I met a good friend at Caffe San Marco in Sarriá this morning, and we were having a lovely time in the cafe which appeared quite charming with nice atmosphere. I was drinking a tea and eating a cookie, and my Catalan friend hadn't ordered anything. We were having a great conversation. The head waiter (or perhaps owner) approached us to take her order. She politely declined, as she was not yet thirsty. He became visibly irritated with her for not ordering anything. She asked him if he had a problem, and he said yes! He told her quite aggressively in Spanish that he had a problem that she was sitting in his cafe without ordering anything. She explained that she was accompanying me, as I was thirsty and hungry but she was not. He was quite rude to my friend in front of me, and I was shocked by this man's lack of respect and poor manners. You would never see this behavior by a server or business owner in my country. It is very bad business too, as we would have returned there many times but now I will not return and I will advise all of my friends in Barcelona not to go there either. This is the second time I have witnessed someone being hassled in Caffe San Marco about not ordering. The first time, I thought I must not be understanding correctly... Now I know that this is the genuine attitude of the owners, and I am shocked. I advise you to take your business elsewhere where you are welcome. read more
