It was freezing cold outside, but I must have a gelato! This was my very first gelato in Italy…read more 3 scoops of gelato for €2.50. A real deal indeed! I had the pistachio, zuppa inglese, and bacio. There was a mini cone to scoop the gelato. So cute! People say if the pistachio gelato is good, that means the rest of the gelato in the gellateria are good too. The pistachio was good with a smooth texture. Zuppa inglese (English soup) is very popular in Emilia-Romagna region. I had never tasted any gelato like zuppa inglese. It had sponge cake dipped in Alchermes, a herb liqueur and thick egg custard with lemon zest. This explains the bright colours in the gelato. It tasted like a mixture of cake and ice cream. The other flavour Bacio (chocolate hazelnut) was good too. Not too sweet. The chocolate did not overwhelm the aroma of the hazelnut. I will return for more gelato!

Even so, the service was extremely accommodating to our (very) limited Italian skills, and we felt well taken care of by the man and woman who were there (I think they were the owners). I recommend coming here for lunch, as the menu consists mainly of panini and bruschetta, with a few pasta specials written on the wall. Our table ordered some bruschetta to share (roasted home-garden-grown veggies topped with pecorino), and each got our own fresh pasta dishes from the specials menu. Our meal here was one of the most memorable on the trip not only because of the friendly service and fresh food, but also the lovely view, the bottle of local San Gimignano red, and the stash of art supplies that playfully encourages you to decorate your placemats while you enjoy the atmosphere. Grazie!

While you're here, you might as well grab some food, coffee and/or dessert. We ended up coming here for brunch and got a sandwich, iced Caffe, reg Caffe, and last but not least, the delectable Pistachio Mousse (thx to a tip from a fellow yelper!) I don't know if we were super hungry or what, but all the food at all of the stations looked really, really good. However, I didn't bother w anything I can easily get in the US. If weather permits, definitely chow down on the tables outside. There's a lovely arrangement of tables and canopies, all exquisitely decked out in Gucci-fashion. The VAT refund center is located directly across from the Gucci store, so I ended up coming back a second time to get a €5 Frappuccino.
