rudder style" kayaks and then we were off! Very quick and efficient so we can spent the most time on the water. My 6 and 8 yr old sons loved all the brine shrimp and bug facts from sue, as well as the rock facts from Stuart and Sarah. We stayed in Mammoth and it took about 25-30 minutes to drive there, part of the drive was on a dirt road, but my Honda odyssey handle it just fine. Stuart's directions were spot on! Be prepared to paddle as the wind kicks up towards the end of the tour when you are heading back. Also be prepared to get wet and salty. My family learned a TON about the Geology and animals in the area as well as history of the valley. We will definitely be back to for more again when we are in Mammoth in the future.

Stuart was a terrific guide on Mono Lake and really made the group feel comfortable and informed. Not only does he do an excellent job coaching the basics of kayaking but he also really knows his geology and history of the area. My wife and I shared a double kayak and had a great day seeing beautiful terrain and osprey up close. Would gladly be repeat customers.

We rented two single kayaks from Bass Lake Water Sports. The good: we got there waaaaaay early and…read morethey accommodated us. Of course we got there way early because the instructions said arrive an hour before your appointment time. Good little soldiers we, arrived at 8:02 for our 9am paddle. By 8;10 they wanted to know if we wanted to get breakfast first or just go. Pffft! Lemme at it. The other good: okay, it's the Sierra Nevada. How can it not be glorious on a lake? Buuuuuut... here comes the bad: waiting, waiting, waiting at the end for someone to notice we came back. I blew my requisite emergency whistle twice in frustration and still nothing. Probably ten minutes of employees not seeing us, or maybe preoccupied with the gasoline powered craft. Which brings me to the next maybe not bad but not great... we were the only people who didn't need to sign the disclosure that we had to pay for our fuel separately. That, in and of itself isn't so bad... but it meant this 3.5 mile lake was choppier than some oceans on which we've kayaked. Constant wake. We had to stay on the shore side of the large orange buoys, and the motorized pontoon boats, sea-doos, jet boats with water skis... they were on the other side. It's like when I was a kid flying 11 hours LAX - LHR in the 1970s and the smoking section's boundary changed based on the ratio of smokers. Yeah, there was segregation but hoo, didn't make a lotta difference. Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy. Still, we're on the lake, it's a beautiful day, what's not to love? The ugly wasn't appalling by any stretch but it wasn't great either, and it's the reason I'd rate this place 3 of 5 stars. It got the job done but I didn't see any evidence that people cared. The kayak was dirty and had trash in/on it - half a paddle padding torn off and river weeds. The paddle was held together with peeling electrical tape, had only one drip ring with no padding (maybe sitting on the prow?) and the paint was chipping off. And the drink holder was half full of slimy river water. Blech. Who wants to risk drinking nasty water running down your bottle? For $250 for two hours, I would expect better.

I would advise exercising serious caution before renting anything from this shop. Our experience…read morehere was severely disappointing, and overall really sketchy. Rental Contract Overall okay, if not a bit disorganized and confusing. It took a fair amount of time to get the contract. They presented us two options for the deposit: a $25 non-refundable flat fee to not have to think about damages, or a $200 refundable deposit. We were told several times, "but if you choose this option, it might take up to 10 days to get it back." No problem - $200 seems a bit high for a kayaking rental deposit, but we were fine with that. They also took photocopies of our IDs and and credit cards without telling us, which was a bit strange. Getting Kayaks Really strange experience. There was a nebulous "wristband" system that half our party got, and half didn't. When we noticed, we went to ask, and then they haphazardly gave us wristbands, which were never used. A while later, eventually we were ushered to an area where we got a safety briefing and then the kayaks by the dock. We were told that when we came back in from the water, we should wait until an employee ushers us back in. Then we were off. Returning Kayaks This is where things got weird. On the water we noticed an extremely fast, dangerous jet ski zooming down the water in a slow area. Later, when we came back to return the kayaks, we followed the instructions and waited for an employee to usher us back in. There were about 4 other kayaks already waiting. There were a couple employees at the dock, chatting, not acknowledging the kayaks that were waiting. Eventually, we had to go in, so we just went for it, and one of the employees ran over. No apology, and the plot twist - it turns out he was the speeding jet skier! We eventually return our gear and equipment (with no employee assistance or directions). We get our gear back from the locker, and are about to leave. One of our party members asks us if we got our deposit back. Confused, we asked an employee. Turns out they wouldn't have given us the deposit back unless we asked. So much for the automatic 10 day period. We asked what would have happened if we forgot, and turns out we would have had to physically come back. We, presumably like many of their clients, are from out of town. So I imagine there are a lot of "mistakes" like this. Overall The sketchiest part of this was definitely was them clearly hoping we'd forget to ask for our deposit back. I don't know if this is because the whole shop seemed to be run by teenagers, but I would definitely not return.

Fly-fishing was something I'd been wanting to do for decades and our weekend of lessons/guiding by David resulted in an amazing positive experience for us. David's passion for fly fishing and for the elements that compose the environment where we fished were greatly appreciated. David is not only extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of fly-fishing, but when he learned we have an appreciation of the local environment there too, he gladly shared lots of his knowledge with us. This included the environment and life cycle of the various species of trout where we fished and their food source, trout fishing up in the high country, the many various types of birds and other wildlife in the environment, some ranching history, etc. His local knowledge of where to fish in the Bishop area was on point. Both days we were at nearby locations that were easy to get to and extremely scenic, but with virtually no other fishermen or other people around. David's enthusiasm for fly-fishing was evident from the beginning. We got us geared up and on the water quickly, and his teaching was mostly hands-on with just a few minutes of coaching before we got our lines in the water, then further coaching from there as we progressed. Before long we were catching beautiful and healthy trout. When we'd hook up David was right there to guide us on how to keep the fish on and safely land and release it. As our skills and comfort on the water increased David would introduce new techniques to us and guide us to other close-by spots to wade into and fish. We caught numerous trout of various species both days. He provided all the fishing-related gear to us and everything worked flawlessly. We had minimal snags and lost flies, and when we did he was on it quickly to get us back fishing. His stoke for fly-fishing and the Sierra is contagious and I plan on getting out there again with him. I highly recommend Sierra Trout Magnet!
