excellent teachers. very happy with the special education program especially - district itself is mediocre in terms of parent involvement and contact, but the mcclatchy staff, admin & teachers are absolutely excellent, especially some of the vice principals (valdes, sharma). they actually care, keep an eye out for students who can't advocate for themselves. physical plant is better than average (great cleaning/maintenance staff); the theater itself is fantastic, and the music program first rate (mr. munoz). very happy with PE/sports options as well, incl. xc/track coach (watkins). overall a much better experience for my kid(s) than i thought it would be. read more

Upon arrival we saw all the cars in the back parking lot. There was still plenty of parking. Good thing there was a sign that said gym to help us make our way there. The gym is very old school. Pendants line the walls. Pictures of the cheer leader hang over some of the pendants. Sponsor banners are also hanging. The bleachers are comfortable and don't wobble. The ground (steps to the bleachers and bleacher area) is all well worn cement. read more

My eldest is graduating tomorrow. I am confident this is a good school. While the district may be a bit sketchy, and some teachers will have flaws, the over arching reflection of the last 4 years has been good, for me as a parent, and pretty wonderful for my daughter, an athlete and a strong student. 1) we are not wealthy, the school is in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods. I feel this needs to be said because it is one of the few "urban" high schools around, and because your middle income high schooler will suddenly be hobnobbing with people with more money than you will make in your whole career, but kids are kids. 2) our daughter was heavily involved in sports and was in the Visual and Performing Arts program for all 4 years, even during COVID years. 3) If you have a problem getting into the class you want, speak directly to the teacher. My kid took three years of Spanish because she didn't get placed into German. Her Spanish 3 teacher was questionable, but her other teachers were wonderful. Math 2 she got in to freshman year after a bit of an argument over her placement in Math 1, but only because the counselor said there was no room in Math 2+, and she had the most wonderful math teacher for Math 2, they were excellent. Her follow up years of math (all 4 years) were also wonderful. She took regular bio her first year because they did not put her in molecular bio and her counselor was not helpful (she did not have a good counselor those first two years. The other counselors she has had have been great, for the record.) 4) There have been some students with issues that affected my kid once in awhile, but there are kids and parents with mental health and SUD issues in every school. It is hard to complain about when it's a fact of life. When people get treatment, they get better, but those folks who fly under the radar are really problematic. Teach your kid to recognize them for what they are and to not be too disappointed. Humans have foibles, your kid can rise above the bad news other people bring into their lives. Yes, my kid had some weird interactions with adults and kids. Yes, she has some insecurities that we worked on to build her up. Yes, I think a lot of stuff is still around jealousy and other insecurities other people have. Yes, I am a confident and outspoken parent and will protect my child. I had to do that with a sport, I had to do that with Spanish, and recently, I had to do that with a grad night pick up that went awry (I filed a police report on that last one.) Do I think this is outrageous? Yes, for the individual events. But if your kid has nothing happen to them to challenge them during their years of High School, and to have them come out feeling supported and getting ahead, what are they equipped for later when life throws a series of challenges at them, sometimes all at once? Who do they go to for help or support? Who do they turn to? things I have learned as a parent: the school cannot assist you if you don't let them know there is an issue. The teachers tend to be really accommodating. I have read/seen a lot of comments that they are not very helpful, and this has NOT been my experience or my kid's experience, minus one or two flawed individuals out of the many, many teachers who are working hard at CKM. Now, here are my opinions on their programs: -VAPA is a great art, performance program. It is fabulous. Highly recommend! -HISP is a very intense program and many kids drop out, however, if your child needs to be challenged and enjoys doing a LOT of homework, this is your landing spot for humanities/history/english. Lots of opportunities to really learn deep dives. That said, my child opted for VAPA only (kids can do both) and to take AP classes and honors classes because of the boost in GPA as well as because she was heavily involved in sports. As a parent, I actually preferred this over the feeling that my kid was in HISP, and she probably would have been fine. However, they do not get extra GPA from HISP classes. To me, all the work is not worth it unless they weight it. -The Law and Public Policy program is not well known, and it is WONDERFUL. It is an option for "getting in" to CKM if you are outside of the school zone. I hope my second daughter does this program. -I really enjoyed the Athletic program as a volunteer parent and driver. The Athletic Director is very involved, and the coaches have been wonderful and supportive. So overall? I give this lovely school a 4.0 Where could they improve? Maybe the parking lot. They have been very supportive of the kids and parents, the school feels fairly welcoming when you walk into the front, but it is a little cold, there are security guards and a long hallway. But I think that may just be the day and age we are in. The current Principal, Andrea Egan, is truly a good person and tries to accomplish a lot with very little time. Do your internship elsewhere. The "preceptor" they gave me never wanted to go to work, and would text us interns to just have the custodian unlock the door for us, and to "hold down the fort." He made us be the receptionists, and it made it difficult to actually do any work on our caseloads, which were usually 18 clients (high school students); although our field instructor (without counting) would tell us it's 9. They don't handle the work themselves, they put it off onto interns without teaching them anything first. They would make you feel terrible about asking to have supervision, which they're supposed to provide whether we ask or not. It was so toxic. In the end, they did exactly what you'd expect dysfunctional people with poor ethics to do to any interns who dared to tell the truth about them. read more

The school itself is great, my daughter attended and graduated last year with a great GPA. A lot of the teachers are great, then you have the hand full who only arrive for the paycheck and never email you back or update the grading website. However, the huge problem at the school is the administration, Mr Lambert, Dr Godina and Mr Guevara. They are so involved with chasing down parents who dont care that they make it difficult for parents who DO care, to advocate for their childs education!! They have their 'favorites' and everyone else should fen for themselves?! I have 2 children and I have had amazing experiences with staff at their elementary and they Jr high, Sutter Middle school. I never dealt with an administration who really has no connection with their students, like this one. I am appalled by their lack of compassion and professionalism. I am so glad that my daughter has already graduated and I no longer have to deal with these people and send my child through the doors of this school knowing that I am putting her in the hands of this administration. I refused to send my younger son there. He is now at Christian Brothers where the staff and administration actually 'care' about the success of their students...every student, not 'favorites.' read more

The school is renowned for its academic excellence as well as the amount of famous alumnae it produces over the years. It is a very prestigious school, both in the ranks and in the streets. I have once attended this marvelous school. My family often saw it as a high-ranking school with prestige because of its age, as well as its look from the front view. The reason why I give this school 3-stars is because of the high school experience. McClatchy is small in terms of size and was never meant to be made to contain over 3,000 students. Compared to schools like John F. Kennedy or Hiram Johnson, which are standard-sized American high schools, the true high school experience is never reached in McClatchy. There is no way McClatchy can change their high school design, because of the age, as well as the planning the school was developed. The pride in McClatchy is also slowly diminishing. The school used to offer a fire science program in which helped the recruitment for firefighting occupations. It used to offer a class in car mechanics. And lastly, a lot of the vocational classes in CKM had been either cut or no longer exists. Nevertheless, CKM is a good school, I wish it could've been better for me. read more

Great school! I will be graduating in 2016. For my four years I've been in the HISP program. I absolutely love the school. There is over 40 clubs where students can find something they are interested in. In addition, the school offers various academic programs: HISP, AFJROTC, Criminal Justice, Law and Public Policy. Mcclatchy offers a number of different services that allow students to get the help and information they may need. Most of the teacher are quite helpful and many have had interesting jobs before choosing to teach, which allows them to have greater wisdom that they may share with the students. In my 4 years, I've made multiple friendships and connections that will be useful in my life. At this point I feel as if I am prepared to go off to college and start the rest of my life. I've made multiple different contacts and references that will be handy in one way or another. This high school is by far one of the best schools in the district, if not the best. It offers clubs, extracurricular activities, sports, AP Classes and electives that really help one find themselves and be able to excel. The environment on campus is so joyful and full of spirit. Plus, they have their own aspects that make the school unique. I can't imagine my high school experience being any better than what it's been. Go Lions! read more

I went to Monterey Trail and played volleyball for all four years, all of my experiences were pretty decent up until last year when some of my teammates and I were walking through their school to get to the front (because we didn't know any other way plus they were already dismissed) and we were suddenly stopped by one of their security guards. We explained to her that we were from another school and we were just making our way to the front, but she proceeded to tell us to go another way (which wouldn't have been a problem if she actually told us another way to go) instead she proceeded to tell us that we "don't belong here" and escorted us to a side door where we didn't even know went to. I didn't catch her name, but for someone who didn't know who we were, you'd expect her to be kind and welcoming but she was the complete opposite. she definitely does not have a lick of patience for children. read more

This school is a joke. The administration is terrible at handling bullying situations. Our child was bullied for nearly 3 months and they did nothing until the final week of school. The student support center staff are AMAZING! There are a handful of other teacher that are also pretty great. However, my husband and I both talked to all of the administrators. Zero tolerance? Yeah right. Unfortunately the lack of consequences will do these kids no favors in the long run. There is a reason it is deemed one of the worst schools in SCUSD. They take reports of what happened and then just say, "Well, we will keep an extra eye out." Yet the bullying still happens within feet of them. Not just 1 on 1. We are talking 10 on 1 bullying. Ridiculous. If you have the opportunity to send your child elsewhere, do it. This school isn't worth the frustrations. read more

Well here it is a couple of years later and said freshman is now almost half way through her junior year. So far, we have been pleased with the responsiveness of teachers via email and of course our daughter's experiences with the band program. With the exception of one bad experience with a surly campus monitor who had worked a football game and obviously has issues of his own, we have had no issues with the campus or administration so far. Even in this situation, we received prompt response about our concerns from both the administration and the band program teacher. read more

The teachers are unhelpful, the counselors are useless, and the Vice Principals are rude. The campus is falling apart and the janitors do nothing about it. I cannot tell you how many times my classes have been disrupted because of the staff and, when I try to resolve it, they do jack about it. No one cares about a single one of us. They don't care if we walk out the front door, get hit by a bus, and die. Worst part is, they PRETEND like they care. The curriculum is broken beyond belief and I'm placed in classes I abhor. The students I am in these classes with are not on the same mental focus I am on, so I am stuck with a bunch of kids I hate and I therefore cannot concentrate. When I try to say something to the counselor, I am shut down immediately. They put us down because we are minors and, to them, cannot make conscious decisions. It is exhausting just trying to learn. read more

This school is impacted and cannot provide educational services to its students--do not send your child to McClatchy High School if he or she needs any kind of "help" in school--you know, like actually being taught material. There is zero communication from teachers to parents, so don't expect to be alerted that your child is failing until after he or she has failed said class. If your child struggles academically, your only hope is that he or she is also a behavioral problem because those are the only students who get any attention or intervention. Your quiet, well-behaved child will be left to fall through the cracks. Hopefully your child will not be assigned Mr. Klopp for a counselor since he doesn't seem to have any idea as to what's going on--with your child, the school, credits for graduation, absolutely clueless. His philosophy is to let freshmen fail and they can "make up the credits later." Yes, that's right--fail freshman year and roll right in as a sophomore after having learned nothing for a year--it's no problem! This isn't a school. It's a daycare center for teens. The administration is clueless and unhelpful and absolutely demonstrates zero concern for anyone who isn't in HISP or an athlete. If you are a parent and are thinking about enrolling your child in this school, just know your child would get more of an education sitting at home with $10 worth of used books and a pencil--however, if your child needs weed, some sexual experience, or a good fight, send him or her on down to McClatchy High School where your tax dollars are hard at work..... read more
