From the moment we arrived, we new this was not your ordinary restaurant, Chinese or otherwise. Though it was night and we are first time visitors to MX, it looks as if the restaurant is set in the middle of an upscale residential neighborhood and the approach to Hunan looks as if you're arriving at an exclusive country club. It is surrounded by trees and in it's own little sanctuary. This is a difficult place to come without speaking any Spanish and my Spanish is nursery school level at best. There appeared to be no one on staff who spoke English, however, there was enough snobbery going around that I doubt that was true. In any case, the service is excellent (would have been even better if I spoke better Spanish...) and the interior of the restaurant is simple elegant! This is my kind of place; carpeted floor to muffle sound, tables spaced apart either for COVID or just normally, lighting that is subdued but bright enough to read your menu by the fake candlelight and American jazz standards playing softly. I loved it! The place was not full and we did not have a reservation, so we got a table immediately. Even if you had to wait, the bar/lounge is like a comfortable living room with cushy chairs and lots of space - I would have enjoyed the wait. There is a full bar, a large wine selection and the servers make many of the drinks table side with an abundance of flair. The menu was in Spanish but ironically, all of the names of the dishes are in English. We ordered the Moo-Shi appetizer with pork (though the mistakenly brought shrimp) and prepared it tableside. We each had 2 pancaked rolls and it would have been enough for a plentiful entree. The shrimp was moist, succulent and plentiful, the veggies crisp and the sauce sweet and not too heavy. Quite delicious. For entrees we had Hunan eggplant, a dish we frequently have at home and always enjoy. This time the eggplant is cut very thin and still served with a sticky, garlicky sauce with a bit of sweetness and a mild spiciness. It was very good, though I think a bit heavy on the sauce and because the eggplant was cut so thinly, it was difficult to taste it's flavor. We also ordered Shrimp Puff - a dish that had not discernible "puff" with it and again, heavy on the sauce. And finally, though we ordered plain rice, we received fried rice and it was the best I've ever had. Chocked full of the same large and savory shrimp, veggies and lots of moistness with lovely flavor. I neglected to mention that I ordered a Mango Margarita before dinner. It was frozen though surprisingly not super cold, which was nice. Served in a Martini glass with a salt rim, it was delicious. We skipped dessert as we were over full with loads of leftovers and got the bill. This was the most expensive place we've eaten in Mexico and with only 1 drink, 2 main dishes and an appetizer, the bill was over $100. There was a charge on it that I could not understand (I was told it wasn't the tip) and no one was able to help me, so we paid it all. Would I return? Definitely. While I love Mexico, the food becomes tiresome to me very quickly and it was lovely to have an alternative cuisine. read more
