My husband (a Berwick native) and I spent a day on Holy Island two years ago, and got a hankering for a snack. We wandered around and thought this place looked friendly enough. To get to the cafe entrance you go through the back garden where there is a small patio with a few tables. The coffee counter is quite literally in the back of someone's kitchen and they had a wonderful assortment of baked goods.
And then I saw it....one slice left of apple pie. I am not sure if the pie just looked that good or it was something more...but I knew that would be a good pie. It was obviously homemade and I had fantasies of a wee grandma slaving away in her kitchen using a recipe her wee grandma had handed down to her.
I ordered the last slice of the apple pie, sat down and tucked in...and I am not kidding when I say it was the best slice of apple pie in my life, if not the best thing I've ever eaten. I spent the next several minutes in pure epicurian euphoria.
I'm sure the tea and coffee was nice but that slice of apple pie was unforgettable. read more
