The service was not anything like what my wife and myself had experienced in the past. The problem we had was 2-fold. One was the dock boy services that were a huge letdown compared to the precedent that was set in prior years. The resort somehow lost about 1/3rd of the fish that we brought in to be cleaned! For example we would bring in 20 fish, but only had 15 returned to us. Where did they go? One time one of the dock boys forgot to clean our fish at all! Supposedly they later cleaned the fish that were still alive, but I did not receive any of the fish. On 2 or 3 occasions, they forgot to return our landing net to the boat. There is more I could list, but you get the gist of it. The other issue I have is management's reaction to the problem. They said they were sorry, but there was nothing they could do. All we got were excuses. The manager told me the big thing that the Life of Resort has over other resorts is the services they provide. Well, on this occasion, he admitted, they fell short on those services. The bottom line is that the cost at being at the resort this year did not match the services that were supposed to be rendered. I told the manager I would be reviewing them, but I would give them time to respond. An apology is all well and good, but as a business owner myself, I would have dealt with an issue like this in a much different way. By truly fixing issues with customers, you can gain loyal customers for life! It feels like it is all about the money and they got that from me. I told the manager we would not return in the future and apparently they are ok with this. In the past, I would give this resort 5 out of 5 stars. This year's experience at the resort, I only give them a 2 out of 5 stars.

John and Kristi were gracious hosts and were always there to help us. This resort is on the shores of the Ash River which empties into Sullivan Bay and into Voyageurs National Park. Best fishing in the WORLD! We stayed in their campgrounds, the only "full service" campground on Ash River Trail which includes Full 50 amp electric, water and sewer. The location is fantastic, just at the very edge of the Park, it is actually closer to the boundary than the place that rents houseboats. Two minutes down the river and you are inside the Park, on Sullivan Bay, a branch of lake Kabetogama. The bay is connected by a narrows to the East end of this lake, and you can go West to Kabetogama, East to Namakan, Northeast to Kettle falls... Or, on a bad day for boating, you can walk five minutes to where the Park's walking trails begin. All cabins have a view of the river. Ours had two bedrooms, a large living-dining-kitchen combination and a screened porch, where we actually ate breakfast and dinner. It has heat, which we did not need (early August) . No AC, but one would never need it up there. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the promised equipment and utensils were there. The boats were reliable and in good condition. The atmosphere is out of another time: you make your reservation by talking to John on the phone. You give your first name and that's it: no deposit. You get there and tell him you have arrived. No keys needed. When you leave you can pay by personal check, no need to show ID! Everybody is there because of the park, and it is very quiet at all times. Mostly families, two or three generations. John is a reliable weather predictor and will also tell you where the fish are biting. The cabins are obviously been worked on all the time, in this severe climate. In our cabin the knotty pine panels were just new (door hanging not quite adjusted yet). There was a CRT TV (really) which we did not use: too much to see outside. If you want luxury, this place is not for you. If you want down-home old fashioned comfort, go there and you will love it.

UPDATE - November 10, 2020:…read more We have stayed at VPL many times (5 years, total). Last time, we also brought along my brother and his wife. They stayed at Spruce Tree cabin; we were in Cattails. We've also stayed in Loggers. We've inspected many other cabins. All are nice. 1. Secluded: IMHO, VPL is one of "the most" secluded lodges in the Northwoods (and Southern Canada); it is *easily accessible* via drive-in. I've stayed at many; "visited" a few others; seen "many more" from the water. VPL truly does encompass the whole peninsula. To get anything more secluded, you have to shell out BIG bucks for a fly-in excursion (which I have done, many times). This is *the place*. 2. Hosts / Managers: Casey and Anna - "Top-tier". I've stayed in many lodges in both the USA and Canada - there are "top-tier" hosts, and then there are "the rest". Definitely, "top-tier". 3. Amenities: They are accurately listed on the web-site - check them out. Great boat-ramp; playground; boat-house / fish-cleaning / live-bait / fuel; excellent docks for each cabin (or community docks for the "view" cabins); etc, etc... 4. Kitchen: it's small, but perfect for a week-long stay. Even though there are plenty of restaurants within easy driving distance, we ONLY eat-in during our stay. We use the kitchen and the grill (provided by VPL at each cabin) - it's fish-camp! Awesome. 5. Cabins - Part 1: Traditional, but very comfortable. Rustic - but, cozy. Some are very close to the water - with individual docks; some are "view cabins" - located high-up (you can't walk straight down to the water - need to use the community dock). We prefer the "water-side" cabins - everything is close at hand. Also, brother's family has stayed at one of the "view" cabins: truly stunning views - facing across the bay (to uninhabited Echo Island). And these "view" cabins have AWESOME fire-pits & benches for tremendous evenings. All the cabins DO have everything you need for a week-long stay. 6. Cabins - Part 2: There is a selection of both Single-room and Multi-room cabins. All have *new* mattresses: Single, Double, and King - depending on the specific cabin. No locks on the doors? It's fish-camp! Don't bring your heirloom jewelry; if you do, lock it in your car-trunk. 7. Firewood: Obviously. 8. No TV: Hooray! There are video players in each cabin - and videos at the office. Seriously? Who goes to fish-camp in the Northwoods to watch videos? Not... 9. Lake Kabetogama: If you've never been here, this lake is an AWESOME place to spend a week. Even if you don't stay at VPL, this is one place which should be on everyone's bucket-list.

The cabins are small, but private. From most of the cabins you can see no other cabins or one other cabin. There is a small beach and a playground where our kids play. It's not a luxury resort, nor is it advertised as such, but my family has a great time when we are there.
