Our waiter was knowledgeable about the offerings and took the time to provide plenty of information for our choices. When the food came it hit all the right notes with great flavours and attention to detail by the kitchen staff such that the presentation far exceeded what one would expect from a pub atmosphere. If we return to Stow-on-the-Wold we would definitely head back to the Talbot

This was no exception, the 6X being outstanding here. Food was also excellent pub fare, with an outstanding steak pie with light, crips and fluffy pastry, peas and chips, as well as fish and chips. I've been dragged here several times over the years and it's really not my kind of place. The…read moreatmosphere is of a look-at-me yuppy meat-market. The drinks they stock are designed to be exhibited to fellow drinkers rather than actually drunk, and the continuous loop of runway fashion show footage on the TV screens just tops off the overall impression of empty-headed fatuousness. This time we actually ate here. A team of tech geeks. Of course, we didn't feel out of place because for all its atmosphere the Living Room doesn't seem to draw the crowd it targets any more, at least not on a weeknight. The menu is predominantly Italian-inspired but with a wide range of other influences including some British favourites. Unfortunately for the price you pay, the execution left something to be desired. The risotto I ordered was the wrong side of al dente, leaving me with crunchy mouthfuls of powdery rice. The treacle tart I ordered for desert was pretty much the same as the ones you can buy in any supermarket, except that they'd tried to stretch one of those to 12 portions. Being honest for a moment, I always get grumpy when I'm in Oxford and I end up in a pub that doesn't serve decent ales, so it may not be as bad as I make it sound. But there are certainly far better places to be and to eat.

Well, they also had some decent beers on tap, but the thing is that these decent beers pretty much end up being owned by the major breweries, but I have to say that I certainly preferred the fact that they did have these beers available on tap. As for the pub, yes, it definitely was quite a nice, and rather charming, pub to visit.

Thanks to its central location and tons of history, it seems like this pub has suffered at the hands of tourists like myself in recent years. The interior is smaller than other pubs I visited, but could be downright cozy if it weren't for the people coming in, looking around, and then leaving after taking a photo or two. (Maybe I just caught a tour bus day) They have 8-10 beers on tap, offer wine, and was told that the fish & chips are tip top, though we just had a few pints on our visit. Service at the bar was friendly and prompt, and we snagged one of the few tables available to sit and people watch. Overall White Horse is a fine small pub and well worth a visit if you love historic buildings/businesses. You can be the judge of the rest.

The girls behind the bar were smiling as they served, now that is a one off wherever you go or drink. We noticed an Asian group walk in and, obviously, unaccustomed to The British ways asked where they could sit. They were guided by the young lady behind the bar and then she took their order and waited on them. Now that is a lovely touch. Fantastic choice of 'never heard of' ales with exotic and quirky names. The whole décor of the place oozed FUN. The TV above the mantleshelf with its picture framing. The odd chairs and tables. We loved it and can't wait to go back for more.
