Such a beautiful gift shop! I always find something here when we visit Missoula. I love the shelves upon shelves of loose tea (and the prepackaged ones, too) -- especially the local Missoula flavors. I also love that you can create your own spice combinations by selecting jars off the shelves and bringing them to the counter to have the salespeople measure them out for you. There are beautiful housewares--tablecloths, dishes, frames --and pretty handcrafted jewelry. There's also a cute cafe in back that I'll have to try next time. read more

This was a really cute coffee/apothecary(?) shop we stopped at for some hot drinks. My husband and I split a chai latte (a little on the sweet side for me - I like it more spicy), and my parents got hot cider. Both tasty on a cold day. The atmosphere was cool - in the back was the cafe where we got our drinks, and we had to walk through the front of the shop which had a bunch of spices, herbs, teas etc in jars. There was also a bunch of different chocolate candies in jars. Would stop by here for another drink or to get some spices. read more

Cool place for excellent or rare teas. The people are kind and the only down side is pricing on the "things other than teas," it's ridiculous. But, if you want tea in bulk or maybe a sample.. it's perfect for you. I've never eaten in the restaurant side, so I cannot comment on that. But tons of cute things to look at and purchase, we often buy our scented oils there. They have a plethora of them. Super cool. read more

A cute shop with a restaurant in the back. I stopped by the shop to see the teas and spices, I didn't realize they had a restaurant too. The front part of the store has teas, spices, and lots of trinkets to browse. The back half of the shop is a restaurant. I had the pastrami and provolone sandwich and the soup of the day. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. They don't take credit cards in the back of the store which I didn't realize, but they do have an ATM. They have a few booths and some seats at the bar, so you might have to wait to get a spot. The service at the restaurant wasn't great, but overall I really enjoyed this spot. read more

The coolest place in Missoula. There's an apothecary/bulk herb up front that also sells novelty/gift type items alongside pharmaceuticals. Store has tons of stuff, funny birthday cards, candies. Gift items, wide varieties of herbs, teas, coffee beans. At the end of the isle, there is a cafe with coffees, sandwiches, baked goods and milk shakes. We got the coffee milk shake, it was very good. Will be back for lunch soon. By the way, other reviewers commented on the lighting of the place while I find it fine, not "dark" to me. read more

Remember when Butterfly anticipated trends? Avoided trends?? Bought real stuff created by real people? ***Remember when you were maybe 25 or 35 (or even 45 !) and could see in the dark?*** A wise man referred to the last-decade Rockin' Rudy's as: "Walmart for Hippies". Thus, Butterfly Herbs would be: "Gluten-free Walmart for Hippies". But dark. (*At least at "Bruce's Boutique" you can see the "Made-by-Chinese-Children" label.) Butterfly seems to subsist on low rent and lower expectations. (***And an even lower lighting bill.) Scott has been phoning it in for well over a decade. (Ketamine therapy? Consultation with retirement expert?) Who the halcyon knows! I just know it's dark.....and that sensitive little espresso cup was machine-made in 2001. Dark. Pray the landlord raises the rent and something less dilatant, something less nebulous, something REAL (Starbucks?) comes to town. Wouldn't you sooner be blindsided by blatant commercialism than hood winked into patronizing an ersatz-hippie joint where the herbs are bored and the owner can't find a single local jeweler to light up Dracula's Cave? Wear a miner's light. Go to the other alternative mini mart. Or not. Whatever. It's all good. read more

Awesome shop on the main drag of downtown Missoula and one not to be missed! It's a great combo of boutique type of shop with a cafe in the back. We took advantage of both in getting some great loose leaf tea and whole coffee beans up front; and a tasty lunch in the back. They offer each of their sandwiches on gluten free bread (perfect for us under doctor's orders). The ingredients were super fresh and were able to see the food prepared and knew it was made to order. The meats on the sandwich were quality and lean, while the fresh veg/lettuce was crisp and refreshing. Friendly and knowledgeable staff make this a must do when visiting Missoula. One note, the cafe doesn't accept cards. So you'll need to bring cash or use their ATM. The front part of the shop does accept credit/debit though. read more

Just Wow. Was this one of those most beautiful stores I've set foot in? Yes it was. Butterfly Herbs is both comforting and completely kitsch/unique at the same time. They have a wide variety of small gifts, local beans, whimsical teas, and a separate restaurant area in the back. This place transports you back in time a bit to the homeliness of a well decorated home plus some art deco personality. Like the historic pharmacy in the heart of downtown that first occupied its space, Butterfly Herbs has just the thing for whatever you're needing in the moment. (Not to mislead passers by, but that first business from a century ago is the reason the floor mosaic in the entryway says simply "Drugs.") Once you pass the well-curated display windows and heavy oak door, Butterfly Herbs invites you into a world of variety and wonder. Literally hundreds of teas and spices line the north wall in big glass jars, going so high as to require a library ladder (sourced from the glory days of The Mercantile, just down Higgins Avenue). The service counter on the south wall will weigh, package and price your selection, while fielding questions about the wide array of fresh-roasted coffees available in bulk. Whole bean or ground. Plus, your tenth pound of coffee gets your eleventh at no charge. In between those walls and below its high ceiling with period stamped tin tiles is a curious and inviting collection of gifts and pleasant oddities. A pleasing assortment of potions and lotions, candles and cards fill the front of the store and the seasonal gifts are perfect anytime, but especially for last-minute shopping. And then there's the counter at the back of the store: a hidden culinary gem in downtown. Its simple menu has only changed once in the last couple decades, with the best prices downtown. The counter offers excellent espresso, coffee drinks and a couple throw-back soda fountain favorites. The sandwiches are tasty and perfect for a midday break. Pro tip: you can take any one of the hundred bulk tea jars from the shelves and the counter will make a pot of that tea for you. Excellent option if you'd like to try before you buy. Quite the cross-section of folks who hang at different times of day back at the counter; some pop out the back door for a pause in summer sun. I accidentally found this store while looking for another business. They have nice soaps, locally made candles, and loads of loose teas and spices. Probably some of the best coffee drinks downtown and a great atmosphere to study or catch up with friends or drink coffee at the counter solo. It's cozy and the staff is friendly and it's a place you feel comfortable sitting and having a read and enjoying you're coffee or tea. Prices are very reasonable too, even a couple bucks less than some other downtown coffee spots. The shop is great too they have a great selection of unique gifts and greeting cards and tea and it's a great place to stop to grab a coffee and a quick gift for yourself or someone else. Beautiful store and amazing Chai. My husband said it was the best Chai he's had and he's pretty picky (he got a dirty iced chai). I personally loved the drip coffee. The mini cupcakes were DELISH.
