After a little research, on our one night in Heidelberg we decided to travel a bit off the…read moretourist-path to find a nice meal. We made the walk from the Altstadt to Lutherstrasse (just over the new bridge) and found this little restaurant.
The decor is pretty standard, but the place has loads of character. The menu is hand written - I'm not sure I could have read it if it was all in English, let alone with my meagre German, but our waitress spoke English and was very helpful. We decided to start off with a Flammenkuchen (an Alsatian tarte flambe - think very, very thin crust flatbread with cream, onions, meat and cheese) which was the best one we had on our trip. I opted for the asparagus special - a pound of white asparagus with hollandaise sauce, potatoes and a side of pork schnitzel. The boy had pork cutlets in a calvados sauce which came with Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) and salad. We both ordered a riesling with dinner and it was delightful.
Both meals were excellent and this was the best price for an asparagus meal that we saw in Heidelberg, Cologne, Dusseldorf or Hamburg.
The only downside to our visit was that although our server was very friendly she was not terribly attentive. However, this is kind of normal in Germany so I can't really knock them for it.
Not normal in Germany: they take credit cards! Rejoice!
If you're in Heidelberg I highly recommend this restaurant.
