We tried this place out because it's a local spot and I'm glad we went for the experience, but I would never eat there again. It is cheap food and you get what you pay for in terms of the quality. I ordered something like a bento that had a variety of different meats, rice, and cabbage. We were looking for something quick that we could take on the road and it served it's purpose, but next time we'll go elsewhere. read more

Great place to get local kine food. you can get any kine loco moco which is what they're known for. they have other kine plates if you want like terry burgers etc. I've been here numerous times because the food is ono and services has always been great. Even when busy they're pretty quick. This is one of those old time local places that you must stop at on your stay/visit to Hilo. Café 100 is a beacon of Hilo's old diner-scene. A dim beacon, perhaps, but one, if the line of patrons we saw was representative, whose light will never completely fade out. There's not much to Café 100. It looks like a boardwalk diner that was pushed inland a couple miles by the two tsunamis that hit Hilo last century. And the prices are so low that they seem to have come from the same era. This alone may explain the popularity of the place; however, as other Internet reviews attest, over the years many locals have clearly developed a fierce loyalty to Café 100's menu, which is not for the weak of heart (medically speaking, that is). Before I go on, understand that I love big, hearty breakfasts as much as anyone. But I also try not to throw my health out the window when I eat. My wife made me come here. She was gung-ho on loco moco, the prospect of which--the name, after all, means "crazy mucous" in Spanish--scared the hell out of me. The reason I went along was because of Cafe 100's history. It's been around since 1946 and, as I said above, survived two tsunamis. What's more, many people support its claim as the creator of loco moco, a signature Island dish. Besides, how many times do I get to the Big Island? Not often enough, unfortunately. As expected, my wife ordered the classic loco moco--rice, a hamburger patty drowned in gravy, and a fried egg on top--for $1.99. She ooh-ed and aah-ed over the first bite or two, but it quickly became too much for her. Lending her my support, I nibbled on her order a little, but I suddenly flashed back thirty years to the hamburger lunches I sometimes ordered at my elementary school cafeteria, which I suspect sickened every student at least once. Swallowing down my soft, mushy forkful, I wished my wife good luck finishing her meal. With my fingers on her wrist to test her pulse as she ate, I went back to my own breakfast, an English muffin that hugged a huge, thin slice of ham, fried egg, and slice of American cheese, and quickly lost myself in its greasy goodness. I could have easily eaten two. I probably ought to add that Café 100's coffee was insanely cheap, too...and tasted like it. If your taste buds are shot, it's a great deal. Even if you're not a fan of loco moco--and many people are--for $1.99 you really can't complain. If nothing else, you can eat around the hamburger, then take it home, wash it off, set it aside with a bun, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, a slice of pineapple, and whatever condiments you like, and eat it later. Two meals for $1.99? For me, that's what would make me come back for loco moco. I'm sure Café 100 diehards would love to punch me in the face for saying these things, but maybe they'll take solace in the fact that I loved virtually everything else I ate on the Big Island. Cafe 100 does have a fairly wide-ranging menu, and customers can order various mixed plate lunches that come with generous portions and sides of macaroni or potato salad, one or two scoops of rice, and even kim chee. If you really want to try loco moco, I might recommend other places. Although it's a signature Island dish, there's a lot of variety in loco moco recipes, and if you're hungry, there's sure to be one to satisfy you. read more

After driving by a few times and deciding to keep driving, I finally broke down and took the old lady to experience cafe 100. Her fried chicken was grey and cold my food was ok but I don't think we will be back. There are much better drive-ins in Hilo. read more

My sister was excited to come to eat here again while visiting from NC. I told her the Ricky Boy sandwich still tastes the same which it did. That was great. But the fries were stale and I ordered a lilikoi juice like I always do and it was warm! Who wants to drink warm juice? This place has a steady flow of people the whole time we were there which was around 1:30. This service was fast even with all the people. We ordered the mix plate and the super loco. The mix plate had a teriyaki stew and chicken along with rice and mac salad. My wife liked the stew but wasn't crazy about the chicken. I enjoyed the super loco which was rice topped with a burger, topped with gravy, then an egg. With a side of Mac salad, spam, and Portuguese sausage. It was good, heavy, but good. We had enough leftover for super. It is worth going to but we will probably try other place before going back. O, we also ordered he peach-pineapple turnover for 2.69. For that price I expected fresh ingredients, the fruit had to be canned, but the crust was good, but wouldn't ever order it again. My family eats here at least once a week. Our favorite is the Salmon Loco which is only served on Fridays. Best value in Hilo, for a family of 4 our bill is never over $25. And they're friendly, most of the cashiers know my kids' names. My kids are always excited to go to Cafe 100, and it's better than that "Scottish Clown" fast food chain. read more

Lets see..... 1st time here so I will base my opinion on other similar window order restaurants.... the burger was good and cheap but Vernas III was much better. My wife had the Hapa Plate which came with Teri- beef, battered salmon, brown rice and Mac salad. Blaine's Drive Inn on Waianuenue was much better Teri-beef. The salmon, with its distinct flavor, needed something else then tartar sauce. The brown rice was amazing and the Mac salad was so so. The strawberry shake was equivalent to MCDs. Cafe 100 is a definite must for any trip to the Big Island. Where else can you go when its time for breakfast? Any place on the entire Island makes it less than an 1 hour and half from the birthplace of the world famous Loco Moco except maybe Captain Cook. There are several dozen different kind of Loco Moco and all of them are suitable for sharing unless you're a really BIG Boy with a BIG appetite. (Even the mac-potato salad is ono.) But, once a week for the humongous Super or Kilauea Loco Moco is plenty. I ate it all but I was feeling stuffed for a few days. If Loco Moco was born in 1949, it's as old as me. read more

Lucky for me, i love it... the food is great. the atmosphere isn't that great, but you stop paying attention to the buzzing flies because the food is so good! the price is excellent and they've got loco moco over anything you can imagine. Fun, cheap, local spot for those visiting Hilo. Their prices are unbeatable. Hubby got the Hilo Boy -- Beef, fried chicken, rice, macaroni salad. I got the Chili Loco - chili, rice, and an egg. Both were SO good and totally hit the spot after a long day of hiking. This place is all outdoors which gives it a great feel and isn't touristy at all, which we liked. Honestly cannot freaking believe ANY of the good reviews for this place. I guess we had high expectations for good local kine food in Hilo and this place has had a great reputation for 70 years. My friend and I found the food absolutely inedible. The Korean chicken wings were so soggy and fatty. The loco moco and hamburger steak plates had obviously frozen meat. Even the Mac salad was just blah. The "tossed salad" I ordered had rotten iceberg lettuce. I literally could not believe how bad it was, especially seeing how busy they were and how people were lined up. we left there hungry, mad and feeling so ripped off. As a Big Island newbie I was intrigued by the volume of business this place did at lunchtime. Had to find out myself. They have a wide selection on the menu and it a Step Up To the Counter and Place Your Order kinda joint. And slammin' busy or after the rush, this place cranks out the grub. I went with the standard, which with its brown gravy took me back to my childhood days. Hubby went with the kilauea (chili, 2 eggs, smokeys, spam all over rice) and devoured it! The food we ordered was good (mostly). The problem was the food that we got that we didn't order. We ventured over to the Hilo side of the Island to see Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls, and whatever else we saw on the drive to and from Kona. In Hilo, we decided to get a taste of the local fare and found Cafe 100 via Yelp!. We ordered up my teriyaki beef Moco Loco and her grilled Ahi over white rice. As I completed my order, I saw, hand written on a dry-erase board: "Turnovers Pineapple Peach" next to a turnover warmer with a bunch of crusty-goodness inside. I ordered up a pineapple turnover for dessert. I specifically said, "Oh, add one of those pineapple turnovers too, please." (This is important later). The staff is friendly enough, but not terribly fast, which is fine; it's Hawaii-why would anyone want to move fast when it's perpetually 82 and sunny? I'm a-ok with living a laid back lifestyle. I mention the speed due to issues later. My Loco Moco was very tasty. How can it not be when you throw teriyaki beef with extra sauce over rice then throw a fried egg on top? The only way to make it better is to wrap the whole thing in bacon, which I'm pretty sure you can do at Cafe 100. My wife ordered grilled Ahi with white rice... and got deep fried Ahi with brown rice. Yes, we could have brought it back but we didn't feel like waiting to have them re-make it (refer back to them not being terribly speedy) so we sat down to eat. Mine was good. Hers was gross. I like fried fish. Heck, I like fried just-about-anything. This fried Ahi was tasteless, dry, and completely underwhelming. After our 50% success with the main course, we thought we'd return to a positive experience by splitting a pineapple turnover... something I don't think we can get fresh on the mainland. What we found when we broke it open was that all of the turnovers were pineapple-peach. And by pineapple-peach I mean a few little chunks of pineapple desperately clinging to the inside wall of the turnover while several (looked like canned) peach quarters dominated the inside of the turnover. The crust was really thick, dry, about as tasteless as the Ahi, and I could barely taste the pineapple. So, taste aside, as that is subjective, here are my reasons for the 2-stars: 1: Get the orders right. I understand that mistakes happen; we're human. However, botching two parts (white/brown rice and grilled/fried Ahi) of the same order is not ok. To the same point, if you're going to offer grilled or fried options, when someone orders it grilled, chances are that they either don't like fried stuff or are trying to be health-conscious (I realize the ridiculousness of this statement while writing a review of a Moco Loco place...). Either way, fried or grilled is a big difference; either don't offer two options of the same food, or get it right. 2: When someone orders something that isn't even offered (Pineapple turnover), take a second to correct them; don't just throw in the closest thing you've got and send them on their way. The sign for the turnovers led me to believe that there was a choice of pineapple or peach. I asked for one option. The lady at the counter should have corrected me and told me that they were all pineapple-peach. I would have been $2.49 richer and Cafe 100 might have gotten a better rating. read more

On my trip to Hilo between Oct. 5-10, I managed to patronize Cafe 100 twice. On the 5th, I needed to pick up dinner and selected a new item, Korean-style pork steak, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It's neither teriyaki pork, nor Korean spicy pork, as they don't use the pork butt (shoulder pork). It's not fatty or gristly, but is lean like a steamship round of beef. The potato-mac salad was well-seasoned and extremely tasty. It is not a regular menu item at this point, but should be as they don't offer teriyaki pork on a regular basis. I drove there after noon on Saturday, 10/08, and found the parking lot jammed with cars and long lines. I found out that Cafe was celebrating their 65th anniversary (it was founded in 1946, a year after the end of World War II) and the promotion featured four items for $0.65 each: hot dogs; 16 oz. soft drinks; goodie-goodie (guri-guri); and loco mocos. Since I had to stand in line, I went for the limit of FIVE loco-mocos. Took them back for my sister and her family - I think that my nephew, a growing lad, had the extra one.. It seems that they've gone back to making their own hamburger patties, getting away from the frozen HB they had been using the past decade when they tasted so instituional like the stuff from McD's. It's a great improvement back to how they were when I was in high school. That's a big jump from 2-1/2 STARS to a solid 4 STARS! Welcome back, Cafe 100. Now, if they would only open again on Sundays! BTW, their hamburger steak plate lunch is only $4.95, with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. read more

Went here with my mom and we got grilled mahi with miso sauce. It was delicious, but then anything with miso sauce will probably taste delicious anyway. The portions were generously sized, too. We asked for brown rice and tossed salad instead of mac. The rice was a little on the dry side. At first I was annoyed that the dressing was already on the salad and that there was so much cabbage in the salad, but then I took a bite and was surprised at how tasty it was.
