Asian food is underrepresented in this fair city, especially Chinese food. There are few…read morerestaurants in this category that are worthy of any distinction, like in many cities where Chinese delicacies proliferate with but a few being truly remarkable; and while this might be the case with Fa-Yian, I will rely on sentiment and bias for this 4-star review. Life as a culinary explorer begins at a young age, and it is here where standards and reference points are established. This Chinese restaurant, with its shouty and ever-present owners, became my reference point for Chinese food and culture isngeneral. It is here where I met the Buddha, the red Chinese lamps, pastel tablecloths, and lazy susans that I thought were unique to this place but are actually commonplace for most Chinese places in Mexico and the US. Through this innocent wonder I recorded the taste of Chow Mein, fried and steamed rice, beef broccoli, fried shrimp and egg rolls, sweet and sour sauce, noodle soup, and the glorious orange chicken. Chinese food became an exotic adventure that could only be found here. Many years later, on our most recent visit, the food seems ordinary with no extravagance to it. The orange chicken and fried foods are still good and salty and sweet, but it no longer offers that amazement that I experienced in my youth. Still, Fa-Yian holds a special holds a special place in my heart, one whose food might not compare to places we've been to in LA, NY, or even Beijing, but is still a standard to which I will compare all others.

This restaurant was nicely decorated and was quiet on a Tuesday night. I'm betting it's packed on the weekend. Service was very attentive and exceeded expectations. Menus were available in English which was a plus. Appetizer of rangoons was loaded with meat. I had the spicy chicken noodles which were really tasty. Sauce was sweet and a hint of spice. Noodles had a texture more like an Italian noodle rather than what you expect with a Chinese dish. My colleague ordered a fried rice which looked moist and he almost polished off the entire huge serving. The servings here are large! A palate cleansing frozen lemonade in a shot glass with a fortune cookie was served. Very unusual and excellent. Dessert was a Coco Flan. Packed with coconut flakes and unabashedly sweet. Overall one of the best meals enjoyed in Mexico City.

But I give them credit for providing excellent service! Now onto the not so good part. The prices are excessive. If you are from the US, the prices are above and beyond the US prices. The two of us spent over $100. I had not expected that. Let me give an example - 3 egg rolls for 325 pesos! That's $16 USD, or over $5 for each egg roll! A small soup was over $10 USD, not to mention how excessively salty it was! We wanted to have the Peking duck. There was no option to order 1/2 a duck as there were just two of us. So we decided to order the whole duck anyway, for about $60 USD! The duck was ok. But the pancakes and the sauce did not meet the standard, and the rice that came with it could have used a bit more cooking time. Overall, it was a highly mixed experience. I felt the most of the cost of the dinner went towards paying for the look of the restaurant and the service, very little would go to justifying the quality and the value of the food. Not recommended.

It was also only a 10-minute walk from my hotel. All signs pointing to a great meal and experience. What a disappointment! As I approached the restaurant, there was a young men in black with menus inviting me to come on in. I asked him if I could have a table at the balcony and he quickly brought me to the perfect spot. That's where this great experience began and ended. It was a great place to sit and watch the world go by on the street below. I really enjoyed that. My stomach has been a little queasy the last day or so which is quite normal when I travel, so I decided that it might be best to order something kind of neutral. I ordered wonton soup with shrimp wontons. The soup was nothing special. Some broth with very little else other than the wontons. No vegetables other than a couple of pieces of onion and scallipns, no noodles, no nothing. What was even more disappointing was that the waiter never checked back in with me one time to see how it was or if I wanted something else. So I did not feel totally ripped off, I sat for a while after I finished my soup to enjoy the view. I kept looking for my waiter for the check but he was nowhere to be found. I saw him off in the distance a couple of times but I could not grab his attention. So finally I asked somebody else to help me I was tempted to not leave any tip at all but I know these waiters make very little and so I gave him 10% which is cheap for me but he really did not deserve that! I left unsatisfied and disappointed and I cannot recommend this place to anyone else. They have been around for a long time and there were a lot of people there so either I ordered the wrong thing or people are not as discriminating as I am when it comes to Chinese food. After all, I grew up in New York and they have an amazing Chinatown with amazing food! The only redeeming factor was that is just a few minutes from the Palace of Fine Arts where I'm going tonight to see the Ballet Folklorico, which I heard is fantastic. Hopefully it'll take my mind off that lousy soup. Btw... Cost close to $10 which is the same thing I pay in the United States which is unusual for here. Most things are much cheaper. So much for Hong King. Sent from AOL on Android

Food was fresh and it didn't take very long to get our food. The place has a balcony that overlooks the street below. Restaurant was clean and staff was very nice. We didn't get a chance to take a picture of the food because my husband and teenage boys were starving. This place has plenty of tables for large parties. Just trust me when I say this is a MUST try!
