This is a very traditional café and chocolate bar on the main Rambla in Vilanova, well worth a…read morevisit both for its chocolate (Xocolata in Catalan) and for its lovely 'Mordernista' Art Nouveau interior. Chocolate with 'churros' small, length of a doughnut-like pastry is a traditional Catalan way to start the day, and different cafes vie with each other to sell the best chocolate. The drinking chocolate here is hard to beat it's delicious, not too sweet, and so thick it is more of a dark chocolate custard than a drink. They also sell an extensive range of sweet and savoury pastries and salads here, making it a popular venue for a light lunch. As well as a large pavement seating area at the front, there is a series of interior rooms, including a lovely conservatory and a small, secluded rear garden, complete with a small grotto and pond, home to some friendly terrapins. The interior is a good example of the Catalan 'Modernista' movement, whose best known exponent is Gaudi. It's decorated with colourful art nouveau motifs, and the colourful, Moorish-influenced tiling associated with Spain.

I chose the English Breakfast one and it is a big breakfast. Imagine American Breakfast without hash browns but with baked beans and tomato slice. I just got the American the next time. Both were nothing special, just basic. Friends liked their cold cereal and fruit offerings. Service was off both times as the young servers didn't come by enough, forgot to bring requested items or even forgot orders. Food took forever to arrive, and not all at the same time. We were on holiday and really had nowhere to rush off to anyway.

Update: April 2009…read more The premises will be under new management from 1st May 2009, with a new menu. ***************** Café-bar and restaurant on the first floor of a former palacio, in the centre of Vilanova, well worth a look for its very impressive traditional décor, featuring elborate wall and ceiling paintings and mouldings. The building was the birthplace of Manuel de Cabanyes (1808-1833), the Romantic Catalan poet, who was an admirer of Lord Byron. Staff are friendly, and it hosts regular live music and cabaret (with cover charge). There's also a menu whichoffers a decent range of salads and main courses, with some pasta and risotto choices. The food is a little pricier than some other venues, but then you are paying for the surroundings! But they also do a three-course menu of the day for around EUR11, including bread, wine and dessert. Quality and service are good and the venue is perfect for a romantic meal. A two-course meal a la carte for two, with wine, is about EUR15-25 per person.
