The first things I noticed after I sat down in the Sharpe Planetarium were the giant,…read morebarbell-shaped machine in the center of the room and the dozens of projectors circling the room. That, and the disco balls. Sadly, the disco balls weren't used during the presentation of "Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories". The lights dimmed, and I leaned back and watched as the star machine and projectors flashed the night sky onto the planetarium's domed ceiling. The current program at the planetarium is about a family looking at the night sky and telling the stories behind some of the most well-known constellations. The current show, "Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories", is about 30 minutes long and completely family friendly (it closes with a singalong, too). Following the regular program, Planetarium Supervisor David Maness projected some images of the night sky as seen from Memphis onto the ceiling and pointed out where common constellations are located. He also mentioned that currently (as in, tonight) Venus, Mars, and Saturn will all be visible, though, to the naked eye, they'll just look like extra bright stars. The Sharpe Planetarium has been open inside the Pink Palace Museum since 1979. Currently, there are 16 public and school group shows in the planetarium every week, and usually a few special private shows (the planetarium can be rented for the evening). The planetarium's shows change about every three months, which keeps them seasonally appropriate - the constellations that are in the spring are different from the ones that appear in the fall. The planetarium has shows every week, Tuesday - Saturday. Admission is separate from regular museum admission, but it's a bargain at $4.50 for adults and $4 for kids.

I went tonight and it was awful. Nothing about it was scary at all. We got shoved into groups of up to 15 and it lade the experience awful. You could hear and see jump scares from the front of the line so you were never scared. THE LIGHTS IN THE ACTUAL HAUNTED HOUSE WERE SO BRIGHT. WHY! Last time it was pitch black and you literally had to feel your way through the maze. The front person held a glow stick for light and that was about it. It was pretty bad. Bad waste of money. As of the time of this review it contains four haunts, one stand alone and the other is a three in one. ALL are fantastic! For $30 you get admission to one haunt but for a mere $5 more you get all four, so why wouldn't you do that? In fact for $15 more you get VIP line access to all four, which on a busy night would be totally with it! They make a conscious effort to distribute patrons between the two cues so wait time is minimized but of course on a busy night you could wait for a bit if you choose GA. Regardless, these are worth the wait. These are theater quality sets, with well trained acting staff, and professional makeup. We chose the behind the scenes tour for $70 per ticket which included VIP access to all four haunts, once we finished and the lights went out. I didn't know what to expect, but Ethan, who is the creative director, gave us our tour and it was also fantastic! We arrived about two hours prior to lights out with the tour start time scheduled to start at around 1.5 hours prior to lights out. Ethan started early and went long! We toured the main haunt and were shown things like how the scare boxes worked, the lighting, how the sets were built, he talked about the mechanics behind the sets, we saw makeup and costuming as the actors were getting ready as well as the workshop. He also walked us through the other three haunts albeit with less detail as opening was approaching! I'd been through professional haunts before so I knew they were high quality but I had absolutely no idea how much went into producing and running one! Very impressive. The tour is well worth it but at the very least you need to experience their work. Parking is good, well lit, monitored by MPD, security is employed starting in the parking lot so, while we went in the back door and bypassed all that, I could tell it was super safe.

Amos Woodruff and his brother came to Memphis from Rahway, New Jersey in 1845 to expand their carriage-making business. In 1870, Amos Woodruff purchased a plot of land for $12,000 and began construction on the mansion which would end up costing the Woodruffs $40,000 to build. Unfortunately, about 12 years later, the yellow fever epidemic forced the Woodruff family to sell the house.l Noland Fontaine purchased the house from the Woodruffs in 1883 for $40,000 and his family lived there until 1929. In 1930, the house was sold to Rosa Lee, who used the house to expand her art school, Lee Memorial Art Academy. The school moved to Overton Park in 1959, and established themselves as Memphis Art Academy, later becoming the Memphis College of Art. The Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities saved the house from demolition after 2 years of vacancy, restored the mansion, and then opened its doors as a historic house museum

It was definitely nice to come off our ship and get bussed right over to our stop. This is a place that I have heard about for years (my whole life) and was finally going to have an opportunity to visit. In a word or two... This was not at all what I expected. Coming from Long Island, NY I expected to see a building the size of the Taj Majal. I drive locally and see groups of houses larger than what I was about to walk into. BUT when I entered... It is magnificent and the beautiful and progressive indoors and surrounding area was better than I could have ever imagined. Hard to believe that Elvis was only 22 years old when he purchased the Graceland estate. The big beautiful mansion and living area is clearly the separated house from the the rest of the estate where the shops and attractions, museums, and dining facilities are. We had a very short wait for the tour shuttle bus to take us to the mansion for our VIP tour. (which essentially means that you could go in and come back on the same day.) The tour includes an interactive iPad tour of the living room, piano room), dining room, the kitchen, TV room, pool room, and the famous Jungle Room. All the rooms were very well lit and actually very comfortable. I could see myself sitting on a couch our chair laughing and enjoying conversation with my friends. It was all over the top lovely and a home way ahead of it's time. All the rooms are all very special and I found the kitchen much like any home in the 60's. I also loved the TV room where there were multiple mounted TVs in the wall. How progressive was that. There is a certain feeling you get as you walk through the house and knew how much he loved it and enjoyed being with his family here. It is truly a special place. (More to be written on the 'Graceland" review. Surrounding the mansion the tour continues to his dad's office, the Racquetball Building, museum of all of Elvis's personal effects (with so much significant memorabilia,) and finally the Meditation Garden, which is a beautiful somber area where his graves and those of all his family member are located. I will finish with the thought I need to come back and look again, see what I missed and just let my mind wonder and become a part of the incredible space KUDOs to the wonderful team here and all the great efforts taken to keep this piece of history so well kept.

The event was a no fuss set up, but provided almost everything one might want while attending this FREE event - including food truck, beer and wine sales, and local vendors selling adorable clothes for women (sorry guys). The only thing one could ask for is more shady spots to stand - it was super hot out when I attended the event (once they add these I will make this a 5 star review!). Despite this, it was a wonderful event that allowed me to connect with fellow Memphians. I left smiling and thankful to live in such a great city! It's in a neighborhood that many locals don't frequent (Broad Ave Art District), but is worth the adventure and appears safe (take normal safety measures - like don't leave your purse on the passenger seat while at the event!). I think the events in this space will simply continue to expand. Free Wifi is also available in the pavilion. It appears to be available for rent for private use.
