But I really wanted to see Folsom and while on the way to Folsom Lake State Recreation Area with friends, we noticed a sign for the Folsom Prison Museum. Naturally, curiosity won out and we took a much desired detour. Despite having checked online and learning the museum is closed for the foreseeable future (likely budget related), we still decided to drive onto the prison campus anyway to at least see the outside. Mission accomplished! Not only did we find the museum and snap a bunch of fun photos but we also ended up meeting two of the friendliest prison guards imaginable (please note: they're also the only prison guards I've ever met, but still!). They generously took the time to share stories about the prison's history, current conditions, and even fun trivia like the fact that all California license plates are made here at Folsom. Incredible! Oh! I also got a Junior Correctional Officer sticker, how fun!!! Their kindness and willingness to chat really made the stop worthwhile, even without stepping inside the museum. Which, by the way, the museum is the old warden's residence! While I'd love to return if the museum ever reopens, I'll definitely pass on the chance to spend a night here as an official guest. Still, for a quick, quirky, and historic stop, Folsom Prison delivered.

This was my first time ever getting arrested and I was in my bikini, they gave me clothes to wear and were informative about the process. Very professional, Shout out to officer Bernard, officer Oldham, and officer Escobar. Haha I made a joke I'd write a review and I did . ONE THING THOUGH, nothing against the officers but damn that room smelled like straight urine and who knows what else, but hey I wasn't there for a vacation. Really just makes me never want to get arrested again! lol Keep up the great job you guys. Thank you for keeping my spirits up throughout everything and you are great at what you do, you can tell they are amazing officers.

Across Highway 120 from Vern's Groveland Gas is a small hut with a metal roof and the sign "Jail"…read moreon it. I don't know if this was for Halloween or a year-round display (I suspect the latter), but the town has dressed up the interior of this two-room jail from the late 19th century, including bedding, straw, and a couple of dummy prisoners. Used primarily as a drunk tank, the strange attempt to make this hut a tourist attraction was funny and somehow strangely worked for me. I especially like the story of the prisoner who tried to "escape" by setting the inside of the jail on fire -- talk about a Darwin Award nominee. If you are strolling around Groveland I recommend it for a laugh or two.

I mean it's a prison, not the 4 Seasons. It's full of grey walls as you would expect. It's a level 4 maximum security prison but they also have a small minimum camp. They offer several programs for the inmates from academic schooling, vocational schooling, recreation and some are even lucky enough to have paying jobs. It is fairly clean, as this place has become more of a hospital setting so the floors are mopped, stripped and waxed all the time. If the cells are dirty, well that's on its occupants. If your looking for touristy, hit up Old Folsom just next door. They have a museum with displays of confiscated 'shanks' and a huge Farris wheel made out of toothpicks by an inmate. You can also stroll past the guard post a little ways for a better picture of the entrance gate famously seen in American Me and some Johnny Cash photos. Another fun fact some aren't aware of is that Folsom has 3 prisons! Old folsom, new Folsom (California state prison Sacramento ) and a woman's prison just up the road which opened a few years back.

But now years later, I've been trying without any luck to mail a letter hoping to lift an old friends spirits, maybe buy them a snack or two. Not sure what's going on, like perhaps there's an unofficial rule to ex nay any former inmates attempting to write anyone in the Placer Co. Correctional Facilities? Just a thought! Has anyone else had such a hard time getting a letter through? Protocol now is they photocopy all mail and give the inmates copies as a way of curtailing drug flow through the mail system. There are no gang relations. A dark blue pen IS NOT A MARKER! Their latest reason for returning my mail. I'm not giving up; I'm writing the Jail Commander next. Just wondering if anyone else has suffered such nonsense? There is power in numbers. If mail is being copied by Secures Inc., why the pettiness? Corrections should be encouraging ties to the community for incarcerated individuals. Just wanting to voice my sentiments and pray that somehow such nonsense be noticed by the higher-ups. There is one Officer and one Medical staff that were a head and shoulders above all the rest in doing a PROFESSIONAL JOB and they deserve recognition for their exceptional job performance. I got thrown in Sacramento Jail a few years back for false allegations. Ultimately, the charges…read morewere dropped. The Jail Gards are a bunch of Bully Thugs. Very Unprofessional. They were worse than the inmates. As I was getting processed, this young guy smarted off to them, so they used excessive force, and hostile language and brutally twisted his wrists, They ordered me to watch the incident. They had these old obsolete phones, which were probably 50 years old. My right to make a phone call to my cell phone was denied because it was considered to be long distance even though it was a 916 area code. I could call land phones but not to any cell phones. I'll be dammed, If I am being held against my will, I should be allowed to call anyone I need to help me deal with this bullshit. The only numbers I could connect to were to local Bail Bonds, which are also a bunch of crooks. I couldn't call my wife to discuss the bail conditions. Without my knowledge, my wife bailed me out. It was an excessive $150,000 bail which cost me $15,000. I had no way of telling my wife, to hold off and see what happens at the bail hearing because they denied me of being allowed to call my own local phone number because it is a cell phone. As they let me out, a Jail cop was very rude and hostile. I couldn't understand him, so he yelled "Did you get your ass kicked while you were in jail?" Because I was denied from being able to call my local cell phone when I got out, I was stranded in downtown Sacramento. I didn't dare ask the front desk if I could make a phone call. I deserved the arrest, what i didn't deserve was the little 4' Asian bitch telling me that i looked like a man and that is why after 8 hrs sleep i couldn't go home. Woke up in the drunk tank alone..which was odd in itself..lol...had a bad a bloody nose which isn't uncommon..I let them know and theu put me in a cell w no bathroom and when I asked her to use one..she said there was a drain on the floor and to pee in it! I have never been treated so poorly in my life! I don't know who these people think they are. Then when u leave..the only way to get discharged is to sign a paper that days u were not mistreated! Wow!
