Even though they noticed my nose looked crooked all of a sudden, I denied it out of fear, because I was afraid of doctors/hospitals at the time. I couldn't breathe well out of my right nostril. A few years later I started to notice the change in my face due to this unaddressed fracture. I hated how I looked in the mirror and I didn't feel like myself. In my late teens I went to my primary doc, told them I think I broke my nose, and explained the injury. The doctor took a look at me and said my nose was completely normal, didn't address the obstructed right nostril, and said my nose just changed because of puberty and it was my underlying genetics that made me look that way. I was disappointed but accepted what they said because they were an MD, and I didn't want to undergo an unnecessary procedure. Fast forward many years and I just couldn't shake the feeling that something was not right. I stumbled upon a picture of myself before the injury and that was the final straw that led me to seek a second opinion. I searched online for different docs and wanted to find someone who specialized in this form of reconstruction and cosmetic procedure. Long story short, I found Dr. Aminpour. The second he walked into the examination room, without even reading my file, he took one look at me and said "You broke your nose." I cannot emphasize enough how relieving this was for me. I felt like I was crazy for seeing something wrong when my primary doc told me there wasn't. Dr. Aminpour then discovered my septum was deviated through the physical exam, because it was obvious to him that I wasn't passing much air through the right nostril. I was very nervous on surgery day but he did a great job of reassuring me and easing my nerves. I can't tell you how much this procedure changed my life for the better. I got a combo septo/rhinoplasty. After I was cleared to take the bandages off, I left my house to run errands and saw my reflection in a car window. And for the first time in years, I loved what I saw. I felt like MYSELF. Finally my outward appearance matched what I felt on the inside. I asked Dr. Aminpour to make my nose look as similar as possible to what it was before my injury and he did so wonderfully. I stated my concerns about having a nose that had too much of a upturned swoop and a tip that was too thin/pointy. He reassured me that he wouldn't create that look and left the tip alone. The result is natural-looking AND... Taking a real full inhale for the first time in 2 decades made me realize what I was missing for so long. BUT at Dr ARFAI'S office in NR, the staff is exceptional as well as the doctor. We've had plenty of appointments for my 90 year-old mother over the last few months and he has done everything he possibly could to get her out of pain with success that would last a couple months or two. Finally, he recommended something called a spinal stimulator to minimize her pain that she's had for at least 40 years. Each staff member is so well trained in their various areas and know their craft well. Excellent training!!! They show respect and patience, especially for the elderly and when the staff is that well trained, you know it comes from the top. I highly recommend this Office for pain management and compassion. She had already been assigned to him, and her insurance plan was active. I called the office three days in a row and left messages. When I finally reached a staff member, she very quickly checked the insurance portal and told me she could not find my mom's name. I had just gotten off the phone with the insurance company, who confirmed that my mom was in the system and assigned to Dr. Sheybani. When I tried to explain this, the staff member repeatedly gave the same response and did not make any additional effort to re-check or search more thoroughly. She then told me that the doctor was not accepting new patients--despite the fact that he is listed by the insurance as a provider who is accepting new patients. Because of this contradiction, I went in person to the public office to clarify what was happening. There, I confirmed again that my mom is in the system and that Dr. Sheybani is indeed her assigned doctor. I am a healthcare service provider myself, and I understand how critical respectful communication and client relations are in a medical setting. Regardless of how skilled a physician may be, the front office staff are the first point of contact--and they represent the practice. This is a medical office, not a retail store; patients are often worried, unwell, or caring for vulnerable loved ones. The dismissive and unhelpful attitude we encountered suggests that the staff would greatly benefit from additional training in professionalism, empathy, and problem-solving.

I usually rely on my GP for referrals, but this time I searched online and chose him because he was the only provider offering a relatively early in-person appointment. I arrived on time for what I had specifically requested and confirmed as an in-person visit. However, the receptionist (or office manager) greeted me rudely and unpleasantly, insisting it was scheduled as a Zoom appointment. No one called the day before to confirm, despite standard practice. When I handed over my insurance card, she thrust an iPad at me in a hostile manner to sign again, with no courtesy or explanation. Her tone and attitude were so consistently unpleasant that I wondered why someone so unhappy would remain in a patient-facing medical role,there are plenty of opportunities elsewhere in healthcare. Eventually, I was seen by Dr. Rokaw, who appeared to be a rather large, older physician (in practice for over 40 years). I mentioned I'd done some personal research on Hashimoto's to better understand my condition, and he responded dismissively with something like, 'If you already know the answers, why are you here?' His bedside manner felt condescending, abrupt, and uninterested--he seemed to go out of his way to make me feel foolish rather than addressing my concerns helpfully. Overall, the visit was unproductive and left me feeling dismissed. Given his long tenure, advanced age, and what appeared to be a sedentary build suggesting limited personal focus on physical health, it might be time for Dr. Rokaw to consider retirement. He could benefit from stepping away to prioritize exercise, improve his own well-being, and perhaps work on more respectful patient interactions. I strongly advise others--especially those with chronic autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's--to run the other way and seek a more engaged, compassionate provider elsewhere.

As someone currently in nursing school, I really appreciate how supportive he is -- he always makes sure I have everything I need, and it's extra inspiring knowing he used to be a nurse himself! He truly understands what it's like to be on both sides of healthcare. I'm a woman in my 20s, and he always makes me feel comfortable, respected, and cared for, especially during the more stressful or scary moments. You can tell he loves what he does and really wants the best for his patients.
