For the Burlington area, this is probably the most "modern" of the furniture companies (thus the name). Jason, the manager, has been helpful across the board. I didn't find a couch there that met my needs (I need a small, shallow couch to fit a small space and I want it to be modern/retro looking) but he definitely did research for me and even suggested a few slightly less conventional options. He also helped me find a modern dining table that expands into a bigger size when needed. From our conversations I've learned that he has carried many different lines in the past and sticks with the ones that help him provide good customer service. Laurie helped me pick out fabrics for a headboard. I liked her taste, even when certain things she picked didn't go with my space, I wish they had. Things take a while to get in, but this is Vermont. If you order something that's not in stock, you've got to expect delays. Only reason I'm not giving them four stars is that I've had to special order things because they don't carry them in house, but this really isn't their fault. They've been patient and helpful with my "exotic" needs (not looking for typical Vermont furniture). Definitely do check them out if you're looking for new furniture and be sure to ask to see the catalogs of things they can order that aren't in the store.

This time we knew to shop in person and went to Modern Design. Our salesperson was excellent- knowledgeable and really spent a lot of time with us trying out many couches. We ended up ordering one that had to be shipped. They were spot on with delivery dates and the men that delivered the couch to us were professional , courteous and hard working. The items are unique, interesting, and high quality. There are kitchen gadgets, bar cart fixings, home decor items, greeting cards, jewelry...the list goes on. It's a great store and fits well with the Church Street aesthetic.

Still, we wanted to support a local business, so we returned to Burlington Furniture, and they agreed to match the competitor's price. We were given an estimated delivery date of 4/30. When we followed up, we were surprised to hear that our furniture wouldn't arrive for nearly two more months. We understand that delays happen, but we were frustrated by the lack of communication. I called the manager to get clarity and was told that the employee who gave us that update was no longer with the company. She promised to follow up--which she did--but she didn't provide a new delivery timeline. Instead, she told us the order wasn't actually delayed and that deliveries typically arrive two weeks after the estimated date. It's unclear why the original estimate wouldn't account for that window, and what's worse, I never heard back from the manager again. Ultimately, the delivery company brought our furniture just five days after the estimated date, which we appreciated--but the poor communication and lack of accountability from Burlington Furniture left a bad impression. We're happy with the product, but extremely disappointed in the service. Sadly, this experience has cost Burlington Furniture a customer.

I am very disappointed that this could not be resolved amicably and that the store owner has decided to go back on his promise of a refund. To date, I have made 4 phone calls to the Ethan Allen corporate office in an attempt to resolve this. I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Vermont Attorney General's office. I have also disputed the charge with my credit card company. What upsets me most of all is that I felt good shopping at Ethan Allen as it is a Vermont company and I wanted to shop local. Be aware that if you shop at this Ethan Allen location, you are taking a big risk. If everything runs smoothly, then you'll most likely be happy. My aunt spoke with Donnie and after I sent pictures of the damage, he agreed to come to her home to do the repair. My aunt said that she could not say enough about Donnie's kindness and professionalism. He had a solid and lasting repair done very quickly on the very old wood of her bed and he did a quick adjustment on her glider rocker as well! What else can I say? The disruption to my aunt's household was minimal, the work was done quickly, professionally and very well. Five stars is not nearly enough for N.E.K. Of The Woods.
