We ordered about 12-15 trees from them and they were shipped late and arrived in dreadful condition with many showing extreme stress. We planted them all the day they arrived while soaking them in water hoping to revive them. I will be surprised if even half make it through this year. Several show only life at the bottom near the graft so we aren't sure if it's the roots growing out or if it's the actual tree growing out. We ordered from a variety of nurseries and these were by far the worst of any nursery. Don't expect them to do much either. Their customer service is worse than their plants they sell. read more

It appears the Owner or Partner was out and unable to respond to my recent request for assistance. I had thought I wasn't getting a response to e-mailed inquiries, but that was incorrect. The Nursery Management decided to refund what I paid for a jujube tree that just never thrived. It took awhile, and I followed suggestions from Michael there, to try to get the tree to grow properly. It just wasn't possible. I'm grateful the management decided to issue a refund. Just be aware, some of their jujube trees may be purchased from another wholesaler. The tree was improperly pruned, such that side branches never came in. But once I had communicated back & forth with Michael and management there, a fair decision was made, and I'm satisfied. I hope the company will work with the wholesaler on any potential quality control issues. That being said, it's hard to personally inspect each and every tree received and sent out during dormant season. read more

We purchased 4 Chestnut trees last spring and only 1 survived the winter. When we called the nursery, they said their guarantee was only for the first 4 months. So, apparently they do not stand behind what they are selling. 75% of my order did not live for a year. We are talking about trees, not a little plant. I did the same thing with all 4 and 1 is flourishing and the other 3 are deader than dead. I asked if they simply would maybe give me a discount if I were to replace the 3 that died - they said NO! One chestnut tree does me no good as it needs another tree to cross polinate. DON'T buy from these people - they send you products and then are done with you. No customer service whatsoever. read more

Way back in December I ordered five Carpatian walnut trees for delivery April 1. (Order Number: 151866) The trees arrived, as requested, as close to April 1 as possible, which was April 3, which as it turned out was a bit better than April 1. However, April proved, as T.S. Eliot noted, the "cruelest month." Here in the far NE corner of Oregon, we had about 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground the day the trees arrived (It had snowed all day on April 1...) ! Temps were in the 20's (Brrrrrr!) So we stored the trees in their box and wrapping, in a covered and sheltered area next to the barn. It remained unseasonably cold, with more snow for two weeks! We kept our fingers crossed and checked often to be sure the roots were moist. (They were--you did a great job of packing!!) We were finally able to plant them on April 22nd when the weather began to realize that, for gawds sake, it was supposed to be SPRING! We planted the five walnut trees amid some widely-spaced, century-old heritage apple trees, so they could get some encouragement from the elders. The pioneer orchard has also been invaded by an encroaching forest of hawthorns, which I'm removing with some degree of fervor. I'm very happy to report that despite the added month of forced dormancy, all five of those walnuts are growing well and each has produced about 6" of growth on their crowns already with plenty of leaves. The trees were a gift in honor of my husband and my 5th anniversary together. We are both a healthy 75 years old, and those trees will give us some added incentive to lead healthy lives so we can harvest their walnuts some years in the future. I ordered one Carmine Goumi, and it was received in great condition. The packaging was very well done, and the plant was not dried out, and just getting ready to bud, the plant was larger than i was expecting so very happy with the job Burnt Ridge did on this. My only regret was not ordering two plants. I will be checking them out again. read more

On of my favorite nurseries in the country, specializing in edible plants. I've purchased a couple of gooseberries, Hinnomaki Red and Black Velvet, some apples, some plums, and some seaberries. We live in Upstate NY, and the plants seem to struggle a bit with the late frosts, cold winters, and early spring warm-ups. They also don't like our heavy clay soil. I've found that I can amend/improve the soil, plant on hillsides, and take other mitigations to keep them alive, but I'm yet to see whether or not I'll see any fruit from them. It can take up to a decade, so keeping my fingers crossed. So far, the gooseberries have done the best, and there's a single plum on one of the plum trees. read more

There is definitely a price advantage to buy bare root, but it's not perfect. I know I would pay way more at my local nursery and just as they are imperfect, so is mail order. However, BRN has been great for the last couple of years and I will still order online from them two states away. The selection is great with lots of natives and nuanced choices from abroad. The service has been great with letting me know if something changes (we are talking about live plants); however I've definitely received a mislabeled mystery plant via mail (still awaiting it to reveal itself). Regardless, I'm glad to know I can order a ton of plants for less and worry less about the deer annihilating the one plant I bought at a premium; rather, relish in that the deer missed most of the many plants I ordered for the same price. read more

I received the 2 kiwi vines this week. Boy, am I impressed with their size and health, especially after a long trip to Georgia. Those were about the best looking, well packaged plants I have ever received, and I have ordered dozens upon dozens from other mail-order nurseries over the years. I have placed two orders with Burnt Ridge. Their communication could be a lot better. Some plants (on my second order) were removed from my order and they shipped it incomplete without notifying me. Because of the costs of shipping I might have liked to adjust or cancel the entire order. I was not given this option. I assumed that the plants that were withheld because they were out of stock. As it turns out, the plants were still in stock (at a higher price). Burnt Ridge should have honored my order as placed or notified me that there was a pricing mistake and given me other options. I emailed them my concerns but received no reply. Their plants are very good quality & they have some hard to find items, but this issue will make this my last order with them. read more

Unfortunately, they sent me two very dead trees. When I advised them that the trees were DOA, they refunded the cost of the trees ($10) but refused to refund the shipping ($23.50) because they don't refund shipping in the summer months. (Something which they neglected to note when I placed the order and that, despite their insistence that it is on their website, I have yet to find.) I have requested a refund through PayPal, but I don't know if I will get it. In addition, the co-owner of the nursery basically accused me of doing something wrong, noting that they had sent those types of trees to many, many people with no issues. Unfortunately, I have no godlike powers and can't bring plants from the dead. Other than that, there is nothing I could have done to make them grow. read more

Just received this year's catalog for this wonderful place. We have a 40 acre farm near silverton in the willamette valley with a couple of acres of aging out English walnuts. This place has the best collection of nuts trees around. Everything that we have planted from this place has out performed a couple of much larger places with fewer choices. And a bonus is the opportunity to speak to a person who has time to talk, knows her plants and is pleasant. A huge deal in my experience. Highly recommended read more

A beautiful farm! I was lucky enough to get a private tour of the 23 acre farm on a warm Washington day, and was able to see the great conditions of all of the plants & trees. In addition to meeting the lovely farm workers and receiving a warm welcome from the owners, I was able to try their fresh hazelnuts, chestnuts, apples, and even their new wine! Of the wine I highly suggest the kiwi-Asian pear and the blackberry grape. Finally, I bought one of the charming, small monkey puzzle tree starts, and several months later it has grown and kept it's healthy glow. I am very satisfied with my experiences with the Burnt Ridge Nursery and highly recommend their plants, harvests, and wine! read more

This company started sending me catalogs after I ordered a tree, and I emailed them three times over 10 days to remove me from the mailing list, and they completely ignored all of my emails. I then called the company, and the receptionist (Ben) was extremely condescending, and refused to let me speak to a manager or the owner. When I explained my complaint, he just said that they're busy and he completely dismissed my frustration with being ignored for 10 days, again refusing to let me talk to a manager or the owner. I cancelled an outstanding order on the spot, and I'll never buy from this company again. read more

The bare-root Parkland apple tree arrived in Anchorage in 3 days, well-packed and undamaged. It is a beautifully-shaped tree with substantial roots. Within a week of immediate planting the buds have started to pop. When I told a local nursery owner of my search for a Parkland, after he showed me what he had, he selflessly advised me that I'd be happiest with the Parkland. I'm sure he was right! read more

Numerous orders placed with Burnt Ridge these past couple of years and I have never not been impressed. Expert packing keeps damage minimal but more important, the quality of their products far surpass anything I have purchased from the big name mail order nurseries, and I have purchased from them all. A bare root Carmine Jewel cherry bush/tree I ordered arrived in spring with roots almost as long as the tree and an Indian Blood peach was equal in quality. after an overnight soak in water for the roots, both began sprouting leaves and even a few blossoms within days and are now thriving. Same story with Lingonberry, Salmonberry, Thimbleberry and other plants I have purchased from Burnt Ridge. The Lingonberry plants were more than double the size with much larger roots than similar offerings from others purchased in the past. They are also quick to respond, should you have questions. I recommend Burnt Ridge without hesitation. read more

I received some currant/gooseberry plants which leafed out very quickly, but then started going south. I emailed a picture to Burnt Ridge, asking what was going wrong with the plants and literally got the response 'I have no idea.' Really? You guys are a nursery that specializes in plants and you have no idea what's going wrong with a plant you sent me? The other plants I ordered which did survive are showing really mediocre growth. Terrible plants. Terrible customer service. I'll be shopping elsewhere and telling my any fellow gardeners to stay away. read more

Last winter I ordered several small plants, a good sized chinese haw and some seed from burnt ridge. When I received my package it was warming up here (Texas) and I planted it all. All of the plants survived and most of the seed came up. Awesome. I will order from them again! read more

This company is a joke. I placed an order for 6 berry plants and they accepted the order. waited 4 weeks with no communications from them about the order. Took them 6 weeks to ship and then informed me that they only had 5 of the plants. When they shipped, they told me they only had 4 of the plants, and they changed the plant from what I ordered to another one. When the plants arrived, they were in a 4 ft long box. They largest plant was about 2 ft long and the other 3 were less than 6 in. Needless to say, the little ones really got banged up and broken pretty bad; 2 ended up dying within 2 weeks. Upon calling them back for a refund of the plants that died, they did agree to refund my money and ship something next year. Also inquired about the fact that they were all supposed to be 2 year plants and it was obvious that 3 of them were 1 year plants. They wanted to be argumentative on the phone. I usually, never write negative reviews....BUT this company needs to be avoided. read more

I ordered a fig tree from them, and unfortunately was out of town for a full week after it arrived.  The plant was in great shape when I finally got back home, and the root ball was still moist.  I planted it right away, and it took right away to it's new surroundings.  Within a week it started to get new buds and is thriving! This was my first time ordering from Burnt Ridge Nursery. The shipping was a bit expensive compared to other companies but the pricing on the plants was slightly less so it evened out cost wise. I bought 15 raspberry plants/bare roots (3 different types), 2 sizes of goumi plants (one listed as fruit bearing age), two types of cranberry plants (one listed as large). The size on the larger plants I bought were worth the extra cost. My larger goumi already has fruit after only being planted for a few months and my cranberry plant has about 2 feet in diameter of growth. All of the plants arrived healthy and true to described size (unlike some other larger companies I've purchased from previously). I soaked the bare root raspberry plants and put a bit of rooting hormone on the roots. Everything was planted about two months ago and is thriving. I will definitely order from them again. I recommend this nursery to anyone looking for a good value. read more

Very disappointed. Their website descriptions are very deceiving. I ordered 4 different blueberry plants and 25 strawberry plants. I ordered the gallon size blueberry plants (the biggest available on their site at the time) it gave the impression they would fruit this year and they would arrive in planted pots thats what they all said in the description. None came in pots. They arrived squished into a small long thin box. Barely any root system and no green leaves. The strawberry plants were squished in the bottom of the same box again barely any roots also the impression theyd be old enough to produce this year. I immediately contacted them when I opened the box and they said the gallon pot description is just what they grow them in the nursery. I complained further because for the price I paid I could have got actual potted ones locally or at another online store that I later contacted and guaranteed their potted description meant they'd arrive in pots. The blueberry plants are so small they will definitely not fruit this year and half thr strawberry plants were completely dead. They didnt offer a refund of any kind and actually didnt respond back to my last email stating their website was deceiving and how unhappy I was with my order. read more

I was looking for a certain Persimmon scions to graft onto an existing tree. I found that that particular Persimmon scions were available on their website. So I placed an order for 4 scions in December 2020 which were going to be shipped in February 2021. Found that for their shipping is flat rate for up to 35 sticks. So I included one scion from another type of persimmon. After a month, I found that same scions were also available at another nursery. I did not want to cancel that order and called them. Spoke to a nice lady who reassured me that if the order was taken, I will be getting scions. Later in February, I got an invoice that they are not able to send the needed scions and will be shipping one scion which I had ordered along with main scions and still charge full shipping. There was no explanation whey they are not shipping the main scions. I called and was told that there is no guarantee that order will be fulfilled as they have not idea what their inventory will be. What type of nursery are they when they have no idea of their inventory and why do they keep taking orders when they cannot fulfill it? Because of their poor practices, I have to wait untill next year to graft my tree and have set me back by a year. read more

I am leading an effort to establish a hardwood plantation in Wyoming and made Burnt Ridge Nursery a part of this effort with a $1400 order of Shagbark Hickory and Skookum and Sleeping Giant Chestnut seedlings. I gave this order every chance. I wish I had done a detailed inspection of the seedlings upon pickup this past spring. I was expecting to pick up dormant seedlings from cold storage but instead all were well past bud break and quite leafy. All our other dormant stock from other suppliers was picked up well prior to bud break. The shagbark hickory seedlings were quite a disappointment. All but 2 had the taproot cut between 4" and 6" below soil surface. The other 2 were J Roots. Of the 72 seedlings delivered, we have 11 surviving at this time. It looked like the roots had been cut for some time before pickup as they appeared to be aged cuts. The original order was for 150 of the seedlings. We were advised during the winter of crop failure and the inability to fulfill the original order. It is apparent why now. You just can't sever the taproot that shallow and expect survival. The various chestnut deliveries also were problematic. While the survival rate is much better than the hickory, around 50% of the seedlings had damaged terminal buds due to apparent deer browsing. As with the hickories, the chestnuts were for investment grade timber production and these damaged specimens were not suitable for this purpose. All these trees were planted three days after pickup. We gave these specimens more care than our other species trying to increase the possibility of survival with far less success results. When these issues were brought to the attention of Burnt Ridge all I was received were denials and then they went dark. This is not acceptable customer service. These seedlings were also not a quality product. Seek your product elsewhere. If you are in the Northwest area, get your stock from the University of Idaho Pitkin Nursery. We've received several thousand trees from them without issue. They are on top of everything! We just wish U of I worked with Shagbark Hickory and the Chestnut hybrids. Got 6 trees today. Have done business with them for over a decade and have always been pleased with their quality. Today; however, we got a Van Cherry tree that was about 3' stick with a 1' root. Nothing more than a stick and a withered up little root. $29 for this stick. I could live with the peach tree getting 3 branches broken in their shipping. Call that pruning. But the nerve to charge $29 for a stick. It looked like it should have been tossed. But they sold it to me instead. We will baby it and see if it will survive and never do business with them again. read more

This was my first time ordering from Burnt Ridge. I live on the east coast, where it's hard to find certain varieties of fruit trees. A bit of googling led me to Burnt Ridge, and I took the plunge and ordered 2 two year old trees, one Saturn peach and one Korean pear. There was great customer service through and through. They waited to ship my trees until the weather out east warmed up. When they arrived, they were in perfect condition, and now they are happily planted and blooming in my backyard. I couldn't be happier and I wish I had more yard space to plant more of their trees. read more

A very large box arrived today heavy with plants that I ordered- and like always- Burnt Ridge did an amazing, careful job with packaging! All of my potted trees, bare-root trees and field-grown plants were safely and intelligently packed in the box- reinforced with bamboo. They put great care in the shipping- AND I am SO HAPPY with the plants themselves- big healthy root systems- healthy strong stems/trunks.
