This is another review where I'm still sitting in the restaurant while I write this out. Everything has been absolutely amazing. This was our first time here and they were very patient and accommodating to us. They explained all their popular items, went over their favorites, and even gave us samples of their popular stew items. We got the following: A seafood empanada A beef empanada Red stew with lamb and jollof rice Okra stew with chicken and fufu Hibiscus juice Baobab juice Everything came out to around $82, which I feel is very fair since we brought home a good amount of leftovers too. The restaurant is spotless. They have a cute bar area. They play music videos on the TV and it's been a great vibe. They have live music on some nights too. We had a great experience on Saturday evening. Live music was playing and the atmosphere was fantastic. Kombeh was our waiter and was so friendly and attentive. We started with the black eyed pea fritters which were so soft inside and crispy on the outside. The black eyed pea dipping sauce was spicy but flavorful. The peanut butter stew was the star. Super flavorful and comforting. The Chicken was well seasoned and tender. The egusi was new to us. It has a nutty flavor and is sort of the texture of a tofu scramble. It was very spicy. Calabash African Kitchen offers West African Style Food and Drinks. If you are a foodie you most definitely want to try this restaurant because the food really is delicious. Also the chef is James Beard Nominated for "Best Chef SW." Inside is a modern sleek decor. You can sit at the bar or a comfortable table. For my beverage I tried a Kenyan Black Tea. It's a very rich Black Tea unlike any tea I've had before and was interesting. For an appetizer we tried the Fataya Pies (vegetarian empanadas). They had amazing flavors to them and came with a tasty kinda spicy red sauce. They were delicious! The pastry on them was also very thin but also held everything nicely together. They didn't seem heavy at all. We shared the fried Red Snapper and the famous Jollof Rice with Chicken. Both platters had amazing flavors to them. I thought I knew Jollof Rice because I have had it at other African Restaurants but the Jollof Rice Here really is truly amazing with layers of flavors unlike the others I've tried. Both dishes tasted great but the chicken had more going on with it than the fish. The only reason I didn't give FIVE stars is because both the fish and the chicken were both slightly dry and overcooked. I didn't feel the need to complain. This was my first time trying African food and it did not disappoint. I have wanted to try fufu. While I was visiting a friend in Las Vegas l, I suggested this place as a we both love food and trying new places together. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated and staff was friendly. I was torn between two items. The Egusi and the Peanut Butter Stew. The host/ waitress suggested the Peanut Butter Stew so I ordered it with chicken. You can choose your choice of protein (chicken, beef, fish, lamb, or goat for a surcharge) or leave it vegetarian. My friend ordered the Red Stew with lamb. You get a choice of one side to eat with your meal: Fufu, white rice, fonio, or Jollof rice (+$4). We both opted for fufu and I ordered an additional side of white rice. I wanted to try the Jollof Rice, and kind of kicking myself for not. Just means I have to come back on my next trip to Vegas. The fufu was unlike anything I have had before. It's like a malleable dough that tastes like mashed potatoes. You break off a piece and use it to scoop/ eat your soup or stew. The peanut butter stew was delicious, but I did not get a peanut butter taste. The consistency and complex flavors in the stew remind me of a curry, which is probably why I enjoyed it. This was my first experience with Senegambian food and now I can't wait to try more. I was able to taste the peanut butter stew, red stew, and egusi. I loved the red stew with vegetables. The vegetable variety was great, my stew was filled with eggplant, carrots, cassava, cabbage, and potato. The fufu was perfect with the tomatoey goodness. My husband enjoyed the peanut butter stew that was nutty and aromatic. He liked the beef in it too. Everything was seasoned so well. Both dishes were very filling and we left satisfied. In town visiting and excited to find a place with fufu and stews! Our host was super sweet and when we were deciding between two, she brought out samples. They all had distinct flavors and textures, and we actually chose a third one that we loved that we hadn't been considering. We ended up getting the red stew "chu" and casava leaf stew "palasas" with fufu and jollof rice. My favorite was the onion and garlic heavy chu, while my husband preferred the smoked fish profile of the palasas. Because the stews were so flavorful, we felt they paired better with the mild fufu versus competing with the also flavorful jollof rice. Both had a lot of meat (we chose beef and lamb) and we were happy to have leftovers. Also tried their fun cocktails, especially the boabab based one! It's hard to get traditional, authentic African cuisine when you're vegan and I love that they provide not only a regular menu, but a vegetarian/vegan menu for me. Peanut Butter Stew is my favorite and I pair it with rice and Fufu. It's so comforting and flavorful. Everything I remember in a good peanut stew. Love it! I've never had Black Eyed Pea Fritters Akara (vegan) before dining here, but it was so good. It reminds me of a hushpuppy. I plan to dine in next time to get the full experience because the decor is great and the music makes you want to dance. My kind of restaurant! Always love trying the different African cuisine in Vegas and Calabash did not disappoint when it comes to service and flavors. Hawa was the only waitress and she was moving! Always checking on everyone to make sure they are okay. It wasn't too busy when I came in but as time went on it did become a bit more busy and she was still on top of everything. There was a bit of issue with my food, I asked for jollof rice and got fufu for the side (which Hawa took care of) and asked for grilled fish but got fried, which I just ate cause no sense sending that back. Though I prefer grilled or baked fish, the crunch and flavor of the fried fish was still good, especially with the sauces it came with. My wife and I both ordered the **oxtails with fufu**, and I've got to say -- these might be the *best oxtails I've had in a long time*. Tender, flavorful, absolutely perfect. My son went with the **chicken yassa**, which he loved, and we also grabbed the **appetizer sampler**. That sampler came stacked with 2 beef egg rolls, 2 beef empanadas, fried plantains, and black-eyed pea fritters -- each with its own sauce, and every single item was delicious. Calabash was solid. I was really looking forward to visiting this place and made it my first stop while in Las Vegas! This now makes the fifth African food spot I've tried, and while I'm still learning, I've grown most familiar with Nigerian cuisine -- those bold, layered flavors are my favorite. The pros: The atmosphere was warm and welcoming -- clean space, lively staff, and great music. We also really enjoyed our meals overall. I ordered the Cassava Leaf Stew with fish, Peanut Butter Stew with chicken, and vegetarian Egusi. Surprisingly, the Cassava Stew was my favorite -- the bitterness of the greens really stood out in a good way and gave the dish a bold, distinct flavor. The Peanut Butter Stew was my least favorite, though still enjoyable. I think my expectations were different -- I was hoping for a touch of sweetness or a smoky flavor from the chicken, but the profile was more subtle than I anticipated. My husband had the Black Eyed Pea vegan dish with a side of jollof rice. He liked it, but the spice level was a bit much for him. The jollof had great flavor, though the texture was off -- ours seemed a little stale and dry, with some hard rice kernels. My daughter loved the fufu -- no surprise there! Cons: The biggest downside was the wait. Our food took about an hour and a half to arrive, which felt especially long with a child in tow. The bathrooms also could've been cleaner. After our visit, I learned that the chef draws from Senegalese and Gambian traditions -- and this was actually my first time trying either. You can definitely tell the difference compared to Nigerian food, which I've come to really love. That said, it was a great introduction to a different regional flavor profile. I also noticed the Egusi was milder than what I'm used to -- I personally missed that punch of crayfish, bullion, I often look for. The staff here are very friendly and kind. We first tried the empanadas. One seafood and one beef. They were both delicious but my favorite was definitely the seafood. For the main course we split the mixed grill platter. All of it was delicious....I even had left overs for the next day. To wash it all down, I tried their ice tea and it was different from a traditional ice tea you might find at any other restaurant, but very good. This place is so tasty! I have regularly ordered the ginger pineapple juice and the red snapper. The flavors of the fish (which you need to debone yourself since it is a whole fish) with the fresh cucumber/tomato salad and the sautéed seasoned onions is so good! I also highly recommend the Fried Plantains and chicken Fataya-Pies (both chicken and beef came with our order, but I just favor the chicken one) which are served with a fantastic tomato-like sauce. Getting the appetizer sampler platter was a great introduction to some of the other appetizers. The Senegalese egg rolls came with a sweet chili dipping sauce and back eyed pea fritters were dipped in this nice dark green sauce as seen in the middle of sampler plate. It was my first time having senegambian food and Isaiah and Nene came through with the recommendations on what to get and how to eat it! We arrived around noon on a Wednesday. The lobby was clean and orderly. Music videos were playing on the big screen. We were promptly seated and gave our orders. The ginger pineapple drink was so delicious and I tried to drink it as slow as I could. I wanted gulp it down and order another one. But I wanted to save room for my fried snapper and rice. The snapper was absolutely delicious!!!! I couldn't remember what chicken dish my cousin got. He often goes to many parts of Africa and he cooks. He said that his food tasted like what he cooks; so I guess he was very satisfied and said that he would return on his next visit to Vegas. You really have to keep coming back to try everything.
