You got that cool sleek nouveau-diner pro-tradition anti-nostalgia decor: "Tunnel vision to pure burgertime MMM!!" it screams. i.e. Your aesthetic suggestion is that I will be presented with a burger of note, pared down to a celebration of fundamentals: the meat will be ultra-beefy or indulgently cooked in a masterful black-and-blue fashion or sooo attractively seasoned, the bacon will be lovemade all the way (cf. my review on a certain 'Goose the Market'), the bun will cradle its contents with JUST the right texture and real-bread depth of flavour; SOMETHING, for my £9.25-no-fries-with-that order, will be profound. Well. To/at your table I came/didn't come, y'know? It was nice and tasty. It was cooked well (i.e. medium). The bacon was not pathetic or anything. There was cheese of some sort. It was in no way profound. £9.25. Meh. The "pared down" motif showed strongest in the form of the Great White Sea of Plate, a lonely pickle canoe solipsistically suspended between outer shore and central Burger Island. The pickle did taste quite good. But look: austerity, with no particular in-mouth justification. I mean, if you're gonna be expensive and not sensorily singular, at least be calorically indulgent! Throw that burger in a basket under a heaping American-fries pile and leave me too sated to analyse. Dirty and remorseful over prim and anticlimactic. Otherwise I might leave you a 2 star Yelp review and THEN what'll you say, huh??!!

If I learned one thing from this less than impressive meal, it's that being able to cook is a useful life skill. It dawned on me that I must save a ton of money each month, and in turn enjoy way better food, by rarely wasting my time with places like this. In the future when I'm craving a burger I'll try a bit harder to find that Honest Burger branch I think is nearby (although untested, I've always thought there food was way better). Alternately, if in the area and hungry go cheap and cheerful with a picnic from Pret, walk to Melrose and Morgan in Primrose Hill, or browse some of the food vendors across the canal in the market. Look, it's not bad, I've just experienced better. And at this price it really should be better.

The staff are friendly and obliging; occasionally giving out free lollipops. It is also a good place to get a sense of life and community in Finsbury Park, which, otherwise, can sometimes feel a little bleak. I have good memories of mornings-after, and last minute pre-uni snacks in Molen's and I strongly reccomend it to students or anyone who is new to the area.

I'm not sure Molen's is quite a greasy spoon in the traditional sense, because they also do some dinner options, deli sandwiches, Sunday lunches etc, but the breakfasts definitely have that greasy spoon feel: un-reconstructed good British breakfast. The service is friendly and swift - I always wonder if it's a sign of good service or a sign of my penchant for bacon that means that they recognize my friends and I when we go in. There's a dazzling array of set combinations. A quick hint: if you want to build your own, it's usually cheaper to find the closest set and then sub in and out individual items - my particular preference is usually the Set 6 but to sub in black pudding for the sausage (the sausage being the only thing on the menu that's a bit of a disappointment) and then an extra side of Bubble. Yes, I realise this means that I am eating chips, bubble and toast in one meal, but the bubble & squeak here is perfect, and usually the highlight of the plate. So, don't expect anything that is going forever to change your perception of breakfast, do expect a massive plate of tasty food that will fill you up and banish all hangover woes. Now, if only I could sub in a Bloody Mary for that tea...

It was so cheap and SO good. It was exactly what we needed. We had good service and also good coffee! I would definitely come again if staying in the same area. What we didn't catch in any of the reviews or until we were done eating was that this is cash only. Since we had just arrived in the country we had zero cash on us. We got acquainted with an ATM very quickly (right down the street)!

And they demanded places to eat, and places to shop, and places to drink, with other similar spirits and their Bugaboo prams filled with flaxen haired organic, free range children. And then in one dreadful year, they opened The White Company, Oliver Bonas and Foxtons. The Richmondification of East Dulwich was almost complete. This isn't a teary eyed pean to a stalwart of the retail community deemed unsuitable for little Jemimahs and Jacobs, closed and turned into a high-class cheese shop, this is just to prepare you for the people who occupy the Blue Mountain Cafe on Northcross Road, ground zero of the yummy mummy. It's twee. By which I mean reclaimed oak furniture and country cottage chic, and mismatching, and quirky, some of those things deliberately. They have set spaces for the prams and pushchairs - woe betide anyone trying to get a table here from 10.30 on a weekday. It defines the term mother's meeting.
