Books genealogy and…read moreOtis The first Norwich library was built in 1849 with money donated by Deacon (Joseph) Otis; Like most of the libraries back then it was a subscription library and only became a free library in 1891. The old Greek Revival building was pretty cool but it was just to small to accommodate the growing community and so a new, larger but more ordinary building was built in the 1960s. Over the years the new building also proved to be inadequate so the library managed to receive a 4.5 million dollar grant in 2004 for renovations and improvements. This was the largest library grant in state's history and certain turned the library into a wonderful place to research and visit. Unfortunately over the last few years money has been scarce and the library has been losing funding, resulting in loss of hours and programs. Hopefully this will change in the near future. Lot of open space, cool places to sit and a extremely useful local history and genealogy room. A lovely area for kids and even a pleasant little courtyard outside. Not a historical or stunning building like lots of the many of the old libraries in the area but one that has a charming and friendly atmosphere and is a library that is a very pleasant place to work, learn or just look around.

This is the tour of the newly renovated / expanded Wickham Memorial Library in East Hartford, CT…read more Located at Burnside Ave., That building opened in 1940 as a library. That building hadn't been occupied as a library for the last 5+ years. The library had a grand reopening to the public on Monday May 8. This library primarily serves patrons in neighborhoods where there's access to books at this library. As of now, there's no patron access to upstairs at this time but as more volumes will eventually be added to the collection, there will be more books upstairs and I think there will be children's room up in that level in the future. For now, there's a limited selection of materials from every subject, movies and children's books.

Books graveyards…read more and mysteries The Chaplin Town Library is a small library but that's all right because Chaplin is a small town. Only about 12,000 volumes in the library and only about 2,200 people in the town. So the ratio of books to book lovers is actually very high. The library was built in 1948 and then renovated in the year 2000 so it's actually one of the newer libraries in the state. It still has that cool small town feel with lots of colorful flowers, old benches and an ancient graveyard right next door. Even though it has all the modern amenities of a newer library, it never lets you forget that you are in a small new England town. The people I met there were as friendly and congenial as I would expect in a small town and the librarian went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Told us to sit down and relax and everyone that came in the library seemed to want to talk to us and socialize. These small town libraries are a lot more than just places for books, at one time they were the way people stayed in touch and they still serve that purpose. E-mail is great but there is nothing like talking to a person face to face. The new library is very pleasant and replaced the old William Ross library that was built way back in 1911. The previous library is still standing a ways down the street and nobody would tell me what it was used for now. Just shook their heads or laughed like it was a private joke. Hmmm. Most small New England towns have mysteries. That's one of the things that makes visiting these out of the way places so cool. You never know what you are going to find. The new Chaplin Library is pretty cool but I suspect the much older Chapin Library just might be much, much, cooler still.

It's like something out of a movie set, with bits of holiday charm tucked everywhere. I'd love to see what they do in the winter. Outside has a little patio with donor's blocks (a lot seem to be for dogs), and in back by the parking area is a beautiful mural showing stages/highlights of Andover.

I used to frequent the library at Bishop's Corner around 2-3 times a week when I was in high…read moreschool. In the recent years, I haven't been as loyal. Occasionally I'll stop by when I have a book in mind that I'd like to check out. The Bishop's Corner Library is a branch of West Hartford Public Library. This is the smallest of the three libraries in town. Despite being small, there's everything here. A smaller library is so much easier to navigate. The books are well categorized, whether they're biographies, fiction or new releases. They have a quiet study area on the opposite end of the library from where the children's play area is. They have books for every child's interest. There's also computers that are marked by child's age. I stopped by the library for a specific book. It was in the new releases. It's actually a book that was released just a few months ago. And they had it at the library. You can check out with a librarian or at the self checkout. The checkout is very easy to use if you have your library card on hand. I have been going to this library for many years, I will continue to do so for many more.

There was an elevator and ramps inside the building. I visited the children's section which was all the way up the ramp behind the front desk. The children's area was nice and spacious. They had a train table, a table with a couple of toys, a toy kitchen, a puppet stage, computers/tablets, coloring station, and various of other toys. There were seats and tables. I didn't see any self checkouts, I really like those. They had a nice selection of books. Like other libraries they offer tons of resources and programs.

This is such a cute library - the parking lot is a little small, and one way so take care when…read moregoing in and out. The interior has a full children's and adult section, with a whale flying on the ceiling and display of local Amerindians. There was a lot to see beyond the regular books and media offered in a library.

BPL Atrium Library opened in August 2023 because the two libraries in Bloomfield closed for…read morerenovations in June 2023. (McMahon Wintonbury and Prosser). McMahon Wintonbury is slated to open in March 2025 and Prosser is slated to open in Summer 2025. The current temporary location is located on the Cigna campus in the former MetLife building. Don't make the same mistake as me and turn onto the wrong street, which is the location in the back of the building; it's the second street on the right. The parking lot was spacious and the building was large. Once you enter, there is a friendly library employee to the right that will give you a pass and open the gate for you. The lobby is huge with lots of natural light, tables, water fountain, and an escalator (there is an elevator too). Once you take the escalator to the second floor, the library is on the right. It's an open air library and it was spacious. It appears to be an old office with tons of cubicles too. We were greeted by a friendly librarian. The kids section was a decent size with plenty of books and toys. My kids loved the area. They also have the self checkout which is amazing and I wish my home library had it too. There was a box that prints out a story on a receipt paper, that was pretty awesome. This is a nice temporary location but I look forward to visiting the newly renovated libraries once they open.
