Most of the structure of this former junior high school and later adult education centre has been…read moredemolished. A small office section for the District remains. The playing fields, particularly the grass field, are well maintained except for a couple of holes in the fence, where dogs and people can sneak onto the grass. (The grass field is open by reservation only and has a nice surface for rugby, soccer and softball.) The lighted compact gravel fields are sometimes used for youth soccer practice, but can get pretty soggy after heavy rains. Lots of people bring their dogs up to the gravel fields to play and roam off leash. There are some nice trails that lead down to and along McKay Creek, which dogs and people enjoy. I also appreciate the parking and the garbage bins where I can dispose of dog poo. Every dog owner I have met has been very friendly as are the fans who watch the sports.

It's been a very long time coming for me to see this new piece of architecture come into the…read morelandscape of my AMS after my mutiple decade departure. Anticipation did not disappoint. It's a beautiful building. Spacious, well lit, multiple levels with a fast elevator, and charging stations everywhere for those laptops and pads. The new SUB is still connected to the old SUB via an underground corridor. The PIT is now moved into the new sub from it's old location. I wonder what it'll be like. The soft opening of the new Sub happened sometime early June 2015. I got to peek in here yesterday in the evening. There are still several vendor vacancies in here, but the usual food stalls are around. Blue Chip Cookies will be moving in. I notice that there will be a grocery store settling in soon. There are individual study and conference rooms, as well as new club offices. CITR has already relocated in the basement. In addition there is an performance space and an art exhibition space. Talk about a lot! Looks like I'll be spending more of my leisurely time here whenever I feel nostalgic.

Be prepared to fight to death for an outlet for your laptop (kidding on the fight to the death part, however, you get the idea). Most of the time it is really clean, however, teenagers are slobs and still haven't learned that the world isn't going to pick up after them, therefore, expect most seats to have garbage on them. There has been many times in which I felt like a mother cleaning up after these slobs. Oh to be a self absorbed teenager again. There are some food stalls, however, the better ones are closer to the cafeteria (I've reviewed those). They'v recently expanded.

This school's been around for a long time (1925), so I'm surprised there aren't any reviews for this facility or venue! Overall, I was quite impressed with the features here, to accommodate a play production, especially since this is an older school (I've visited a few newer Vancouver schools, like Carson Graham Secondary in North Van, and their theater room is much larger and modern, with many more contemporary features for lighting and sound and a HUGE stage, but more commonly, I've seen MUCH less accommodating theater rooms in older Vancouver schools, where the stages are small and the sets and lighting features are incredibly antiquated - or nonexistent). The facility here at Lord Byng is older, yes, but everything worked and the auditorium was quite ample (not sure what the max occupancy is here but it was more than enough for the purposes of most school's drama departments and show-goers). I liked how there was a separate entrance for the theater "wing" off Crown Street, and there is a small lobby with a concession stand to buy snacks (nice!). The seats in the theater auditorium were comfortable, and the stage was fairly large and deep. Lighting and sound/acoustics were great. The only quibble I had with the actual theater concerned the banking or gradation of the rows of seats; they didn't seem engineered properly to maximize individuals' views of the stage. I think the seat rows should have been on more of a grade, as many of us in our party had semi-obstructed views due to the people seated in front of us (and they weren't that tall, either!). I had to crane my neck at times to see what was going on on stage. Other than that, this venue was great for a drama troupe to put on a production! Bonus: tons of free parking in the area. Can't beat that.

I'm writing about the Chinese language school, kindergarten in Cantonese. My daughter has started it. It's basically immersion in Cantonese. I suspect the language school is the bread and butter of this organization. They start with the basic characters at this level. They offer two levels of kindergarten. One in which the characters are not as "difficult" and one in which it is much simpler. I went for the simple, just to get my daughter going. I never asked about simplified characters, and it appears that they teach traditional. I didn't see any simplified characters in the building. As far as I can tell, the instructor is trying to make it a fun environment to encourage interest. That's a good thing. Getting your kids enthusiastic about this stuff is extremely difficult. $180 per term. (Sept - Dec)

I was forced to attend this school as a child and it was one of the most dreaded parts of my…read morechildhood for many reasons. The school uses an "immersion" strategy to teach the language, meaning most of the teachers spoke only Chinese and zero English, and that the only way you could understand the teacher was if you already knew Chinese. There was no way for an absolute beginner to learn jack because all they ever hear from the teacher is white noise. A large portion of the teachers are nagging, miserable shrews who must not have been paid enough to take their job seriously, but still lack the compassion or empathy that even most poor people have; any good teachers that exist at the school are few and far between. They do not even try to respect the dignity of children, and seemingly have no problem using shaming and humiliation as discipline. My teacher would punish the students by making them sing a song in front of the class as a punishment for forgetting their bookbags, and she would also force students to stand up in front of the class and read a text, obviously getting mad if they didn't do it with enough enthusiasm. In contrast to most schools in the Western world, the school's outdated teaching system relies heavily on memorization and lectures with nothing even approaching active learning, which, for many people including myself, entirely removes the enjoyment from learning and destroys any remaining motivation of even the most strong-willed students. Whereas most schools let their teachers decide their assessment strategies, this school standardizes frequent written dictations and oral recitals, meaning that all students have to excruciatingly memorize and regurgitate the abstract, incomprehensible scribbles that are thrown at them often without knowing what they mean, only to forget them within hours because they're given new ones to memorize. People learning the simplified script may have an easier time with this than those learning traditional, but it would be better if the school used more engaging methods to teach the characters rather than just throwing characters at us and expecting us to somehow pick it up without explaining a thing in English. Maintenance of the school is virtually non-existent; the building is extremely rundown, obscene graffiti is scribbled everywhere on the walls and furniture, and students are given damaged fold-up tables in the place of desks (you can see them in an image on the Yelp page). I normally would refrain from making comments concerning the condition of buildings, because I've been taught not to judge things based on their appearance. However, after going to this school, it became evident to me that the building's neglect is a very accurate reflection of how this school treats its students. I would normally consider $250 per year a very low price for education, but in this case it's highway robbery because this school should be paying us to suffer through their services. If you want to enroll your child in a Chinese language school, I'm afraid you've got to look elsewhere unless you only care about the graduation diploma on cheap printer paper. And if you just need babysitting for your child for cheap, there are better, more humane services everywhere that do the job twice as good at half the price.
