I was first requested to have a mandatory paid initial consultation session to go over my legal help needed. I was introduced to Julie S. during this session. After describing my specific case & needs, she informed me that Geller Law can handle my case. What followed was months of emotional stress & redundant conversations with the staff of this firm that yielded no results. It became clear to me that they didn't know how to legally handle my case. Some staff members were argumentative & appeared trying to take advantage of this emotional situation for me. There were redundant conversations that I was later billed for. I concluded that this firm is not the choice that can handle my case professionally. I terminated my work with them. Initial cost was $5000 - which had to be paid out of pocket, up front, and probably was a red flag we ignored. Got hit with another $2000 court fee that I don't remember hearing about, for a total cost of $7000 to file the 6-8 documents that the court required. At nearly $1000 per page of information - which we had to already provide, seems a steep cost for their efforts. Not only was this was a lengthy (over 18 month) and expensive endeavor dealing with the additional legal issues was very draining.

It involved some partial rollovers into qualified plan from IRA preceding the conversion. I had done a bit of research but wanted an expert to validate the specifics of my situation. While other attorneys I've met with in the past on other topics have a free consultation to validate they are in a position to help; Eric charges $250 for the initial conversation which is an in person meeting. He doesn't offer a first 5-10 minute phone discussion to ensure he is a fit or the need. After about a week, he called to say what I was specifically trying to do wouldn't work. I requested him to send any specific reference to the law section; IRS publication; or articles as his evaluation was contrary to what I was finding myself. He said he would send me something, but never got back to me. There was some additional up and back with questions as I sent him some IRS material after he never got back to me per above. Eric is not responsive, going weeks without a reply. He emailed me on Nov 9th apologizing that he'd been on a big project, and would reply soon. It is now Dec 2nd and still not heard. My perception is that my question was not in Eric's wheelhouse, familiarity with current rulings regarding rollovers to qualified plans from an IRA of earnings, leaving the basis behind in an IRA. In the end I felt like I wasted time and $250 without clarity. To his credit, at least he never asked for more than the initial consultation fee. But regardless I still feel as though I don't have a solid answer and would he would have been better for him to simply decline to engage on the topic during the initial meeting if this wasn't the type of thing he could get to resolve quickly or he didn't have bandwidth.
