For those who are not familiar with the name Paul Bocuse, he was one of Lyon's greatest chefs who specialized in nouvelle French cuisine. He passed in January 2018, but left a lasting impression in the culinary world. He also operated a chain of brasseries in Lyon, named Le Nord, L'Est, Le Sud and L'Ouest, each of which specialize in a different aspect of French cuisine. I happened to also dine at Le Sud, so check out my review. In popular culture, Bocuse inspired the character of chef Auguste Gusteau in the 2007 animated film Ratatouille. Check out the movie if you haven't already, it's quite entertaining! Upon arrival at the restaurant, we were greeted at our car and escorted into the restaurant, where the restaurant team warmly welcomed us and showed us to our table in the grand dining room. The dining room was immaculate with sparkling chandeliers dangling from the ceiling. The attention to detail was impeccable. There was even a stool for my bag. To say the restaurant was fancy would be an understatement. For our visit, the 3 of us experienced tastings from the Centenary Menu (370 € per person not including beverages). With the wine, sparkling water, and juices, our bill came to a little over 1400 €. What can I say, we have an incredibly generous CEO who treats his team extremely well! Our menu consisted of the following: 1. Amuse-bouche (Lukewarm langoustine, crispy avocado and edible crab) 2. Frog legs 3. Quenelles of lobster and pikeperch, Champagne sauce & Tradition Elite caviar (CEO replaced the frog legs with this lobster dish) 4. Vegetable risotto with sorrel emulsion and its lentil tuile biscuit 5. Filet of sole 6. Green frosted Chartreuse 7. Whole truffled Bresse chicken PDO cooked in a bladder, cream sauce with morel mushrooms 8. Fresh and matured cheeses from our terroirs 9. Sorbet (CEO replaced cheese with the sorbet) 10. The Chocolate - a grand cru from Venezuela, puffed rice slivers, lemon caviar -OR- The Monts d'Or 'Bergeron' apricot flavored with passion berries and marjoram, tangy kalamansi juice The dishes were all phenomenal and beautifully plated. They were a true masterpiece, both visually stimulating and satisfying to the palette. If I have one critique, it would be the Green Frosted Chartreuse. I did not enjoy this dish only because the liquor poured over it was overwhelmingly strong. For parts not touched by the liquor, I enjoyed the refreshing taste. It would have been appreciated if the waiter inquired whether we preferred the dish with or without the liquor. The wait staff was very attentive and took excellent care of us. Overall, we had a lovely 4-hour dinner, from 8:00pm until midnight. It was quite an unforgettable experience and was the highlight of my trip to Lyon. I'm extremely grateful to my CEO for the opportunity to dine at this very fine establishment. I'm one lucky gal to work for such a wonderful company who appreciates its people!

Another reviewer said something to the effect of "yea, I guess if you like old-school, traditional,…read moregrand French fine dining, this place is probably OK for you...". Well... I guess we do, and it was far more than OK for us. Restaurant Paul Bocuse was a huge Bucket List item for both of us, and I haven't seen my wife smile that much in a long time. (L'Auberge du Pont de Collognes, otherwise known as Restaurant Paul Bocuse, opened in 1924 and celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2024. It is still, IMO, the grand dame of classic French cuisine, and greatly helped to make Lyon (where the Michelin Guide was founded) the foodie capital of the world. Today the restaurant holds 2 Michelin stars, down from the 3 stars (the highest gastronomic accolade in the world) it held for 55 years from 1965 to 2020. For the record, that's the longest holder of the prestigious 3 stars in the world. Paul died in 2018 at age 91, and then - in a move that's been called "an absurd and unfair decision" - in 2020 Michelin removed one star. I guess there are politics in everything). The meal was perfect, exquisite, extraordinary, memorable, wonderful - worth the trip and the cost. Service was perfect. Food was delicious, with several items making my "best things I've ever eaten in my life" list. There was nothing they could have done better. Nothing. The restaurant is gorgeous, and has been recently updated. My wife asked the sommelier to bring us 2 glasses of white wine he recommends (we were having a lot of fish) - with no guidance or price limit from her. I was a little anxious about their surprise cost (which I wouldn't learn until the end of the evening), and a little more anxious when she ordered a second glass... :-) The wines were both delicious, and paired perfectly with our meals. When the check came, one was $18 and the other was $36. The sommelier could have brought glasses that were much more expensive, but because she trusted him, he was kind and rewarded us with wines he actually likes that were quite inexpensive (by this restaurant's standards) - a very, very classy move in his part. ATTIRE - attire is always an issue when you're travelling abroad and only have 1 fancy meal planned. I didn't want to take up precious suitcase space lugging a sportcoat all across France for this one meal, so did some research and it seemed the restaurant did not require a jacket. So I packed a nice pair of slacks, an upscale golf shirt, and good shoes. I was the only male in our dining room without a coat on, but felt 100% welcomed, 100% comfortable, and I'd skip the sportcoat again (but to be clear, my pants, shirt and shoes were quite nice). She ordered 1 of the tasting menus, I ordered a different tasting menu. It was wonderful to share tastes and experience twice as many delicious bites. All in all, it was an exquisite and expensive evening (we knew it would be costly), but for us it was probably the finest meal either has ever eaten, and we've dined all over the world in some pretty damn good restaurants. Bucket list - check...!!! OMG, now we can't wait to go back...! :-)

Let me tell you why I paid this place a visit twice in 3 days! Atmosphere/Appearance: Right among the cobblestone streets in the surrounding downtown area is this gem. It's a lil' hidden and is only distinguishable by either looking through the big windows or the lil' sign that hands right above the stone archway. The interior design carries in that older European architecture that's present right on the outside. There's lots of stone everywhere, big picture frames, a small bar at the back of the restaurant and the see-in kitchen to the left. There are only a few tables so be sure to have reservations or some good luck! Lol. Service: Stéfane (@stf_nws on Instagram )is the owner/operator/chef/bartender/everything. Lol. He was SO FREAKING COOL and so chill. Despite having to literally do everything in the restaurant, he did it with a passion, with style, with flare and with love. You could just tell he put his soul into this restaurant and into this food. Food: On both of my visits I went with their big gourmet plate. I can't remember the official name of the plate, but it was gigantic. Lol. It comes with a plate FULL of smoked goodies! Beef ribs, pulled pork, sausage, chicken and the choice of 2 sides. For my sides I went with the beans and side salad. My goodness. Everything was FANTASTIC and smoked to perfection. I don't even wanna single anything out, but the ribs FLOORED me. They were so incredible juicy, smokey and full of flavor, but you can't go wrong with any of the components of this meal. Value: I can't remember the exact amount, but I believe my plate was around 35€ and absolutely worth it. In conclusion, do I even need to tell you how much I loved this place? It was intimate, tasty, affordable and gave you such a great experience. I can't wait to visit this place again!

He found a table for us even though the place was booked solid. Make reservations. Our meals were fantastic. The burger was a chef's creation and superb. The mixed meats plate was enormous and also superb. Don't skip his cardiac fries. Not typical fries. They're chunks of potatoes maybe fried, roasted, or sauced. I don't know. But they were magical. Don't skip them. Not much English is spoken, so we muddled through with Google translate. We ate what the chef suggested and we were thrilled. New World Smoke is a true hidden gem. Glad we found it.
