Tomales Bay Kayak Trip Expertly guided by Leo and Brad Meet at 9AM, orientation prep, meet and greet. (small group. yay!) In the water by 10:30 Paddle around the bay on a tour tailored for the participants. See Hog Island, oyster beds, Cormorants, Pelicans, jelly fish, bat rays, star fish, seals, crabs, and other sea critters. Lunch (BYO) Paddle into some coves and a tiny sea cave in the white cliffs. Back by 4pm tired and happy. The guides were knowledgeable about the bay, the wildlife, environmental impact, nature, kayaking, and safety. We were in good hands. It was a much better trip than if we had just rented two kayaks and noodled around all day. They made it fun informative and friendly. While in between sights, we learned a lot of useful kayaking tips. The equipment isn't top notch, but is clean and in operable condition. The worst thing was the seat. My ass didn't deserve that kind of punishment. It has better karma than that. Lastly- I forgot my own advice and cut the cheese in my wetsuit again. Dammit!!!! As a reminder to all similarly minded people- 1. It's a time delay death bomb. 2. You only hurt yourself. 3. The wetsuit mutes the sound, but the kayak amplifies it by 10.

Staycation? Weekend warrior? This is the place to be today!

My sister, nephew and I wanted to do Middle Fork this year and I remember it being an adrenaline rush and challenging but so fun- We picked a Tuesday so it was not crowded, but when it ended up being just the three of us in the raft with Juli, I was a little nervous, remembering how intimidating tunnel chute was- and I didn't have the security of a full raft of people to weigh down the raft and help paddle to build up speed. This just goes to show you how important a seasoned veteran rafting guide is Juli was amazing. He gave clear instructions, he was very calm, and he managed the raft like a pro. No no flipping over and no one fell out. So exciting! Now I want to go to Costa Rica and look up Whitewater excitement there and request Juli. Hope to do this at least one more time this year. If I lived closer, I would go more often. Ps- I read some people complaining that you have to pitch in to carry the raft from the water up to the trucks and from the trucks down to the water, I've only been with one company that did not ask you to do that. All the rest have always had the rafters help out in pitch-in.

The last few times I've decided to raft, it's been me and a gf. We bring our ice box and enjoy the American River. However, as of recent after getting our 4 person raft from the yard, where approximately fifteen guys were beating out to EDM and seemingly having a good time, we had to carry this monstrosity to the river's edge, which was about a quarter mile down a dirt path. EVERY previous year, one or two of those guys would assist with the walk down to the launch area. However, this time no one helped. I later learned there is a $30 charge to get your raft transported to the river's edge which was not pitched to us. Is that transported in the truck we saw appear or is that getting a couple of these guys to help us? Regardless, fortunately, my gf and I are in shape and were able to carry our enormous four person raft to the river. Honestly, it was not fun. I wonder what happened from the last time to this where no one helped. I also do not remember paying $30 when a couple guys took a walk down with us to help. I don't know why I received assistance in previous years but this time I did not. Be aware. You're carrying your own raft down unless you want to pay an extra $30 fee. Does that mean you have to wait at the river's edge for them to take it down in a car?? I don't know, but I did not appreciate the change from what I've been used to.

The trip was exceptionally well organized from start to finish. Our guide, Richard, was excellent--not only in leading us through the backcountry terrain but also in smoothly handling any logistical issues that came up. I learned a tremendous amount about backcountry access, avalanche assessment, and understanding danger in the field. Having the park essentially to ourselves made the experience even more special. The food and lodging were both great, providing comfort after long days in the snow. Most importantly, this trip taught me a lot about myself and my limits in the backcountry environment. Special thanks to Richard for professionally managing my health issues during the trip while keeping the experience fun and seamless for all the other participants. Highly recommended for anyone looking to develop their backcountry skills in a supportive, well-run environment.
