I had to get to work between seven and 730 each day and this bakery opens at 6:15 AM each day, which was perfect to be able to leave between 630 and 6:45 AM each day. The staff inside is super friendly and she speaks English very well to be able to explain what is inside each of the pastries since nothing is labeled. It's very helpful since you can't tell from just looking at them what it's filled with. I would point to a pastry and she would tell me if it had fruit nuts, custard, or chocolate inside. They also have an espresso machine and it makes the espresso very hot, which was perfect since I had to drive about 40 to 45 minutes. They have a large variety of breads and pastries. Things are priced very well and this is a tiny shop with just standing room inside but outside they have a few tables if you want to eat versus take it on the go. I was mostly taking it on the go and eating it while driving in the car since everything is packaged in individual bags that can be used as a rapper. She would also tell me if things were very typical in Germany because I wanted to try a lot of the local pastries and foods. This was the perfect way to start each morning. This is not in your typical downtown of Heidelberg and is on a side street which was very close to my Hilton hotel. The parking is a little tight and hard to find, but there is usually a spot you can stop at for just a few quick minutes needed to order and go. Everything was baked fresh and tasted really good. There is a nut bar that is coming in Germany called Walnut Kuchen that was very delicious and to my surprise not very sweet although it is dense so it will fill you up. It's very similar to Nussecken (German Nut Corners) but was rectangular not a triangle. I also loved the pretzels with cheese (Käsebrezel). Great bakery to checkout if in Heidelberg a bit west of the old town.

Everything I've purchased has been fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced, and there's a certain cookie there - the Heidelberger Herz - that, while it doesn't look like the cookies I grew up eating from a bakery near my father's law office in Seattle, tastes exactly like them. The taste is so exact that it's almost eerie, but it's very welcome, especially when I'm feeling a little bit homesick or nostalgic. Also, the service is impeccable - friendly and helpful, and patient with my non-native German skills.

Also, keep in mind that your customers need to be able to tell you what they want to order and in order to do so they need to know the name of the item if they don't speak German. And then she took orders from everyone except myself, making it clear that she didn't want my business. I recommend going to the sit-down side and ordering your pastry item from there. The pink pastries are hard. I tried cut one with a knife, and it went flying. I was going to get something else, but I lost my appetite after being screamed at and unable to order because I couldn't write things down or take pictures of the things I wanted to eat. The ambiance is nice. Also, thank you to the male server, who exhibited kindness, unlike his other coworker.
