Other than my experience with Dr. Christie, I had a generally positive experience with Virginia Cancer Specialists - Arlington. The testing seemed quite thorough and is well-explained. The staff I met were friendly. The people taking my blood were competent and kind. The waiting area is pleasant. They are responsive if you present them with a problem. For example a new doctor was provided as soon as I told them what happened with Christie. The negative is that you are dealing with a well-oiled machine that can seem impersonal. There are numerous staff with impressive titles that you access through an on-line portal. You never know who is going to answer you, and they don't routinely give out last names. I'm a little old lady. I miss the time when you had a personal connection with your physician. You phoned your doctor if you had a problem and the doctor (not his nurse, not his secretary) phoned you back. You found out what might be the problem, what tests were being ordered, and why.

As a new patient, I wanted the opportunity to discuss my concerns and ask questions before agreeing to any procedures, especially considering that this involved my body, my health, and my insurance coverage. To my surprise, I was informed that the provider would not even speak with me unless I agreed to the procedure before she entered the room. I explained that I was not refusing the procedure; rather, I simply wanted to address my concerns first due to a previous medical experience that had been traumatic for me. Despite this, I was told that the provider would not see me and that I would need to leave. Since I had already taken time off work for this appointment, I reluctantly agreed to proceed with the procedure. When the provider entered the room, she did not acknowledge or address the negative experience I had already encountered, nor did she make any effort to help me feel comfortable or reassured under her care. Throughout the interaction, I found her demeanor to be rude, passive-aggressive, and combative. While discussing a previous iron infusion experience that had been traumatic for me, she dismissed what I had experienced and invalidated my concerns entirely. I was deeply disappointed that a healthcare professional working in oncology demonstrated such a lack of compassion, empathy, and respect. At the conclusion of the appointment, she informed me that I would be scheduled with a different provider because, in her words, she had "much, much, much sicker patients" than me and that I would not be seeing her again. I was shocked and hurt by such an insensitive remark. Throughout the visit, I already felt more like a number than a patient, but that final comment left me feeling as though my health concerns did not matter and were somehow less deserving of care and attention.

Wow! Color me yet another cancer patient who gets stamped with needs meds, needs referrals, send on…read morethe merry way to yet someone else in the multi-tentacled US healthcare system. Nothing bad at to say about the doctor I saw. It's a mill, spewing out patients. I got there 15 minutes early, I waited 30 minutes after that. I had vitals taken by 2 different people (little concern that my BP was high). Saw the doctor, who didn't explain anything I didn't already know. I'd been told she//he would cover all treatment options. She/He only does meds. Which were prescribed without really talking about whether I really need them. I had a VERY VERY early capture of cancer. Blink and you would haven't noticed. I have to see someone else for radiation possibility. Which is being recommended even though I didn't have a bad diagnosis. I feel gouged as a patient. No real individual assessment. The doctor was sympathetic, but nonetheless, I don't have any comfort in this system. I feel like I'm being shuttled along on a conveyor belt in an assembly line. HATE the US healthcare system. IT SUCKS.

Dr. Patel-Donnelly is one of the best hematologists you will find. Educated through Mount Sinai…read more(yes I do the research because it matters to me), she's very thorough in explaining her assessment process to patients. As a patient who partners with her healthcare providers, that's very important. I am not a doctor and don't pretend to be one, but I am a very good researcher and I expect doctors to be able to explain my condition to me in a manner that matches my education level so that I can follow up as needed. They also need to take the time to review my medical history to enable us to have informed discussions about why they are, or are not taking certain actions regarding my well-being. Dr. Patel Donnelly does all those things and more. You clearly understand why she arrives at her medical conclusions. As an African American patient, that is critically important to me because I'm finding more and more that all Healthcare Providers do not engage in that level of diligence when it comes to our health care. I'm also finding that many providers who are highly rated do not demonstrate that same level of concern for all patients. And that is very disappointing. But thankfully there are some health care providers out there who provide equitable, thorough care to all of us. Dr Patel Donnelly is one of them. On top of that, she has a great sense of humor and bedside manner. I thoroughly trust her judgement.

You never know when you will find yourself in a position to be sitting in an Oncology Office, however it the situation arises, you want to be in this office! I have been going here since 2006. I actually live in MD now, and still travel to Fairfax twice a month, just to keep this particular Doctor Group. I see Dr. Mary Wilkinson, who diagnosed me (twice) :( but I am still here! I am honestly still alive due to the medical plan she has put in place for me, the research, the specific medications, and the care of this office! This is one office that truly cares. They answer phone calls and return them the same day. They call you on scan results the same day you scan. They understand you are sitting by the phone with your hands wrenching. The Nursing Staff is wonderful, caring, and compassionate. You will get hugs, "you can do this", all along the way. They are tied to Fairfax Radiology, which does all the CT, PET, MRI's, etc. They are in the adjoining building, so everything is very centrally located. Parking is free..a bit of a pain, but what isn't a pain in Northern VA. Moral of the story, I wrote this review in hopes of helping someone maybe looking for a good Cancer Doctor, or who knows someone in need of a change from an uncaring Doctor. The day I was diagnosed for the 2nd time around, Dr. Mary Wilkinson, literally had a few tears in her eyes. She did not want to tell me this news, but she delivered it with a hug, a pat on my leg, and words filled with HOPE. Some Doctors don't give hope...she does, and for that reason, that is why I drive 60 miles one way to get there!!

I cannot express how sad, frustrated and insane VCS has been making me. I am having my first child…read moreand during your pregnancy you are not supposed to take stress, but this place has put so much stress on my pregnancy. Can I please give them a 0 stars??? I have 0 bad things to say about Dr. Lee, but let me take a few minutes to talk about their BILLING SPECIALISTS, who have no idea what they are doing. They coded all my transfusions incorrectly, my insurance left them several messages and they never responded to my insurance to correct the action. I had ONE person reach out to me, Sheryl who promised she would take care of this and keep me updated and I had to keep calling her at least 1ce every two weeks, which seems a bit absurd as they are asking me to stress less during the pregnancy. I have been seeing them since May, we are in September and I still have NO RESOLUTION. With a high risk pregnancy I would think they would be a bit empathetic and try to help reduce my stress but they have been consistently rude, inattentive, unresponsive and overall a terrible place to come. Now even with the doctor being good, I would still not recommend this place to ANYONE but because I started my service here I am obligated to continue with them, but this has to have been the worst experience in my life. My transfusions have been a nightmare and they have punctured a few of my veins, which has been a great addition to my anxiety. The photos are from iron transfusions in July. Edited: I spoke to the office manager Shannan Hoosier, who tried to convince me that in fact they did do the billing correctly, and she is unaware why a lot of patients with the same insurance as mine go through this issue. I continued to tell her that I am 100% sure they did not correctly code my billing and my insurance is claiming the same. She provided me the billing codes and indicated she is LOOKING at the billing and they in fact did do it correctly. After speaking with her, I contacted my insurance and again confirmed that they did not bill correctly. About ten minutes later, I received a call from Jessica Cook, their billing manager who indicated they billed me incorrectly ALL along. And she was working on this, to ensure the right billing was being applied. I left a voicemail to Shannan, but never received a call back, my guess is, or I hope she is embarrassed that she LIED to me and got caught.

For the past few years I have been coming to see Dr. Geoffrey Moorer and he is fabulous! He has to be one of the most down to earth doctors I have visited. He almost makes you forget you are even at the doctors office even though you know, that you know that you are. He is always on time for his appointments so I have never had to wait to be seen. He is not only invested in the reason you are there but also make sure that you are fully informed of whats going on, what you need to do, what can stay the same and offers any other suggestions/recommendations of things to do and or keep in mind. His nurse is also the highlight of my visits, we always manage to share a laugh or some words of encouragement with each other. She is also patient enough to take my BP twice, sometimes three times when I come because my white coat syndrome is always in full effect. The office is always spotless. If you need tea or coffee while you wait, they do have an industrial Keurig like machine and you can brew whatever your heart desires or will calm your nerves. Front office staff, especially Maria, is always helpful, efficient and smiling, which also is a big plus. I do like that they have a lab on sight so its one stop shopping for your labs whenever you have an appointment. I do appreciate that they make your lab appointment a week before your actual visit to ensure all the results are back in time for your visit. Tanya is a wonderful asset to the office as she makes labs a breeze, you are in and out in no time! If you are looking for an Oncologist, Dr. Moorer and his team are who you need to see and where you should be,

Each shot I get is $1500 out of my pocket and they let me get 4 shots in before telling me the shot wasnt covered by the program. They are kind enough to offer a payment plan for their screw-up. VCS, please review this. It doesnt make sense and I'm running into roadblocks on the patient portal messaging. *Update 1* Ive left a message at the number provided. The message states someone will get back to me in a few days. *Update 2* VCS continues to give excuses about how this is not their fault. I received two phone calls in regards to this issue. Phone call 1 was dismissive and urged me to look at the internal charity. I am required to submit personal finances so that a decision can be made to 'forgive' the balance. VCS has yet to take responsibility for this mess up and expects me to subsidize their fault for: 1) Not notifying me of a change in brand for a drug I've been receiving for years that VCS specifically knows and files paperwork with a copay assistance program 2) Not notifying me of a denial of benefits in a timely manner so that the alternative copay assistance program could be utilized. VCS waited three months to apply to the original copay assistance program, meaning that even though they administer my anticancer treatments, they too were unaware of the generic vs brand issue. I had to call the copay assistance program personally to figure out what was going on since VCS would not give updates, either in writing or speech, leading to me finding out that the benefits had been denied. Only when I pressed VCS to supply the NDCs so that it could be covered was I told that benefits had been denied. Had VCS been timely and transparent the losses could have been minimized through an application in the generic's copay program. Someone at VCS needs to take responsibility for this. A statement of error and coverage of erroneous charges would go a long way, rather than their current practice of victim blaming. VCS has given a deadline of two weeks to submit the financial disclosure form. That's a nice double standard, they can be as slow as they want on notifying me about denied benefits but demand patients to get in line quickly.

The worst part about growing up is breaking away from the comforts of your parents' insurance plan…read more It is because of this, I have spent the past eight years avoiding getting a follow up appointment with an oncologist because I did not want to go through the pain of finding a new doctor who I could possible dislike. Dr. Thomas Butler came highly recommended to me by my doctor at One Medical Group and I am so glad I decided to take a chance to visit him despite the bad Yelp reviews the practice received (mostly for another doctor). Perhaps I am wearing rose-colored glasses since I am in complete remission and was only in for a consultation but I thoroughly enjoyed my time speaking with Dr. Butler. I have never met a doctor who was so caring and took the time to work through every single question I had ALONG with cited case studies to back everything he said up. It was a good balance of academia but in an easy to understand, caring way. Hopefully I will never have to work with him in anything more than my yearly checkups but if something does happen, I am 100% positive that I would feel comfortable under his watchful eye. Why four stars? + I went to the Virginia Hospital location which is a bit confusing to navigate. The information desk of the hospital was super rude to not just me but others as well. She definitely seemed more interested in cutting her coupons (no, really) than helping others. It looks like she may have been a volunteer though so I guess you get what you pay for? + While I was able to book my appointment easily, I felt like my communication between the front desk of the practice while efficient was a bit gruff/unprofessional. Dr. Kula, my hematologist, is not only incredibly calming, but her problem solving resulted in me getting an actual diagnosis after many specialists and diagnostic tests showed no specific cause, despite how thorough the other specialists as. When I first went to Dr. Kula, I was frustrated and worried and she turned my worries around, telling me we would get a solution. She seemed attuned to me, kmoldgable about my case, and was incredibly efficient without me feeling as if I'd been rushed. After ten months of testing, I was so relieved to have an answer, and four years later, Dr. Kula still inspires my complete confidence. As we all know, the doctor is only a part of the process, but in this case, the entire staff, from front desk, to nurses, to techs, have all been fantastic. No huge delays in appointments. In fact, I think every single appointment has run a few minutes early. Questions and concerns are answered in detail, blood draws are painless (no, seriously!) and it is great that they have an in-house lab, so in the short few minutes between blood draw and appointment, the doctor has updated and to the moment red and white counts, etc. I've spent most of my time in the infusion center, since my iron replenishment is usually an all-day affair, and this has allowed me to meet some great folks, as well as being able to observe the flow of the infusion area. The infusion area is one big room, with a nurses' station at one end, several offices, including scheduling, I believe, scattered throughout. On one end of the room is a smalll kitchen area with soft drinks, animal crackers, and the like, for patients and caregivers alike. There are two bathrooms, very clean and well appointed. Patients and a caregiver for each, if the patient has brought one) sit across an aisle, and the chairs are close enough to foster communication, if desired, but far enough apart to offer a bit of privacy. There are several televisions suspended above each row, but I haven't seen them turned on at any time. There is a good selection of magazines, and also a bookshelf where you can take or bring a book to donate. There are mostly adult genre paperbacks (mysteries and romance). Most patients seem to be on their tablets during their infusions, utilizing the wi-fi, which is at perfectly reasonable speed for web surfing. As I haven't tried streaming on the wi-if, I can't comment on how that speed might be. The infusion center is sunny and pleasant, and the nurses are thoroughly and wholly patient focused. Nurses are assigned to a "row" of patients seated in chairs across an aisle from each other and the nursing staff freely offer an extra hand if several patients need assistance at the same time. The nurses in this section are so soothing, explaining every step of the process and how long each segment is expected to take. While side effects are mentioned, they aren't emphasized, and through the process, the nurses were always only a few short steps away. If you'll be there for some time, the center is very centrally located, with a large Wegmans grocery store a short distance away, among many other shops.

My first impression of her was great. She made me feel very comfortable and she answered all the questions I had. So far I haven't had any bad experience at this facility. I would recommend anyone to Dr. Kula if you're looking for a hematologist in this area.
