Chipped paint and dusty pot-plants. I probably picked the wrong time of day to go too. 5pm, they were closing soon, and clearly the cake selection had been raided by more experienced cake-snafflers earlier. But, it was sunny upstairs and I got to sit by the window. Stareing wistfully out onto Bridlington town centre. I really want to be nice about the Secret Garden. The staff were friendly and the chocolate cake was good (made with fresh whipped cream mmmmm). The girl who made my coffee was smiley and kind of cute too ;-) But, I wouldn't go back, that coffee was awful.

The day we went, it was very busy but there was still some seating available. The choice of cake/pasteries was great. Just looking at them I wondered how many will I be able to eat in one go, they look that tasty! I plumped for the double chocolate cake in the end. It was lovely and moist, but most of all, it was tasty! There was even a profiterole on top covered in chocolate. The slices are a fair size too which personally are think are reasonably priced considering how nice they are. To be honest, the portions are just the right size. Once I finished mine, I was nicely full and couldn't have managed anything else (even if they did look lush). With my slice of cake, I had a pot of tea, which was enough to get three cups out of, which was a pleasant change. They use tea leaves which are contained in a compartment just under the lid. They do have a selection of sandwiches too (not just cakes!) and they also do an afternoon tea off for £25 (for 2 people) which includes some sandwiches/quiche, some patisseries and some scones. I'm assuming that you would also get a tea/coffee included in the price, although it was not mentioned in the menu. You can opt to take the sanwiches and cakes away if you like and avoid the paying the VAT. I would just like to say that if I put on loads of weight in the next few months, it is my mum's fault (who told me thay had opened one in Beverley) and I partly blame Matt F (Manchesters CM) for posting his review/photo, which made me want to pay them a visit there and then! :o)

Overall not a very good experience for the first day in our new home.

Whether you're a seasoned fisher or simply a person who enjoys fine views, we have it all here at Folly Lake Cafe. Risby fishing ponds were built 17 years ago on the ancient site of Risby hall and gardens. The hall was burnt to the ground in 1784 but the Folly remains on the bank of the lake which adopts its name. All the lakes are set in a tree lined undulating valley that once boasted one of the biggest deer parks in Yorkshire. The odd wild deer can still be seen by the die hard early rising fisherman.
