Burnhearts is great! It's very cozy, the drinks are priced right, and the employees are very friendly. They have a variety of DJs who spin anything from space disco to old jazz. The clientele is mostly of the hipster ilk but they're the nice kind, not the snobby mean kind. I give it 5 stars since they serve hot toddys. It's absolutely essential for any Milwaukee bar worth it's salt to serve this healing concoction during the depths of the punishingly cold Wisconsin winters. read more

I'm originally from the farm country surrounding the city but I took a job in the Bay View neighborhood which is how I found out about Burnhearts. A few coworkers and I stopped by for a pint during Milwaukee Beer Week and I immediately fell in love. The clientele is usually younger but those are generally the people that love unique microbrews and imports. It has a relaxed atmosphere and a pool table, shuffle puck game, and darts. There is plenty of room to hang out at the bar or at the tables scattered throughout. Burnhearts has the best rotating beer list in the city. I am a homebrewer and a beer fanatic. Only a tiny selection of bars in the city have a comparable beer selection but they sometimes lack a knowledgeable staff or fun atmosphere. They've got more than beer here too in case your friends or significant other isn't a fan (although they might be after sampling some of what Burnhearts has on tap). read more

My friends and I came in here Tuesday night while taking a mini-vacation in Milwaukee. We all work in various aspects of the restaurant industry and wanted to get away. After some guests left from the middle of the bar, we stepped up and waited patiently to grab a drink. The bartender continued to bounce from left to right but completely ignored us. She never even acknowledged our presence really. We waited for more than 10 minutes and finally decided to leave. Apparently, this bar is just for the regular crowd. read more

I came here for a friend's birthday on a Saturday night. Selection of drinks and beer was great and people were alright. It was crowded and seating for a group our size was difficult, but hey it worked out that we all found a little cozy spot. It's a chill place to hang out. Perhaps the beer selection is really what you come for, but I must have missed something in the element of the atmosphere. Could've been the night, so I will give it another try. My guy and I went to Milwaukee for the weekend and so we wanted a cool dive bar just like the ones in Chicago (home) and we stumbled upon Burnhearts! It felt just like home and we loved that. Man, Burnhearts. In a town full of really solid bars, you are by far my favorite. You know that guy that's always screaming "Freebird!" at concerts because he's just so into that song and Lynyrd Skynyrd that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks about it? I'm kinda like that with Burnhearts. Even if Burnhearts gets over exposed and people stop thinking it's cool, I'm still totally going to dig it. Thirty years from now I wanna be that guy that goes into other bars and screams out "Burnhearts!" We're gonna sit around a table and talk about the good times we had there. "Hey, you guys remember when we had those super solid drinks at Burnhearts?" to which the question is "Which time?". EVERYTIME is super solid. I wanna be that old guy in the retirement home rocking the Burnhearts trucker hat in the summer, and the Burnhearts beanie in the winter. I'll tell my grand kids about the ridiculous tap list and the lust-worthy bottle list. The bourbon barrel brandy old fashioneds. The brandy slushes. I'll be nostalgic of all of the Mittenfests and Pabst Street Parties. I'll think back on the great bartenders. I want to be like "Freebird!" guy. I don't care what you think about it, I love it. It's tough to go against the grain sometimes but with Burnhearts I must be missing something. Perhaps this is a place people like because other people like. Or perhaps I don't appreciate it. But Burnhearts was nothing special at all to me. The bartender wasn't friendly. The place is small and divey, and there's nothing too unique about it. They do have a solid draft beer list, but the drinks aren't all that cheap, especially for Bay View. I paid $12.50 for two drinks, on a Wednesday, in Bay View. The music selection (perhaps it was just that night) was loud and intruding. I can understand and dig the whole not having at TV thing, so people can talk to eachother and have conversation rather than distraction. I get it. But the loud music made it hard to do that. I didn't check out the back which I heard can be cool, perhaps I should have, but it didn't seem to be "open". When reading the reviews of this place, perhaps I've missed something. But I didn't feel welcome at this bar, I felt like I shouldn't be there. I'll take my business elsewhere, but to everyone who loves Burnhearts - you can have my spot. read more

Here is where I turn into a blubbering fool. I absolutely love this place. I am as beer nerdy as beer nerds come, and they always have something on tap that makes me a bit giddy. It was a lovely afternoon and after a hike, a friend and I decided it was beer thirty. As is the norm with Burnie's, one of their taps made me give myself a high five. Three Floyds Zombie Dust. This stuff is beyond good. The bartender (I believe his name was Christian?) was an affable fellow and knew his stuff. I'm a little nervous that I'll be moving within walking distance, because this is the kind of place I could find myself way too often. If you love trying new beers while sporting your favorite plaid button-down (and I know I unashamedly do), this place is for you! Low lit, comfortable, and woodsy. I find myself expecting to see the Brawny guy smoking a pipe outside. Often it's just a thin pale dude smoking American Spirits, but I'm sure he can lift a Lincoln Log. Parking isn't hard to find--always a plus when you're coming from another neighborhood. Or Canada. Did I mention the beers? Only a few minor setbacks: it's always too warm in there, and I find myself sweating like a hipster on a unicycle. The bar is super hard to get an order in because patrons tend to flock (especially if you're short a soft-spoken). Prepare to squeeze uncomfortably or take a tall, loud friend. And the clientele is around mid to late twenties with millennial indie music, so if you're looking for a quiet conversation, especially on a weekend (other than texting across the table to each other), this might not be the place. read more

This place has multiple things going for it....It's in Bay View, it's on a corner in the middle of a neighborhood, amazing craft beer list. These are all things that are important to me in a local watering hole. Why is this bar so good? I'm not exactly sure, but it is. I visited during a recent trip to Wisconsin. It's kind of a divey little hut, with colorful Christmas lights and nooks and crannies, plus classic 60's furniture and a shuffleboard table. Cool enough, right? Except that the beer selection is what puts it off the charts. They have rotating taps of carefully selected beers. Last time I was there they had New Glarus Enigma on tap! Whoa! Let's start with I am only giving this place two stars because of the stellar beer selection. Otherwise I would give it a zero for the fact that when trying to order an old fashioned, which by the way, we were told they make really good ones here, the bartender basically told us in a roundabout way that we were delusional to even think that she would take the time to make us a drink because they were just too busy. I'm sorry, I have lived in Wisconsin all of my life, and no matter what bar I have been to, whatever you order, if the bar has it in stock the bartender will make it, no matter how busy they are. I like this bar enough. Situated in an easy to find location, plenty of tap options and friendly/efficient bartenders. I make a point to head to most of their block parties. I wish they'd put more effort into the food options, but Classic Slice is awesome in my book. Burnhearts will always have a special place in my own heart. This is a style of bar that exemplifies Milwaukee: a lower converted to a bar that is dimly lit with christmas lights and funky bar decor including red glowing anatomical hearts. This place has its own funky character, with wonderful wall art and a boob-tastic collection of classic pin-ups near the bathrooms. Aside from the general atmosphere I love the expansive collection of regional microbrews, both bottles and taps, and great music selection, mostly contemporary indie rock. They occasionally have CD release parties (Animal Collective is the one I attended) here hosted by the Wisconsin specific indie-blog Muzzle of Bees and they often have a guy DJing in the corner. Lastly, it's my favorite shuffle-puck spot in the city. Definitely my favorite bar here! read more

I really like burnhearts. Good music, people and atmosphere. I always find myself looking at the texture of the hair of the girl in the art piece on the back wall. And they have shuffleboard!! With a chalkboard to make up funny team names and keep track of how many times you crush your opponents. I love the patio in the summer too.
