City Park is located right smack in the center of Bergen and is considered to be the first public park created in the city. After the horrible fire of 1855 the city of Bergen was redesigned to resist the spread of massive fires and so the park was conceived as sort of a fire break. It was opened in 1865 and expanded and changed over the decades.
The park today is very pleasant, lots of trees and flowers and Lille Lungegardsvannet to walk around. And of course all kinds of weird sculptures, statues and cool things that the Norwegians seem so fond of.
The park is well used, when we were there we saw hoards of schoo kids running through the park doing various fun things as well as older people walking around and tourists just taking it all in.
A lovely, scenic and very useful and appreciated park. I doubt if there will be any more fires like the horrific one in 1855 and the park today is used and enjoyed by the people of Bergen as well as visitors from other countries read more
