Coffee arrived with a layer of milky foam I was frothing to drink it and it didn't let me down. Flavours were subtle and it went down smooth and easy. Food was a delicious umami delight. My order was the Madcowes Hash ($18), the large croquette was crispy, kasundi mushrooms meaty, egg soft and oozing offset nicely with crisp watercress. Looked good and tasted great .. olive oil was so fresh it was almost fluorescent green! Grab the bull by the horns and pop into this cafe when you're next in this small seaside town. Papers a plenty! I decided that, well, maybe it was enough. THANK GOD (or whatever I don't believe in) because I ended up here instead ! Decided to go healthy (that's impressive Pierre) and had the Mad Cowes chicken salad (as you could see in the pictures) and it was a freaking good as it looked awesome ! The seasonning was just perfect, the chicken was not dry at all, and... I HATE THE CUCUMBERS (ALL OF THEM) You don't know me, but it's a big deal, if I say to my friends that I ate cucumbers, they would die instantly. It's like Superman eating Kryptonite, or... Batman eating his dead parents ! Another earlier reviewer had mentioned the dryness of the bread and they were right. The bread needs to softened in another way as parts of it were tough to eat. The dish was unseasoned too. I had to ask for salt and pepper which wasn't available on any table. Absolutely beautiful bacon, and superbly cooked. Best bacon I've tasted for a while, with gorgeous crisp edges. It was the best part of the dish. The beans were over sweetened. Like seriously too too sweet. It was a shame as they otherwise had good flavour. It was also a tiny serve for $6. So, overall the meal was not quite there for me. Service was lovely throughout. It has the makings but overall this cafe can do better.

They have a small range of pastries from Johnny Ripe these include: Massive croissants which are delicious Rustic looking apple pies Doughnuts/cronuts And maybe something else They have a breakfast menu that I haven't tried. The cafe is small with about three tables and a bench in the front window. There are seats and tables outside. I'd love to give this cafe a 5 star review because they seem to be on the right track and their coffee is really good. I'm sticking to 4 star as they served me a ham and cheese croissant when I asked for a toasted croissant with jam, they apologized and served me a cold croissant, then apologized again and heated it up but it was still cold on the inside - delicious but cold. For a new cafe they are doing most things well, stocking good quality pastries and serving great coffee.

Blackbird Cafe is off the main drag down a laneway about halfway down Main St. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning and though it was busyish they were happy to accommodate a table for 6 without a reservation. Breakfast menu had all the usual faves plus a couple of great vego options for us so yay - Vegan Breakfast and Baked Eggs. Our friends had The Big Breakfast, Eggs Florentine and Avocado Smash. Also each coffee comes out with a itty bitty piece of cake on the side - too cute! The Big Breakfast definitely lived up to its name - huge!
