I wish that I could say that I was the one at our household who discovered Dropout Bakery, but I cannot. Instead it was my wife who, searching for someplace other than a supermarket to purchase a King Cake for our Mardi Gras celebration, found this fine bakery. Now, as I have never actually been to its location in downtown Mobile, it should be understood that this review is based solely on my experience with consuming their product. My wife learned that this bakery has an online ordering system, and that the product ordered through their website should be picked up the following morning. She further learned that, because of high demand, their in store product usually sales out within minutes of their opening each day. So as a first try she ordered a 6 inch King Cake, a small spinach quiche, and two petit-fours. The next morning she drove downtown and found, as she had learned it would be from online reviews, a long line to the bakery of customers waiting for the business to open. After going the long queue and finally upon reaching the interior, she found her online order waiting for her, separated from the other produce which was being quickly bought up by the customers in shop. This small business simply does not yet have the manpower or equipment to produce enough product to last beyond one day. Which is a good thing for customers who insist on same day freshness. The quiche and petit-fours did not survive long enough for me a get a photograph of each, but I did manage to get a photo of the King Cake, which I have included in this review. Finally, we found each item to be superbly delicious and very much worth the effort. We will be back again soon in order to sample more of their product, especially their larger King Cake when Mardi Gras season rolls around again next year.

At this point, it wouldn't feel like a Mobile trip without it. This visit was just as good as the previous ones. My wife and I shared one of their warm cinnamon rolls, and it continues to be one of the best things they make. It's served warm with a rich cream cheese icing that melts into every bite. Soft, flavorful, and indulgent without being overly sweet, it's become our tradition to split one before the drive home. We also picked up a few Red Velvet Whoopie Pies, which remain another favorite. The cake is incredibly moist, the cream filling is rich without being heavy, and it's hard to believe they're gluten free. Another item we always look forward to is their Oatmeal Cream Whoopie Pie. Unfortunately, they were sold out during this visit, but based on previous trips, it's one of our favorites and well worth trying if it's available. One of the things that impresses me most about Guncles is that the food doesn't feel like it's trying to compensate for being gluten free. The baked goods simply taste like excellent baked goods, period. The staff has always been friendly, welcoming, and consistently provides excellent service, making each visit enjoyable from start to finish. Favorites * Warm Cinnamon Roll * Red Velvet Whoopie Pie * Oatmeal Cream Whoopie Pie Three years, three visits, and the experience has been consistently outstanding. The size of the cinnamon roll could've been bigger but I don't think you could tell the difference from a normal cinnamon roll. It was all fresh and decadent. 10/10 if you're gluten free!

We had an amazing discussion with the lady running the shop while we nibbled our ice Cream. We also met quickly the owner Scott, a lovely man. The shop was started LONG LONG ago by 3 Georges, seriously. Scott and family has kept to the original recipes AND the old fashion Soda Fountain! The ice was yummy, the chocolate melted in our mouth. Made with the freshest ingredients clearly. This stop today was one of the highlights in our week long trip to Mobile. I sure do regret not finding the shop sooner ;)

It was the afternoon so they weren't fresh out of the oven or anything, but each was different and just beautiful. The price was about $3.25 or so each and they were boxed up very nicely. Well, since I am insulin-dependent making this stop wasn't high on the intelligence scale. So I improvised and drove to one of my little hang outs and waited for some buddies to arrive. My fiance works full time out of town (4+ hours away) and I normally live out of town (3 hours away), so coming in on a Tuesday for a cake tasting together is almost impossible for us. I asked if there was any way we could possibly work around this. I understand it's policy, but how difficult would it be a bit more accommodating by using email, scanning pictures, phone conversations, allowing a relative or MOH to come in, etc, for a consultation on those days? She begrudgingly set up an appointment for me. No questions about the size of our wedding, when it was, where it was, or what flavors I had in mind. I called other bakers around town and even though they were busy, they still were incredibly accommodating, even though they all pretty much have the same policies as no tastings on the weekends. I was really shocked at the way I was treated, so I called back to Couture Cakes to ask for the owner, since judging by the rudeness I assumed it was an underpaid receptionist. She had the audacity to argue with me, saying that she was not rude and that she remembered speaking with me. She became incredibly defensive, saying that she was not curt in anyway and that I was wrong. She finally apologized, and when I said thank you and that I still wanted to conduct business with her, she just said with utmost attitude "well then, do you even want to come in then?" WHAT EVEN!? I felt like I was in the twilight zone and was sent back to some sort of high school drama. This is the type of business that gives women owners a bad name! I am so disappointed because I was looking forward to using them for our large wedding regardless of the tasting. If this is the way their business is conducted I do not foresee this business lasting much longer. DO NOT GO HERE! Just because she did AJ McCarron's engagement cake doesn't give her the right to conduct poor business. Please, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. When you're in the throws of wedding planning the last thing you want to deal with is awful customer service.
