As a preface to my review, let it be known that I have never had an affiliation with the office of…read moreSusan Bosler, DC. I write this review as a private citizen, neither as a peer nor a competitor since I have retired and when in practice, never shared a patient with Dr. Bosler's office, since her office is located an hour from my previous practice location. I am a chiropractor with 45-years of experience, but treating scoliosis is not my specialty. After a search on Google, I decided to take my daughter to Dr. Bosler's office for the treatment of scoliosis, since her website claims she is certified to treat scoliosis through CLEAR Scoliosis Institute. During a later conversation I had with the CLEAR Scoliosis Institute, I was informed that Dr. Bosler "was not certified" and that she is not following the protocols as taught by them. I accompanied my daughter for the first two visits. During the initial visit, we agreed that since I was a chiropractor, I would perform the spinal adjustments and she would perform the scoliosis protocols. In spite of our agreement, Dr. Bosler continued to adjust my daughter, claiming that it is the protocol of CLEAR Scoliosis Institute that the spinal adjustment be done just prior to the scoliosis treatment. I contacted CLEAR via email and they replied, "Adjusting the night before CLEAR treatment should be acceptable. There shouldn't be a timeframe you need to work within." Dr. Bosler uses manual, hands on adjusting technique to rotate or "twist the spine, which is not recommended by CLEAR. According to them, the protocols for spinal adjusting "do not involve the chiropractor using his hands to rotate or 'twist' the patient's head. Rather, advanced mechanical adjusting instruments are also performed on the back, hips, and other areas." The reason for this is that "most scoliosis patients have ligament laxity/instability that manual adjusting would aggravate. A contraindication of manual adjusting is ligament instability. By using an instrument, it is more effectively moving only one segment instead of aggravating the ligament instability and moving multiple areas." The technique I have used for my entire career more closely aligns with CLEAR's protocols than Dr. Bosler's, yet she would not allow my adjustments to be included as part of the protocol. I accompanied my daughter for her first two visits and observed on the second visit that the scoliosis treatment was positioning my daughter's spine in the opposite direction, which was making the curve worse. I pointed that out to the therapist and she called the doctor in. As Dr. Bosler observed the patient's positioning I asked her if I may ask her a question, to which she abruptly replied, "Not now." At the directive of Dr. Bosler, the therapist made some corrections to the positioning of my daughter, but she was still the positioned in the wrong position. In a later phone conversation I had with Dr. Bosler, she continued to defend the positioning of my daughter. To clarify Dr. Bosler's treatment protocol, I contacted CLEAR via email and an instructor replied they were "confused why that would be done" and should "not be done on purpose" and recommended "asking the doctor what the reasoning behind it was." Prior to starting treatment, It was also agreed upon that any rehab supplies or hardware that were necessary I would purchase those items since, as a professional, I receive them at cost, saving 50+% over what Dr. Bosler's office charges, yet they continued pushing me to purchase rehab equipment from them at retail. I was unable to accompany my daughter for her third visit at which time Dr. Bosler informed my daughter that I was no longer welcome in the office. Professionally, If Dr. Bosler had an issue with me, she should have spoken directly to me. My daughter told me that confrontation put her in a very awkward position. In my four-and-half decades as a chiropractor, I have never banned anyone from my office for any reason, whether it be a patient, relative, or guest, especially when simply asked to justify my procedures. After spending over $800 out of pocket for three visits, my money was welcome, but I was not. Following being banned from Dr. Bosler's office, I did have the opportunity to discuss these issues with Dr. Bosler by phone and she continued to defend everything she had done for my daughter. When I informed her that she put my daughter in an extremely awkward position by discussing my dismissal from her office, she rudely and unprofessionally replied, "You know what, I am done" and abruptly hung up. I possess a record of all emails of my correspondence with CLEAR technique and recordings of the phone conversations with them as well as recordings of my conversations with Dr. Bosler that document this review.
