Many times, during the "year" at salon for haircut(always pre booked every 4 weeks with a chosen hair stylist), "glitches" in my appointment(s) when I arrived frequently occurred. Such as: 1. Appointment unfortunately erased by the computer - they( husband and wife(owners)) would scramble to fit me in -telling me to come back later or wait until my stylist arrived. 2. Hair stylist who had been cutting my hair, moved away. Salon owners said they booked me with the stylist's friend. Yet on the subsequent 3 appointments, new stylist not at salon for one reason or another. 2 times she finally arrived later than my booked time. 3. Caused me a feeling of humiliation, worthlessnes, uncomfortably , while sitting in a chair waiting for stylist to arrive, the 2 owners, behind desk communicating in their language which I do not understand, spoke loud enough for me to hear that they "seemed not to know what to do for me. After around 20 minutes waiting, I left salon. I never even received a phone call or text of apology. I don't recommend this salon for individuals who are not part of the so called ethnic community. I visit every six months for my hair cut and shape. I have had two haircuts with Arissa and this…read moreis the only salon I will go to! Arissa is my favorite hair stylist! She keeps my hair looking super healthy and is such a sweetheart. I like getting around 1" give or take cut off for healthy ends. She is very skilled as far as her precision goes and great at guiding with her expertise when it comes to shape and length. She also gives great product recommendations I should mention! She cut my face framing pieces perfectly, and my hair is very even, thick, and healthy looking each time I leave her chair. She preps the hair thoroughly and gets it pin straight to achieve a flawless cut. My hair is 3b texture naturally , but I always blow dry and silk press it a day before my appointment. I personally like how much more even my cuts come out when they are done on fully straightened hair, because then when it is curly again it looks better than when I used to get devacuts and curly hair cuts. Not sure if that's because curly hair has a mind of its own but I take very good care of it so it's not an issue with maintenance, haha. If you have curly hair I recommend trying it! The ambience of this salon is professional , clean, accommodating and spacious. The front desk staff ladies are wonderful and polite they acknowledge all the clients who walk through their doors with kindness. I like that they bring you a drink of water when you arrive if you want one. It is quite a busy and happening salon so I like to visit on early week days before noon. I think $80 is a good price for a perfect haircut and shape up- mind you, pricing varies slightly more or less based on the stylist you select. Spa Bleu also gives rave-worthy facials. I have purchased and re purchased for my mom on many occasions and she says this spot is her favorite because of how relaxing and long the facials here. She says it is her special spa for when she wants to treat herself extra if she is not visiting her normal cosmetologist that month. Her go to treatment is the 1 hour Custom Tulasara Facial 60 Min, neck & decollete, and LED Therapy add on with Paula! Try out Spa Bleu if you are looking for a great haircare and facial spot! I am super happy with my results! Below I've attached some photos.

I get the digital perm where they do magic straight perm on the top and curls on the bottom. I like my hair to look like it's been curl ironed so she picks out the perfect curl size for me. I've tried several styles and Ms. Ahn perfects the styles every time. Now I stick to the one I like, since I've going to Ms. Ahn for many years (10+). This is premium Korean hair care. There's always a saying "you get what you pay for". I've tried other spot in Chicagoland and it's not what you would get at Kim Sun Young. Sure, I can pay cheaper but the quality I got was not the same, so I always return to Ms. Ahn to take care of my hair. With my digital perm, she explains to me how to care for my curls, and also let me know how the condition of my hair/scalp is and what I need to do to get improve my hair health. I made an appointment about 3 weeks in advance for a Friday morning digital perm. It typically takes 3-4 hours for the perm. With my iPad and AirPod, time flies by while I'm watching the show. They also have a small "earcap" that looks like a shower cap so your ears are protected & my AirPod. I get a cut first, then a perm. Friday afternoon with 3 hair professionals and 2 assistants. They are busy because they are able to work simultaneous while the perm client is waiting for perm chemical to settle into the hair, they can do a hair cut.

I went back and forth as to whether I wanted to write this, but I do think my experience was…read moreunfortunate and may not necessarily reflect their skill and service here, but I think it's still worth sharing. The TL;DR is that I was unable to get my hair coloring done and also got a haircut that was not very flattering. I felt I looked better when I came in vs when I came out of the salon. This was all despite the effort I made to contact this salon multiple times beforehand to ensure that they were able to do the hair that I wanted. In January, I had my hair cut and permed in Los Angeles, which I was happy with, but I wanted to also make my hair blonde with this hair style (I'm a Korean American with dark hair). I confirmed with my hairstylist in LA as well as the internet that you should wait a while to bleach your hair to space out the damage, at least ~4 weeks. I currently live in Cleveland, OH for grad school and heard there aren't many good salons in OH for Asian hair. So I did my research, found this salon in Chicago with good ratings, read through ratings, looked through photos, and then first messaged them on instagram to set an appt. I sent them reference photos of the color I wanted, plus a current selfie showing my hair to ask if what I wanted was possible. I also explained I was going to be driving in from Cleveland (took me 7 hours since I avoided tolls) so I wanted to really make sure before I made the trip. I told them also about my perm from weeks ago (it was going to be over 7 weeks since the perm for the appt day I asked for). I also called 24 hours later directly to the salon since I didn't get a response on instagram right away. The person on the phone booked me with Michelle. I then proceeded to explain my situation and told them I sent them photos on instagram. The woman on the phone tried to reassure me saying "it's okay, Michelle can do whatever color. Don't worry about it." I took their word. They also responded on instagram confirming they could book me an appt and gave me an estimate of pricing (starting around $350) and time range (3-4 hours) based on the color I wanted. The day of my appt, I show Michelle my pictures and what I want. She starts rambling about how the color I want is not possible, or needs to be bleached multiple times because my hair color is too dark. I was asking her to clarify if that meant I have to come in on different days to get it done, and she wasn't very clear and eventually just said, "It's okay, we will figure it out. For now, you need a haircut right?" So we cut my hair to a length I was satisfied with, but since it wasn't dried/styled yet, I wasn't sure what the finished product would look like yet. Then we went back to discussing color. First, she tells me, "okay, we can bleach multiple times, but it may take a long time, maybe even 6 hours. Is that ok?" I said yes (I knew it might take a long time so I purposefully asked for their earliest appt time that day). "And it's going to be around $400-500. Is that ok?" I said yes again. THEN she says, "oh, and the bleach is going to flatten your perm, so you won't have your perm anymore." This is when I was stunned and hesitated and asked for time to think. I was already starting to worry about whether the color would actually look okay on me based on Michelle's initial response to my request, but then to also not have my perm that I had paid for before but I still wanted to be a part of my overall hairstyle? I was incredibly disappointed. I was definitely ignorant of how this hair stuff worked, but that's why I tried doing my research beforehand and asked them multiple times, sending them pictures and explaining my situation BEFORE I planned a trip 7 hours away by car. I don't have many free weekends, so this was also difficult for me to schedule. Eventually I declined the color because I didn't want to risk not liking the final color AND losing my perm. But I wish the staff, all the people I talked to here, told me BEFORE I made the trip to Chicago, and BEFORE she cut my hair. I honestly would not have gotten my haircut had I known I wasn't going to get color. I know cheaper hair salons for hair cuts in the area and might've opted for another place if I wanted one (my hair was already short, but the haircut price was still $70). The staff didn't necessarily act rude or anything, but they clearly failed to take my situation into consideration despite all of my effort and wasted my time, money and energy. And honestly I don't like the hair cut. I look like Johnny Depp from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the lack of layers is not flattering. I have to pull my hair back daily to look decent. I'm just sad this happened and they may be competent at hair, but the inconsiderate communication was really disappointing.

She was super friendly and really helpful with offering advice every time I told her about my hair problems. Too dry, too frizzy, too damaged, everything! Believe me when I say my hair has been through a lot over the last decade and more. Patty washed my hair with an amazing minty shampoo and also a very light, non-creamy conditioner which I specifically asked for (yes!). Then she also showed me a leave-in conditioner and thermal protection spray that she thought would be best for my hair. What I most appreciated was that at no point did she ever try to sell me any of their products. She simply talked to me as if she was recommending something for a friend. The haircut turned out to be pretty good. My bangs were cut a little too short than what I would've liked though but luckily it grows out fast so it's not that big of a deal.
