'ello 'ello! What's this hidin' down a side street? I was alerted of this place by my friend Kit who I met there today to discuss a photo shoot.
I'm a bit of a jitterbug after a coffee so I pass on one of those. I'm hungry though. Independent cafe food in Kings Heath can tend to go one of two predictable ways: Either cheap ingredients go to make food at an affordable price, or buzz words like 'local', 'free-range', and 'organic' hike the price up and aren't always a guarantee that you'll get good for your money.
Cafe Caffe make everything on their premises, (apart from the chips), but they don't harp on about it. Instead they have a casual attitude of agreement with the customer that of course this is what is expected and its how things should be and so they will be.
Flame me! What's this on the menu? Crispy Pancakes? The grandaddy of all ready meals! Surely this place isn't funded by Findus? Gladly, no. These large packages with classic fillings are made right here, at the size that you wished that they'd always been. They strike a balance between pie and pastie with the gratifying crunch and comfort of a fried chip-shop product.
What's for dessert? Look at the skies right now, (we're in mid-June 2012), and you'll wonder what season we are in. The luscious Summer Pudding from this establishment will make your tummy sunny, even if the weather is doing its best to make you think that this blanket of rain will last until 2015. If you are reading this review at another time, I'm sure there are some seasonal delicacies on a par with this one. read more
