We checked into our AirBnB and took a walk to get some goodies for the fridge and see our "new" neighborhood. We passed Cafe Rosco and it looked good but it was too early for dinner, so stopped in to see if we needed reservations. We were assured we didn't, we said, "see you laler," and headed back to our apartment to unpack groceries, and relax from the travel. We walked back to Rosco's sometime between 7 - 7:30 p.m. They were busy, and we were greeted with a "You're back!" and shown to a comfortable table. It's a solid Italian menu and while it features pizza, we shared an appetizer of steamed mussels, and ordered a pasta entree of spaghetti with clams, anchovies and garlic and a veal dish, both perfectly seasoned and cooked: al dente pasta, perfect red sauce, not too sweet or acidic, and a veal that was tender as could be, and shared a chocolate dessert. The service was great without being intrusive, the staff friendly and helpful, and here's the real fun part - the owner came over to ask how we enjoyed our meal, immediately spotted our accents as Americans, and asked how long were we to be in Melbourne and what have we seen, etc. When we told him it was our first night in the city, he sat down, quickly pulled out a pad, made a list and noted what was to be seen, where to go, and what to be tasted. It was a much appreciated list. Later, when I looked at reviews of the restaurant, I noted this was not usual for the owner to do. While some might find this intrusive, we found it delightfully helpful, and fun. We enjoyed the experience so much, we returned later in the week for another dinner - this time pizza - which was as good as the pasta and veal. If you're in the neighborhood - do it. You won't be disappointed! read more
