A bakery is not usually my first choice for a meal but the prepared sandwiches caught my eye. I love salmon and eggs but this had a special kick... horseradish. Wow, what a combination. We made it just in time, within minutes, the line exploded. This appears to be a local favorite. I can see myself back here to try something else.

Still something of a secret despite success and awards, the Rudolfsheim area and 15th district in general more slow to modernize than other parts of Vienna, prices at Cafe Konditorei Rieppel trend lower than centrally located spots whether for Coffee, Pastries or even an unexpected slice of Pizza. Best known for Bread, Vollkorn with Sesame Seeds wrapped around room-temperature Wienerschnitzel a bargain for €4.20, Viennoiserie is noteworthy for Zauner Klipferl with entirely natural filling while Krapfen com in various flavors with an airy open crumb. Not English-fluent, though an understanding of Austria's Coffeehouse culture will help visiting guests make good choices, Linzerkipferl resembles Shortbread dipped in Chocolate with Apricot Jelly while Apple Strudel made the old-fashioned way comes crisp on the outside with Apples, Breadcrumbs and Raisins all competing for attention at the center.

Much has improved since then, but the area right around the Schwendermarkt is still very rough around the edges. I was soaking up this very different Vienese ambiance when I encountered a surprising bright spot. A brand new Schrott bakery! Intrigued, I headed in. It was well-lit and cheery inside. The man behind the counter knew his stuff and could tell us all about the various breads. It's a sunny, forward-thinking business in a section of the city which is rapidly changing.

Oh, and it was! We got the hugest piece of strudel I have ever seen for less than 2 euro (most others I saw in Wien went for 3+ euro). The pastry was light and flaky, the filling was fresh, the apples still had a little crisp to them, and it had a lovely cinnamon flavor.... If you are in the neighborhood, don't miss this small shop's baked goods.

I had to point to each pastry for her to give me a description. No idea what the names were until I looked at the receipt. I ended up with Maraner Nusskipferl which has a nut filling. It was too nutty for me that I only ate the dough. Also got the topfengatschen which has a sweet cream cheese filling. My favorite that I ended up getting this throughout my stay.
