The establishment relatively recently came under new management. It was previously one of West End's numerous Vietnamese bakeries, and while it remains a bakery the new owners seem to be going for more of an up-market French boulangerie vibe. I ordered a filled baguette and a takeaway Di Bella coffee. The delivery of the baguette was instantaneous and while I waited for my coffee I didn't stand on ceremony, biting into the baguette and assessing their work. The bread itself was quite good, with a slight glaze to the crust and a pleasantly chewy inner. The toppings - chicken and avocado - fairly well-executed for a simple combination. The coffee however took too long to arrive, causing me concern about whether I'd be late for my appointment. What should for an experienced barista take 1-2 minutes tops took more like 4-5. Even worse, when the coffee arrived, it was insipid and milky, leading me to think the maker either didn't dose enough coffee into the group-head or used an insufficient one-shot for the large cup. Either way, it was a deflating first coffee for the day. The price also seemed a bit excessive at close to $12 for the coffee and baguette. Considering I could get a tasty roll significantly cheaper at one of the several Vietnamese bakeries in the neighbourhood, if I go back here it will probably be to buy bread for home use.

I once called in just to get a quiche which is ridiculous because that's probably the last thing this business is known for (it was amazing for your information), and walked out with 3 slices of cake, 3 Banoffe pies and 4 tarts. I took half of them home and the other half to Uni with me and before I could even explain to everyone what they were, they were gone. The Welsh Lady is a deceptive temptress who lures you in with her unassuming shop front, tucked away in Rosalie and STEALS YOUR WALLET AND YOUR WAISTLINE! Eventually returning both, one thinner, the other thicker (I'll let you guess which is which). Everything they bake here makes you want to quit life and die from a decadent, gluttonous overdose of sugary wonderment. Specializing in cakes to order they have everything you can imagine and more. Words can't do this place justice, so if you are wanting the perfect wedding or birthday cake, or simply just something sweet for any type of celebration The Welsh Lady should be your first port of call. P.S The Banoffe pies are out of this world, go now and get yourself one before they are deemed illegal.

Personally, I fall into the vanilla cake category but the Welsh Lady is the only cake shop that has the ability to make me question my allegiance to Team Vanilla. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, the muddier, richer, and more decadent the better, then the Welsh Lady is your holy grail. Her deep, dark mud cakes are so moist and dense that it's almost like she's mixed dark chocolate mousse into the batter. Most of my friends fall into Team Chocolate and I've become very used to being served a piece of chocolate birthday cake at parties and leaving it on the plate half finished. A couple of years ago at a dear friend's 21st I watched the cake be presented with a flourish. Chocolate again, I thought. I had to admit that it was a beautiful looking cake, covered in huge, elaborate chocolate curls and sprouting sparkly butterflies and stars on silver stems but I didn't expect my tastebuds to enjoy it as much as my eyes were. After one bite of the cake I knew there'd be no half-eaten leftovers on my plate this time. Through a mouthful of mud cake I demanded to know where my friend had gotten such a cake. 'MULSH NADY' she replied, her mouth was just as full as mine. 'Huh?'. She swallowed her chocolate-y mouthful and said 'Welsh Lady'. I nodded, swallowed, and went back for seconds.

I couldn't decide between a Miss Piggy cupcake, or the one with the strawberry cheescake icing (the latter ended up winning the coin toss), so I took it, along with my beautifully creamy cappacino, to devour on the small patio outside. And the cake? Well this is where I differ to most other people so far. I thought it was Ok...but I'm going to go off piste here and say that it was most definitely not the best I've eaten. (I've had better in...gasp...Shingle Inn). I was definitely more taken with the cuteness of the cafe than the cake itself. It should have been fluffier, the icing should have been tastier... Maybe I should have gone with the Miss Piggy after all???

The pink and white theme only adds to the cute factor, along with making it quite impossible for straight men to frequent this place. Inside is just as adorable, with a cosy little booth to one side and a display cabinet full of various cupcake flavours. There are many flavours to choose from; more traditional ones like chocolate and some fancier varieties such as marble, each of which has a chocolate seashell perched on the carefully iced top. I absolutely love seashells but when it comes to cupcakes I believe it's the original and the best, so I chose a vanilla flavoured one. I have to say I was disappointed. The base was delicious and exactly what I would expect of a cupcake, even if it was a little heavy, but the icing was not. The main reason I love cupcakes is because of the amazingly creamy, buttery icing. The icing here is harder and can absolutely not be described as creamy. It's still a nice place and the cupcakes are presented so well that I'm sure I will be enticed into trying them again.

Firstly, I would recommend that you get in early - before 8AM - before they start selling out of some of their products! They are very popular with the inner-West crowd and it is easy to see why. The food is fresh and delectable. As a frequent takeaway breakfast customer, I have had tried a number of their savory items including the Eggs Benedict pie, Ham and Cheese croissant, Croque-Monsieur, and a number of their savory pies. Each just as good as the last. The Croqe-Monsieur is my pick but all the food is filling and reasonably priced. Customer service can be a hit-and-miss but it is quick and efficient. Finally, if you are going to get a Ham and Cheese croissant I would recommend that you get them to heat up a fresh one rather than getting one from the warmer as they can harden up after too long in the heat. Bon Appétit!

By 10:15, nothing had arrived, so we enquired - apparently we had been "forgotten." The Croissant arrived about five minutes later. My breakfast didn't arrive for another ten minutes. By that time, my wife had to leave for an appointment. I ate alone and had to walk home. The meal was bad. The soft boiled eggs were hard boiled. My croissant was so over-cooked, it was inedible and crumbly all the way through. The only saving grace was the bread and jam.
