I hired Greg Yost, owner of the firm Hanley and Yost, to do a total renovation of my house in…read moreSeptember 2016. We signed a balloon contract for $282,000, so that there was a maximum amount to be spent. Mr. Yost billed me in increments of $20,000 to $30,000 every 3 weeks, but he never gave me any specific invoices. I trusted him, and knowing there was a finite maximum, I just paid the bills. The work didn't seem to be progressing, but he repeatedly assured me that this was just how construction went, and it would all be completed by the deadline of June 2017. My neighbors told me later that he only brought a crew in at the times when I visited, and the house lay idle for the other 4 days of the week. Meanwhile some oddities occurred. He didn't build the roof line according to the building plan. He approved a chimney for $7500 over my maximum allowance without telling me. He put in windows that were not symmetrical. He did not put in the underpinnings for the curved wall that was a major part of the great room plan. He allowed trucks to drive over my raised bed perennial garden and ruin it. Then he dumped 7 truckloads of crushed stone on my lawn, destroying it, without discussing it with me -- I never would have permitted this. He had heavy trucks drive over the lawn in March, although this work was supposed to have occurred in January, and they sunk in the mud, destroying my underground electrical cable, water pipes, and the water drainage system, so the yard flooded and the house had neither power nor water for the next 8 months. When completion deadline arrived, I had paid Yost $181,00 and the house didn't even have walls. The electrical work was not done, nor was the plumbing nor insulation, let alone floors or anything else in the interior. I fired Mr. Yost, but no other contractor would take over because it was such a mess. Plus, Yost didn't pay his subcontractors but told them I hadn't paid him. Some of them knew the situation and continued to work with me, but the plumber put a lien on my property. I had done all my homework, which was very positive about the firm of Hanley and Host. However, I later found out that the high quality work was done by Mr. Hanley, and he is no longer with the firm. I spent my life savings on my dream house, and it truly became a nightmare.
