    Chocolate strawberry cake and Nussknacker

The food is typical but the deserts are wonderful. A quaint little cafe behind Pfarrkirche St. Paul church in the old town section. Locals regularly visit this cafe. Five stars for the pastries and deserts!

Another great place for a tasty lunch. I had goulash with freshly baked bread and the man enjoyed his currywurst and fries. The fries are freshly cut just like In and Out. We each had the local lager - clean and crisp finish. They also have a great display of pastries to go. Our server was so nice and attentive.

I ordered a small chocolate birthday cake and everyone was nice, the prices are good and the cake is so tasty. I particularly loved how they packed the cake for me too. Will definitely be going back soon for a cup of coffee with my husband

    Sour cherry ice cream!!

Walking through the streets of Passau during the summer months can be hot. Super hot. After hearing that Cafe Simon had homemade ice cream, I convinced my dad to loan me 2 euros (I hadn't gone to exchange money yet) for an ice cream. The shop is right in front of the pink church and it's actually quite large. There is a large patio in the back of the cafe, nearer the Danube, with lots of tables and chairs and FLOWERS. The flowers are soooo pretty. In the cafe shop, you can buy candies, gingerbread, chocolate and pastries. They had very nice looking desserts, and all the gingerbread is in nice packages. My only problem is that I can't read German, so I would have had to get one of the English speaking workers to translate for me. There were about 12 flavors of ice cream, again, labeled in German, so I needed some help. There were many fruit flavors, which are my favorite, but from coconut to apricot to strawberry, I chose sour cherry. Super German. I love cherries, and I love sour cherries even more. I have three jars of the Trader Joe's kind in my kitchen at home..... It was maybe some of the best ice cream I've ever had. I'm so glad I stopped in to cafe Simon instead of the other random ice cream places we passed by.

Gingerbread is king at this welcoming cafe that has been family owned for generations. Their pastries, cakes and cookies are beautifully presented and service is friendly and multilingual. They have three types of gingerbread, each sweetened in a different way: sugar (newest), molasses (my favorite) and old-school marizpan (has nuts). A traditional treat for the holiday season that can be enjoyed anytime. The German word for this treat is "lebkuchen," be sure to try all three types when you visit!

We took a river cruise along the Danube and a 'must stop' is in Passau Germany. In reading through…read moreliterature, about 500,000 people visit this small city that has about 50,000 full time residents. To say the least, this city is overrun with tourism. There are groups walking around everywhere, listening to their tour guides holding up the plastic 'lollypop' of all shapes and colors. Not far from the main square, we found a reasonably quiet street with a wonderful coffee shop and restaurant. Anton has two entrances, but we learned that they serve the same food. We actually came here twice in our day in Passau. We chose to sit inside for coffee and pastry and later, outside for lunch. The coffee and chai tea that we were able to enjoy along with the absolutely most extraordinary apple strudel were excellent. The staff were very helpful, guiding us to select what's best in the bakery. The atmosphere was comfortable. Clearly, nearly everyone here is a tourist, but it didn't have the feel of a tourist trap. We asked around and several people suggested that we return here for lunch. And so we did just that. Sitting outside we had the chance to watch the many tours and tourists walk by. The main downside was that it's legal to smoke outside in the EU, not inside. And there was a group of smokers several tables away. Not terrible, but could be better. For lunch we enjoyed the soup of the day, spinach dumplings and clams in pasta along with a side salad. Everything was very fresh, well seasoned, and truly delicious. As we had dessert and coffee earlier, we elected not to have them again. There are likely several good restaurants in Passau. This is the one we chose and we were very satisfied. One last suggestion, if you are in the city after about 5 PM, all of the tours and most tourists have left. If you choose to walk at this time of the day, you can really enjoy the beauty without the people walking everywhere around you.

My wife and I popped in to try the likor, a latte, and a serving of strudel. Everything was great!…read more What was exceptionally good was the service! We were greeted warmly in German and when the host/waiter detected our American accents, and difficultly speaking German, he immediately transitioned to English. What a pleasant and professional gentleman! He also provided us with English menus. Awesome! The ambiance is amazing. Old world meets new world. This was a great spot to take a quick break before heading back to the boat.
