Across Highway 120 from Vern's Groveland Gas is a small hut with a metal roof and the sign "Jail" on it. I don't know if this was for Halloween or a year-round display (I suspect the latter), but the town has dressed up the interior of this two-room jail from the late 19th century, including bedding, straw, and a couple of dummy prisoners. Used primarily as a drunk tank, the strange attempt to make this hut a tourist attraction was funny and somehow strangely worked for me. I especially like the story of the prisoner who tried to "escape" by setting the inside of the jail on fire -- talk about a Darwin Award nominee. If you are strolling around Groveland I recommend it for a laugh or two. read more
