I'm not one for reviewing goods or services but this once I feel compelled to share our experience. We have visited Cafe Riva a couple of times before for a tea or coffee and had no cause to complain. These times however, we had not had cause to deal with the manageress. Our £7.25 breakfasts, (not including drinks) consisted of one sausage, two rashers of bacon, beans, toast and the meanest fried egg I've ever seen. This I would have grudgingly accepted since, as the other reviewer quite rightly observed, they think far too much of themselves. The beans though were stone cold on both plates. Again, I don't have a problem with this as the overworked school kid on minimum wages in the kitchen, I feel, is entitled to make the odd mistake. Our real grievance begins when the manageress appeared and rather than apologising and asking what she could do to rectify the problem, acted like a female Basil Fawlty minus the wit. She didn't believe us and refused to touch the beans herself. She then flatly refused to provide a refund and claimed that we'd eaten part of it anyway. From the lack of food on the plates to start with this would have been a reasonable assumption from anyone but her. I explained that it required a bite to find that the beans were cold in the first place. Eventually and without any form of apology, she reluctantly took the plates away to be replace. When the food returned there was hair in my partner's food. Since she hadn't bothered to bring the food out herself and being short of time at this point, we made the best of what was edible and cleared off. This sort of thing simply isn't good enough, especially considering the price they charge. Cafe Riva are trading on their location alone. It's a shame as it really is a nice spot but we would never dream of supporting her business again. This woman does not belong within the service industry. We visited 02/01/2012. read more
