From a design stand point, I found them unimaginative. And their business process/business ethics…read morenot transparent. After 1/2 hr initial meeting for full home redesign and ADU addition, Stewart Mayer insisted on walking off with printed drawings. Within days, in good faith I sent him electronic version to help him with design. Even though the other architects did not ask for drawings to take home in order to come up with some prelim costs. He came back with 2 scribbled ideas I shared with him from another architect. When asked if I could talk to some references, his response - "our policy with these requests is to facilitate those calls with the understanding from the potential client that they are prepared to retain our firm contingent upon a favorable conversation. Hopefully that is the case for you, and if so we'd be happy to put you in touch with one of our current clients who has been through design and permitting phases and is now under construction". Shocked someone would ask for that commitment after finding him on yelp. An experienced architect who has no previous references happy to share experience of his work? An architect who thinks asking for references if not a norm in the process? The process of vetting out architects could take months. He was insistent on needing my plans for redesign discussion purposes but he scribbled 2 ideas from another architect. Watch out this guy had no good ideas while taking plans to generate ideas. Violating copy right law is a federal offense. thank you Yelp for having a platform to share experiences

Esther YELP…read more SM-designbuild was referred to me by a friend that had great success working with Stew and his company on their home remodel. As a single woman I was a bit nervous about renovating my condo as I'd heard so many scary stories about how things can go wrong with contractors, but my experience with SM-designbuild was great. The design phase was fun and painless; they listened closely to my needs and came up with great ideas I hadn't even considered. They priced the project early on in the design phase and I was relieved to find that the initial estimate was very close to the final cost. The quality of their work was excellent and I'm happy to report that they finished the job ahead of schedule! You can't go wrong with SM-designbuild. I would use them again in a heart beat and would refer them to all my friends.

Terrible construction company!!!…read more To a potential customer: be aware that they hire subcontractors and never show up to the job unless there is a major problem. On top of that they call their customers stupid and c*ck suckers. To potential contractors: do not do any work for this company without up front payment. They will lead you on and try to make you do work knowing they are not going to pay you and give any excuse to not pay you. They are lazy, make you buy your own materials/tools, and will not reimburse anything you have to spend personally. I have never dealt with a contractor that doesn't know how to read a blue print or that doesn't care about the quality of work they put out. Very disgraceful company!!! They still owe me $2250 and refuse to pay. DO NOT WORK FOR OR HIRE THIS COMPANY THEIR MORALS ARE GARBAGE!!! They also don't care about black mold they will tell their subcontractors to cover it up and not say anything. They lost a 50 store remodel contract in Colorado because of their poor quality and carelessness. Edit: It has now been a year since then and they still haven't paid me. My business was not able to recover because they conned me into two months of work without pay. I still paid the guys that worked for me but my business failed after 8 years and I was forced to get a regular job. This is a heartless company and I hope someone sees this before contracting them.

We were replacing a broken toilet ourselves, but removed the old one to find that the setting in…read morethe floor was completely borked. There was no actual flange at all, just a repair flange and it was set below the level of the flooring and filled in around with a mess of some kind of caulk or filler to try and raise the level up. Making this right was way out of our league, so we called MasterCraft to help us out. They confirmed our suspicions that this was messed up six ways from Sunday and talked through the process of cleaning out the filler, chipping away the concrete, and refilling it with a clean setting of concrete so they could set a proper flange 1/4" above the flooring and for a reasonable price considering how terrible the setup was. They immediately set up an appointment to return the next day. While they were there for the estimate, they offered a free inspection of the plumbing in the rest of the house, which I took to be a fishing expedition for more "problems" they could "fix" for more money, but such was not the case. They found one minor issue, said it could probably wait a few years, and even fixed another minor issue they found for free, then said everything else looked good. Startling honesty and helpfulness! From my call for help, they had folks out to check things out in about two hours, and the work was completed less than 24 hours after that. For the level of work done, an incredible turn time, IMO. All told, we had 5 different techs in our house between inspection and repair, and every single one was friendly, competent, and respectful of our home. While I'm not eager to *need* their services, if I do, MasterCraft Plumbing has definitely earned repeat customers here!

Subject: Unresolved property damage and failure to honor warranty…read more I am writing this review to share my experience with Mastercraft Plumbers Inc. regarding a project that resulted in irreparable damage to my bathtub. While the company performed the initial task of removing a corroded screw, their technician's negligence resulted in significant, irreparable damage to the bathtub. Despite a written warranty guaranteeing workmanship, the company refused to restore the tub to its original condition, instead proposing an inadequate "refinishing" remedy that did not meet professional standards. After months of attempting to reach a professional resolution, I was forced to pursue this matter in Small Claims Court. On June 8, 2026, the Superior Court of California ruled in my favor, confirming that the company failed to meet its obligations and awarding a judgment for the full cost of the necessary replacement. I am sharing this factual account to assist other consumers in their due diligence. I have attached the Court's Minute Order and photographs of the damage for transparency. I am posting this as an addendum to address the owner's response. I wish to clarify that the facts of this matter were adjudicated in the Superior Court of California (Case #25SC04822C). On June 8, 2026, the Court ruled in my favor and awarded a judgment for the costs of repair, rejecting the defendant's claims. My review is based on these documented findings, and I stand by the facts presented. I have attached the Court's Minute Order for transparency to allow future consumers to make informed decisions based on the official record.
