ORIGIN: Caffe' Panzera opened nearly one hundred years ago and continues to be owned by the same family. LOCATION: The cafe remains it its original location on a street corner near the Milan Station. As a result, it is a popular and familiar destination for visitors looking to refresh before or after travel. CONCEPT: Caffe Panzera serves the diverse needs of visitors and local residents alike ... as a coffee house, bakery, and restaurant/bar. EXPERIENCE: My experience represents being a visitor looking for a place to have breakfast, unwind from travel, and pick up some pastries. In this way it is aligned with a big component of what Caffe Panzera offers. There are several breakfast combinations on the menu and I chose "Caffe Salata". Anticipating visitors from near and far, the menu includes an English translation. The combination includes a cup of espresso, a freshly made sandwich composed of cheese, thin slices of cured ham (Prosciutto) on a warmed long roll, and, to my delight fresh squeezed blood orange juice. I enjoyed each very much. As shops might be closed at my final destination, I picked up some pastries -- Cannoli and Sfogliatelle. ATMOSPHERE: There is seating inside and outside the restaurant, densely packed, with glass-topped cloth covered tables. When I visited it was off hours, so there was no sense of feeling crowded. The original counter, depicted in photographs, remains intact. SERVICE: The server kindly offered me a glass of water to extend my relaxing perch. I thought this was considerate... I didn't feel pushed out the door, as is the case in many U.S. urban restaurants. Thoughtful details... the curved water glass and paper doily, elevated the otherwise simple drink. TIPS: One time I received pastries in a paper bag, another in a sturdy box. I suggest requesting a box if you would like your pastries to present well at arrival. A bathroom is located up a steep and narrow staircase. In reading other's reviews, some are apparently referring to a location inside of the train station. This original location is outside of the train station at a street corner and likely reflects a very different experience. Although an English translation is available on the menu, it is easy to order in the language of the server. This is respectful and likely welcomed despite foreign accent. read more

What a bad customer service. Seven of us went in for lunch. While we were deciding on the items to order, command came from the waiter that we must order minimum 6 entrees. He was so rude. So basically do not go in there if you all want to order an item. However the Pollo pizza was good and large enough for two people. Mediterranean pizza came with clam and shrimp with shells so it was a bad idea to order that. Compared to other places, the prices were reasonable. read more

This restaurant is beside the central station so we went here as soon as we got off the train we were starving. The pizza was ok nothing to rave about. Our server didn't speak English but he understood a little. I really wanted to try the tart for dessert but the server didn't really understand me so we ordered a cappuccino and left. Stayed in Milan for one night near central station and went out for dinner at caffe Panzera. The food and was excellent

Caffe Panzera is the best place to go get your morning pastry and capuccino. While I was solo traveling in Milano, I would go there every morning and get the same thing, Capuccino e brioche di cioccolato. Every morning when I walked in I was greeted by what seemed to be the owner (tall big guy) and the sweet older lady sitting down by the register. Definitely recommend if you are near Centrale or even Milano. read more

Love this place! Such a joy when I come back to Italy, arriving from the airport, and I finally get to enjoy some quality food! This place looks nice, has free wifi and it has good quality food. It's pricey though! The owner is always around supervising and helping out the staff. Great worker. The food as I said, it's good. You can enjoy things such as a sweet mozzarella di Bufala and Parma ham sandwich, great high quality ingredients. Or also many many desserts. The place is nice. We had the most delicious moscato!! My daughter loved her pizza, my salad was fresh and delicious. I didn't love the lasagna I ordered. It didn't look appetizing nor did it taste it. Mind you I was starving & I love lasagna and had eaten lasagna in several different restaurants and that lasagna sucked. However, I did get their Sicilian cannolis from the bakery and My Oh My were they good!!! The place was clean, the ambiance was nice. Our waiter seemed impatient and frustrated since we didn't speak Italian which kinda took away from the experience but he did his job. I'd go back for the wine, salad & Cannoli. Ruined our last meal in Milan. Our party of four arrived at the restaurant and were seated by the host in the bar area as we initially just wanted to have drinks. The host did not greet us when we arrived. That in itself gave me an unpleasant vive. Our waiter was pleasant enough though. He took our drink order and brought us appetizers. Things were going ok at that point. We decided to order food but were told we'd have to move into the main dinning area. We were already seated at a table so we weren't sure why food could not served at our table, but it was no big deal for us to move. We looked at the menu but the waiter never came back to tell us where to move. We were all finished with our drinks and were just having conversation while we waited for direction from our waiter. We tried a few times to get his attention but he never looked in our direction. The place was relatively busy but not enough to prevent him from glancing over to check on our table. We waited for about 15-20 minutes before we were able to flag down the waiter. At that point some in our party decided that they no longer wanted to eat there due to the bad service. We asked our waiter for our check when we finally managed to get his attention. We decided to pay at the register rather that wait for our server. When we were paying, we mentioned to the host that we did not get good service as we were never checked on to refill drinks or be move to the dining area. The host gave us a dirty look and said you are on holiday, and besides you could have just raised our hands. Being scolded for passing on our opinion of the service is not what we expected. We paid our bill and said thank you. I heard the host mubble something under his breath as we left. I imagine he must have said something rude but we didn't understand what he said. Probably a good thing as that might have escalated things in a very bad way. We didn't get the host's name but he was bald and looked like a thinner version of the actor, The Rock. read more

In Milan Central Station. More typical a caffè bar where you order/pay first and then stand at the bar and have whatever you are ordering. SUPER busy everyday since it's the crossroad spot for those traveling and going to work so you need your "Italian charm" and assertive polite where with all to have your caffe. All you need to say is "scusi" when your caffè is up and people make room for you. But use your voice, no whispering here :-) it is a given that everything is fresh and delicious... seconds? Caffe Panzera wasn't bad. My husband came I ate here while in Milano during our honeymoon. We just wanted a quick lunch before we got out and about in the city. I had a turkey and cheese sandwich with some salad. Believe it or night my sandwich was very simple but good. It was toasted and had mayo on it and that's it. My husband had lasagna, bread, and salad. He said the lasagna wasn't bad but not like his moms (side note: we LOVE his moms lasagna). The lasagna was a little bland but it was ok for a simple lunch. Panzera is the type of establishment that elicits very polar reactions: you hate something about it, you love something about it. For example I was not enthused by the €18 bill for a lunch made up of nizzarda salad (string beans, cherry tomatoes, boiled egg and tuna), cappuccino and water. Now, that's preposterous even in Milan. I did love the double-stacked sandwiches though, and to the moment I haven't found anything comparable around. The sandwiches are made of "pan brioche", which looks like a dome-shaped bread, but contains eggs in the dough and remains incredibly soft and velvety. It's a gourmet option, sliced to be served with different types of ingredients, with the "King salmon" option taking the cake. My personal recommendation: take a couple of those to go, you'll be presented with a classy box with your goodies conveniently sliced in half for sharing, or just to avoid nasty splodges on your shirt. I like to have an excuse not to share them... The sweets are good, the cappuccino a hit or miss, depending on who's maneuvering the milk foamer. The seating area is wide and convenient (there's an upper floor as well), but the moment you sit down, the prices balloon. They accept all credit cards, including Amex. Again, choose selectively and Panzera will be a pleasant experience, with not so much of a sticker shock. read more

My go-to place for a good cappuccino made the way only Italians know how. Perfectly in its taste and presentation and served with a complimentary butter cookie. But this place is more than just a café. It has an assortment of beautifully displayed desserts and pastries to make anyone drool. It also carries a display delicious Italian gelato. My favorite is the pistachio. Another section of this café is a sit down restaurant for those who want to have lunch or dinner...or both. There is a beautiful outside seating area as well for food perfect for enjoying the weather on those beautiful days. I cannot give my personal opinion on the restaurant section on the café but have heard from colleagues that the pizza is pretty good. Maybe one day I'll forgo my usual dinner spot and give this place a try. For now I will continue to stop in for my cappuccino and a sweet treat whenever I'm in the area read more

My sister spotted this place on way to dinner elsewhere and thought we should return to have coffee and pastry for dessert there. We did just that but were greeted by a rude waiter who also mocked my beverage order. All I did was provide my order, clearly, politely, and received this response. We had already selected pastries and other staff person brought them over but damage had been done. My sister noticed my change in mood so we made haste and departed. He didn't even say good bye, good night, thank you, or "Arrivederci". Two stars for the pastries, no more due to disgraceful service. read more

The service at this restaurant by our waitress was terrible. She rushed us to order, never checked in on us and failed to bring me a glass of wine when I asked, that is until we asked her colleague for our check and then she said " oh did you want that wine?" She never cracked a smile with us or any of the other patrons we observed her working with and almost lost a customer who could not read the menu by yelling at her that it was "too bad" again until another waiter came to help this woman and saved a customer from leaving due to her bad attitude. My husband and I had a few hours before our train was to leave, so we popped out of the train station to find some lunch. The staff here was not very friendly. Our waiter would hardly even let us look at the menu. He kept rushing us and asking questions like do you want a sandwich, do you want a pizza. Came across this place by accident while trying to find a place I have been before ( never found it). Since then been coming back here when I first arrive Milan due to its location by the hotel I stay and the train station. Typically I will have the Parma ham starter and spaghetti with clams. Then depending on the day may have a main course and had most items. All items are very good, good flavors and portions and sitting outside is a great way to soak in the hustle and bustle by the train station. Wait staff has always been good and they speak English and menus in English and for business travelers, an important note is they do take Visa and Master Card, no American Express. Caffe Panzera is conveniently located across from the Milan train station and offers outside seating, a upstairs tea room, a small section for eating any snacks bought from the glass sandwich case, coffee bar, or pastry section, or a restaurant area. The place is beautifully decorated in warm woods and has the typical Italian cafe feel. This place was very busy as it is a main stopping place for people to quickly sip a coffee at the bar before catching a train, or grabbing a bite in any of the previously named areas. This is not a place I would go to buy a full meal. I saw the meal options being served on plates, and it didn't appear to be anything special. This is definitely not meant to be a nice dinner option. It is a place to enjoy a cheap quick meal. My husband and I opted for pizza which we found is hard to find bad pizza in Milan. The pizza while not mind melting was good. I chose the pizza with sausage and saffron as I had never seen saffron on a pizza before. The pizza actually had a good flavor to it, and reminded me of the typical Milan dish of risotto and saffron. It was just the pizza version. What I found surprising about this place is that even though it was packed, the service was quick and friendly. At the end we enjoyed an espresso and were surprised by the quality of the coffee.
