An unfortunate racist encounter at the Links Pro Shop
This review is only about the Cabot Links Pro Shop. We played golf (Cliffs) and dined at Cabot Bar and the Pub - all wonderful experiences and the staff were fantastic (5 stars).
However, had an unreal experience at the Links golf shop just now! There was an older woman with short hair working there who was clearly following me with her eyes while I was looking around. When I went up to the register to pay, I asked her where was the Pub b/c I was looking to grab lunch there. She didn't know.
Then she rang me up my purchase and asked if I worked there. When I said "no, my husband is playing a round of golf", she said, surprisedly, "Oh?" I paused to take in what just happened. Awkward silence ensues. Wow, lady. Also, if I worked here would I ask you where is the pub? Anyway, fine. I try to brush it off. Maybe the only Asians she's known are those working on premise, and she cannot fathom Asians coming to play golf in 2019?
Then, as I head out, she tries "to be helpful" and points out the Pub on the hill. She then also adds that one can eat at the Panorama and the Cabot Bar - making it a point to say, "the one upstairs is expensive". Oh, good lord. Would she say the same thing to me if I were white, I wonder? Or a man? The kicker is that when I was at lunch, I noticed she charged me for "Cabot" water that they give out for free at the Lounge and that's not even for sale at the golf shop. I went back to get a refund.
I'm just so outraged, because I thought that Canadians were pretty diverse and good people. Not going to let her spoil my stay, but heads-up, this "Mary H" (name on the receipt) should take some diversity and inclusion / dignity at work training real pronto, especially as Cabot Links tries to attract more visitors from around the world. I assure you that people of all different races and ethnicities play golf and stay at golf resorts. read more
