It caused an enormous amount of stress for all of us over the period of 2 years. However, the moment Mike Campbell from Miller, Miller & Canby came into the picture, the great weight on our shoulders instantly lifted.  Mike was extremely responsive, answered all my emails thoughtfully and thoroughly, met in person when I felt like I needed to have a quick meeting, and in short, I FULLY TRUSTED HIM. This was my first court case in my 50 years, and as a fairly impatient person, I learned that there were multiple steps we had to go through, and B could not be done before waiting to see how A played out. I think legal matters just come with so many unknowns as well, which makes everything more stressful for the layperson. It was only the full trust Mike inspired that allowed me to be patient with the process, and not have a breakdown along the way! During our lengthy mediations with the complainant, there were 3 total respondents, each with our own lawyers. It was obvious (even to my parents for whom English is a second language) that Mike was the smartest man in the room. The other lawyers threw some ideas and opinions out but Mike was clearly the leader of the group, and the respondents and their respective lawyers, followed his gentle and professional lead and pace.  It might be cliche to say that I really hope I never see him again... but if we ever find ourselves in another legal situation, I know that it will be OK as long as we have Mike Campbell on our side. I believe he will always have the best interests of his clients in mind.

It involved some partial rollovers into qualified plan from IRA preceding the conversion. I had done a bit of research but wanted an expert to validate the specifics of my situation. While other attorneys I've met with in the past on other topics have a free consultation to validate they are in a position to help; Eric charges $250 for the initial conversation which is an in person meeting. He doesn't offer a first 5-10 minute phone discussion to ensure he is a fit or the need. After about a week, he called to say what I was specifically trying to do wouldn't work. I requested him to send any specific reference to the law section; IRS publication; or articles as his evaluation was contrary to what I was finding myself. He said he would send me something, but never got back to me. There was some additional up and back with questions as I sent him some IRS material after he never got back to me per above. Eric is not responsive, going weeks without a reply. He emailed me on Nov 9th apologizing that he'd been on a big project, and would reply soon. It is now Dec 2nd and still not heard. My perception is that my question was not in Eric's wheelhouse, familiarity with current rulings regarding rollovers to qualified plans from an IRA of earnings, leaving the basis behind in an IRA. In the end I felt like I wasted time and $250 without clarity. To his credit, at least he never asked for more than the initial consultation fee. But regardless I still feel as though I don't have a solid answer and would he would have been better for him to simply decline to engage on the topic during the initial meeting if this wasn't the type of thing he could get to resolve quickly or he didn't have bandwidth.

Eric kindly also answered a lot of estate planning questions for my dad, and furthermore recommended my dad use an attorney where he lives, instead of keeping the business for himself. He also explained why we do not, in fact need a trust. I also really like that his flat fee included him retaining a copy of our notarized will, just in case we ever have a house fire or the like.
