What a find. When you walk in you are greeted with a large counter of gelato, another with pastries…read moreand beautiful tortes. The ambiance here is also quite incredible. Welcoming and warm. My mother uses a walker , so I was holding the door as she entered and since there is a step down at the entrance, half the staff and a few customers all came running to help her down the step. Awesome. Aside from the delicious baked goods and the absolutely fantastic gelato, they also offer hearty meals. A lot of Austrian and German specialties. I enjoyed a big portion of Currywurst mit Pommes. Perfectly executed. One of the better ones I have eaten in my lifetime. Mom opted for potato cakes with apple sauce. Judging from the speed she devoured those, they must have been really good also... So good she refused to share even one bite. Grrr. Of course we each had a slice of their cakes. Both were delicious and we wished we could eat more, but alas we couldn't eat another bite. So if you are waiting for your cruise ship as we were, or if you are staying a bit longer, this is the place I would recommend.

The Stemplinger family not only runs a beautiful inn, but they really love what they do and are concerned that your stay is fantastic. Our room was very spacious with perfect household staff. You really have the sense that you are in a family home. The restaurant was great and we were lucky to be there during spargel season! The bakery was the best touch. Fresh bread, rolls and pastries always available. Frau Stemplinger was always working, making her home and gardens so comfortable for her guests. I would recommend this as a great base for travel around Bavaria, Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
We took a river cruise along the Danube and a 'must stop' is in Passau Germany. In reading through…read moreliterature, about 500,000 people visit this small city that has about 50,000 full time residents. To say the least, this city is overrun with tourism. There are groups walking around everywhere, listening to their tour guides holding up the plastic 'lollypop' of all shapes and colors. Not far from the main square, we found a reasonably quiet street with a wonderful coffee shop and restaurant. Anton has two entrances, but we learned that they serve the same food. We actually came here twice in our day in Passau. We chose to sit inside for coffee and pastry and later, outside for lunch. The coffee and chai tea that we were able to enjoy along with the absolutely most extraordinary apple strudel were excellent. The staff were very helpful, guiding us to select what's best in the bakery. The atmosphere was comfortable. Clearly, nearly everyone here is a tourist, but it didn't have the feel of a tourist trap. We asked around and several people suggested that we return here for lunch. And so we did just that. Sitting outside we had the chance to watch the many tours and tourists walk by. The main downside was that it's legal to smoke outside in the EU, not inside. And there was a group of smokers several tables away. Not terrible, but could be better. For lunch we enjoyed the soup of the day, spinach dumplings and clams in pasta along with a side salad. Everything was very fresh, well seasoned, and truly delicious. As we had dessert and coffee earlier, we elected not to have them again. There are likely several good restaurants in Passau. This is the one we chose and we were very satisfied. One last suggestion, if you are in the city after about 5 PM, all of the tours and most tourists have left. If you choose to walk at this time of the day, you can really enjoy the beauty without the people walking everywhere around you.

We were greeted warmly in German and when the host/waiter detected our American accents, and difficultly speaking German, he immediately transitioned to English. What a pleasant and professional gentleman! He also provided us with English menus. Awesome! The ambiance is amazing. Old world meets new world. This was a great spot to take a quick break before heading back to the boat.

The crust is just a bit crisp, not too hard and doesn't break off in great, hard flakes. The inside is tender but firm and the aroma of it burst in your mouth. The turkey ham is perfectly smoked and not over salty. The freshness is evident and quit a reward. I had to come back the next day for seconds! It will definitely be one of my best memories and I will miss it when I get back the the U. S. The pretzel rolls are beyond compare, excellent crust and great texture for the warm, soft interior and the flavor is beyond anything in the States. Starbucks cannot compare to the outstanding Austrian influence in the coffee! Another must have! Rich, robust, full bodied but not bitter. After stopping in at most of the bakeries, this one definitely is a head above the rest and worthy of international notice.
