For a long time, I've made art but struggled with feeling like what I was doing was really creative. Michael, the owner and instructor at the studio, has transformed the way I think about the creative process through the avenue of figure drawing. His classes are the most meaningful part of my week. If you're looking for an instructional class focused on technique for drawing more accurately, this may not be the right place for you. Instead, the classes offer a new connected way of living--engaged with beauty both around you and internal to you. So much of the class is about unlearning not just how you draw but also how you value the creative process. It is the most challenging class I've ever taken and there's no amount of brute force I can apply to get it other than trusting the process and the instructor. Nonetheless, as frustrating as it is, there's nothing else I do that is more rewarding. It takes a lot of effort to strip away your aesthetic value system to get at the core of what you find beautiful, but if the result is a more meaningful existence, then that investment is priceless. Some practical aspects of the instructional sessions. Michael strives to provide only the best models to inspire you not to capture their poses but to feel something in yourself. The medium is stick charcoal and newsprint is available cheaply at the studio. The class is a lengthy commitment of 20 weeks of three-hour sessions but is highly structured and builds on successive lessons. Michael also allows you to make-up classes. Although there is a high upfront cost, for the hours of instruction and model time spread out over the weeks, it's a steal.

Everything was going ok however, at some point Sirron asked if I had "conservative" ideals. I was taken aback a bit, but I answered honestly that I said that I am conservative, due to my experience being inside of Google and how I saw them become evil and how I'm trying to stop their agenda. He literally then goes into a tirade about how everyone who's conservative is evil, and how whites have ruined the planet and how I should move out of San Francisco because no one wants conservatives here, and how he will never work with anyone who is a conservative -- Wow. Really unprofessional attitude. And just to set the record clear, I didn't insult Sirron or anything like that. He just tore into me because he wanted to. He could have just been professional and declined the work offer, thus avoided sharing his intolerant, prejudicial and inflammatory remarks. But nope. I really wish I had recorded the conversation somehow because this sort of encounter would have gone viral on social media. Seriously, it was that bad. Other's be warned!

Alden was prepared when we arrived and provided a comprehensive introductory wheel throwing class in 2 hours. We were at varying levels of experience. It was so much fun! Where able, she always tried to provide us tips, tidy our pieces, or outright rescue them. Our entire group had so much fun and between the 8 of us, we created about 20 pieces to be fired. Looking at their offerings after, I also appreciate that Kasama regularly holds single classes because many studios tend to push your towards a longer commitment right at the onset and it's a little scary when you don't actually know if you'll enjoy it. I'm fairly confident I'll come back for another session soon enough! Plus, it's in such a great neighborhood to grab some food before or after too! All in all, we had a great time and we're all looking forward to picking up our creations later!

Yes I always wanted to try ceramics and yes, I thought I might have an affinity for it, but I never would have expected it to change so much in my life in a positive way. The instructors here are something special. They have a rare ability to meet you exactly where you are -- whether you're a complete beginner fumbling through your first attempt at centering clay or someone who's been coming for months and is ready to push their skills further. They're generous with their time, patient without being condescending, and genuinely excited about what they do. That enthusiasm is contagious. What made me decide to become a member is the community. There's a warmth here that's hard to manufacture -- people cheering each other on and lifting one another up. It's a space where you can step away from screens and noise and just make something with your hands, surrounded by people who get it. I didn't expect to find that when I signed up for a ceramics class, but I'm so glad I did.

I plan to continue to additional sessions. 6 week intro class was $395 or you can book a try day session but strongly recommend the full six week session to learn good foundation and have studio time to learn at your own pace. He repeatedly was rude, condescending, and belittling to me when I asked for help (umm... who's gonna tell him it's a school?!?) He also found it appropriate to make a racist joke to me (called my keffiyeh, a "terrorist rag"), and often made sexual jokes, in a room full of women. When I texted and emailed about my issues, Adam ignored me. No response (and have the receipts for it). I disputed my class charges to which he did not fight... but was majorly disappointed in my experiences overall. Would not go back nor recommend.

David, the owner, welcomed us into the studio and gave us a tour before we started. He taught us the basics and all the important things to know when working on the wheel. He was incredibly informative, hands-on, patient, and welcoming--and also really funny, which made the whole experience even more relaxed and enjoyable. It was our first time trying wheel throwing and we had so much fun that my husband and I couldn't stop talking about it afterward. We each made two pieces, and for beginners I think we did pretty well lol! We were honestly so excited to come back and pick up our creations. The staff and members were also super friendly. One of the members asked if we were doing a lesson and when we said yes she told us we would have a great time--and she was not wrong. They also offer memberships if you're interested, and the studio has a very welcoming, community-based vibe.
