Café Schafer is a great café/bakery in Triberg, Germany. It is in the middle of the beautiful Black Forrest. It is said that the Black Forrest cake was invented by the current baker's father. We decided we had to go and try the infamous cake, especially in the Black Forrest. When we entered we noticed this was a small, idyllically decorated bakery with about 1215 tables in the back of the café. You come in and order what you want, then go sit down and they serve you. We ordered two pieces of cake, one of the Black Forrest and the other was a cranberry cake. Both were very moist and flavorful, but I definitely saw why the Black Forrest cake was so famous. The cake itself was light and flavorful. The cream was soft and airy. The cherries were real, tasty cherries. The cake had been soaked in lacquer that was a tad heavy but was a delightful surprise. I honestly didn't mind it but should have ordered a coffee to go along with it. The café does not rush you out. You are welcome to linger, talk and enjoy yourself. I found this very common in Europe but I really did like this café. I would absolutely return. And I will now never be able to eat Black Forrest Cake in the US again! read more

Before going to Europe I did a search for authentic Black Forrest Cake. I came up with information that the creator of this cake's son now makes the cake at this cafe. When our trip plans were being finalized and we decided to visit Triberg we knew we had to stop into the cafe and try this famous cake. After walking around the waterfalls my sister and I walked down to the cafe. We ordered the Black Forrest cake and also cranberry cake to share. We placed our order at the front of the cafe and then were seated. We were asked about drink and asked about iced tea, they didn't have that so we opted for water. Meanwhile everyone else was ordering coffee. We received our slices of cake a few minutes later and we dug into them. The Black Forrest cake was very good but wow, the taste of the schnapps. It was very overwhelming and I now see why everyone was ordering coffee. You need it to cut through the schnapps. Other than the very strong taste of liquor it was very good. The cake was a very light sponge that was tasty. The cranberry cake was better than I had expected and ended up being my favorite cake. The flavors were nicely balanced and the cream and cake were wonderful. if I ever come back to Triberg I would definitely stop at this cafe again to eat some cake. read more

Home of the Black Forest cake as well an amazing traditional German café in the middle of one of the most touristic towns in Black Forest. Beware though - you need to have cash; this place is cash-only. Also lunch and/or dinner after a piece of cake is optional - they are extremely rich and will keep you full for a long time. My girlfriend and I went there to try the black forest cake in the actual Black Forest, given that it was where it was invented. We were not disappointed - we got two giant pieces of delicious cakes, with coffee and hot chocolate. Both of them were absolutely amazing, especially the black forest cake (duh). This is THE place for the original recipe Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte). Invented by Josef Keller, he passed on the recipe to his apprentice, August Schäfer. His son, Claus Schäfer is the current head chef or Cafe Schäfer. Each bite packs a kick of kirch liquor, some more than others. Came here to try the original Black Forest cake. The alcohol taste was quite strong and personally I'm not a big fan of alcohol. Also the whipped cream was really heavy so me and my friend left out half of the cream. I liked the cherry cake with strawberry flavored cream more. The Café Schaefer is supposedly the only place to have the original, authentic black forest cake (Schwarzwaelder Kirsch). The recipe was passed down from Josef Keller to his apprentice, August Schaefer...and the recipe has stayed in the Schaefer family every since. Now, this is not the sickling sweet black forest cake that I'm used to in the US. More of a dry, German chocolate cake with some mascerated cherries and a whipped cream that was very highly laced with kirsch. Add some chocolate shavings and I thought it was pretty good. My husband didn't like it, but he enjoyed his slice of cappuccino cake. It was just shy of 6 euros for two pieces of cake, plus I spent a few more euros to pick up a small box (maybe 5 or 6) black forest cherries. The staff was friendly enough. It was probably 3 in the afternoon and there were several tables filled...some tourists just having cake, and other folks having a very late lunch. I think it's one of those "when in Rome" things. See the waterfall, eat your piece of cake & oogle some kukoo clocks and your tourist list for Triberg is complete. Just make sure you eat your cake here so that you've eaten the "real" one. read more

We stopped in to have the famous Black Forrest Cake ORIGINAL recipe. The shop was very cute and quaint and is run by the original owners, including the mastermind behind the recipe. We actually saw him there refilling the display case. Besides the Black Forrest Cake, there are several other types of regional German treats and an abundance of truffles on the back wall. I wish I had tried the truffles while I was there. Anyhow, the cake itself was very interesting, and something I would recommend to try as an "experience". It is not the super sweet version many Americans are used to. I have been living in Germany for awhile now, and have found that Germans don't really sweeten up their desserts unless they are using jam or icing, like on pastries. I would recommend trying something different if you do not want your cake LOADED with cherry liquor. I mean loaded. Every bite was like taking a shot of liquor, but I would definitely recommend it for the experience, and to able to say that you've tried the OG recipe! read more

Decor is very dated. Reminds me of going to grandmas house during Christmas. Came for the infamous Black Forest cake. My wife and I couldn't finish it. It was over powering in the liquor flavor and makes me feel like I'll get a buzz if I eat it all. Our friend got the chocolate cream which was rather good.
