An astonishingly rude and humiliating experience at Café Florian.
I arrived hoping to enjoy a pleasant lunch while exploring beautiful Bayreuth. Instead, I experienced what was easily the most unpleasant restaurant encounter of my visit to Germany.
Upon entering, a waiter informed me that all tables were occupied but offered me a seat at the counter. Perfectly reasonable, I thought. I took my seat and began reviewing the menu.
Moments later, the very same waiter returned to announce that they were only serving breakfast and that he had been told I was not permitted to eat at the counter after all. He delivered this announcement loudly enough that diners at neighboring tables stopped their conversations and turned to stare.
Thoroughly embarrassed, I quietly gathered my belongings and left.
Apparently, offering a customer a seat and then publicly informing him that he cannot actually sit there constitutes hospitality at Café Florian.
I cannot comment on the quality of the food, as I was never afforded the opportunity to try it. I can, however, comment on the service: disorganized, embarrassing, and spectacularly unwelcoming.
Bayreuth is a beautiful city filled with wonderful people. My advice? Enjoy its many other establishments and spare yourself this particular experience. read more
